“我以前从未在The Sawyer(酒店)过夜。

3 takeaways as Spurs lose big in Fox’s return to Sacramento

SACRAMENTO — For at least one night, the Sacramento Kings won the trade.

Zach LaVine scored 36 points and DeMar DeRozan had 22 as the Kings ruined De’Aaron Fox’s return to Sacramento with a 127-109 win over the Spurs on Friday night.

Fox finished with just 16 points on an inefficient 6-of-17 from the field, including 0-for-6 from 3-point range, in his first game in Sacramento since the Kings traded him to the Spurs on Feb. 3.

Sacramento gained LaVine from Chicago as part of the three-team trade that brought Fox to the Spurs. He made 14 of 22, including 7 of 11 from beyond the arc en route to his sixth consecutive game with 20 or more points.

“A lot of the things were weird,” Fox said about playing in Sacramento as a visitor after 7 ½ seasons with the Kings, who drafted him fifth overall in 2017. "I’ve never spent the night at The Sawyer (hotel) before. I’ve never been in this visiting locker room. I didn’t know what the showers looked like. I didn’t know anything about what the visiting side looked like.

“But yeah, it was definitely fun. I’m glad the first one’s over with because now I feel like it probably won’t be as anticipated anymore. But next time I’m hoping for a better game from us.”

Fox, who also had a team-high eight assists, said the way LaVine played wasn’t a surprise.

“Everybody in the league knows what Zach can do,” he said.

The Kings, who improved to 33-29 despite playing without injured stars Domantas Sabonis and Malik Monk, led by as many as 27 points in the third quarter and entered the fourth up by 18.

Powered by LaVine’s 16 points, Sacramento outscored the Spurs 36-16 in the second quarter to lead by 14 at the break after trailing by eight in the first quarter.

The Spurs (26-35) pulled within 14 points with about four minutes left in the game on a 3-point shot by Chris Paul, but LaVine answered with a 3 of his own to help thwart the comeback bid.

Stephon Castle led the Spurs with 25 points off the bench before fouling out with 2:33 left.

Fox said his injured left pinkie finger will be examined by a doctor in Los Angeles when the Spurs are there March 17 to play the game that was postponed by the L.A. area wildfires in January.

“The surgery may may not happen that day,” he said.

Here are three takeaways from the first game of a two-game road trip that ends Sunday at Minnesota:

1, “Bitter people” did indeed boo, but Fox also received a lot of love.

Fox said he expected “bitter people” to let him have it, and he wasn’t wrong.

Fans booed each time he had possession of the ball in the early going, but he also received a standing ovation when the Kings played a tribute video during a timeout with 5:32 left in the first quarter.

Fox stood and acknowledged the fans with a few waves while “Thank you” flashed on the Jumbotron.

“I wouldn’t say I really got emotional, but it was great,” Fox said of the video and the ovation. “I was here for so long, almost a decade, so I really do appreciate it.”

Still, the boos continued to rain down every time he touched the ball, and he finished the first half with just six points on 3-of-10 shooting after Fox ending the first quarter with two points on 1-of-5.

“I thought he handled it with class,” Johnson said of Fox’s emotional night. “I thought he handled it like a professional, what we expected him to do, and I thought he got into the flow as the game went on. He missed a lot of shots he usually makes, but he got to that normal kind of bounce and pep in his step (eventually). We saw him creating advantages everywhere on the floor and …just nice to see him out there playing and trusted his instincts.”

2, Wembanyama’s presence a good sign

That doctors clearing Victor Wembanyama to travel with the team to Sacramento can be taken as a good sign as the club continues to say his long-term health and basketball activities won’t be affected and that he should be ready to play next season.

Although he’s on blood thinning medication, the 21-year-old Frenchman got the OK from the medical staff to make the long flight to California’s state capital.

Wembanyama has been on the bench for two home games since his season ended, but Friday marked the first road contest he has attended.

“There was no health risk or reasons for him to not come,” Johnson said. “He wants to be with his teammates as much as possible, so I think we’ll see him as much as they’ll allow him to (travel). I think it’s as simple as that. He wants to be with his team. Being away from them has taken a toll on him. He’s had a lot of time on his hands I don’t think that he’s ever had before, so it’s good to have him around.”

Johnson said he did not know if Wembanyama would also travel to Minneapolis.

If he doesn’t, he will be missed. Whenever he’s been on the bench since his season ended, Wembanyama has energetically supported his teammates whether by cheering them on, pointing out to them things he sees on the court or giving them pep talks both individually and collectively.

“I just think being in the locker room, being on the bench and being with his teammates means a lot to him and everybody else,” Johnson said.

3, Valanciunas’ double-double no surprise

Jonas Valanciunas, starting in the absence of Sabonis, had yet another good game against the Spurs, finishing with 15 points on 7-of-8 from the floor, 12 rebounds, six assists, two steals and a block.

The 6-foot-11, 265-pound Lithuanian center has played for five teams during his 14-season NBA career. No matter the stop, he always seems to play well against the Spurs.

Friday night was no exception.

After coming in with career averages of 16.4 points and 10.5 rebounds against San Antonio (his career norms are 11.2 and 8.0), he thrived once again, posting 10 points on 5-of-5, eight rebounds and three assists to help the Kings to a 14-point halftime lead.

By midway through the third period, he had a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double in just 20 minutes of work. For good measure, he also dished out five assists by that point.

Valanciunas’ work on the boards was a big reason why the Kings outrebounded the Spurs 51-36 and 30 second-chance points, the most by a Spurs foe this season.
