Fox could face season-ending surgery as soon as mid-March

San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox warms up before an NBA basketball game against the Sacramento Kings, Friday, March 7, 2025, in Sacramento, Calif.

MINNEAPOLIS – Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox could face season-ending finger surgery as soon as mid-March.

Fox said after Friday’s 127-109 loss in his first game in Sacramento since the Kings traded him to San Antonio on Feb. 3 that his injured left pinkie would be examined by a doctor in Los Angeles when the Spurs are back on the West Coast to face the Lakers on March 17.

“The surgery may or may not happen that day,” Fox said, referring to the date he sees the specialist.

Fox has been playing with the little and ring fingers on his shooting hand taped together ever since he dislocated the pinkie during training camp with Sacramento last fall.

Fox said shortly after he was traded to the Spurs that “more than likely” he would need surgery in the offseason to clean up possible ligament damage. But with the Spurs’ hopes of landing a spot in the Western Conference play-in tournament fading fast after the team announced Feb. 20 that All-Star center Victor Wembanyama would miss the remainder of the season due to a blood clot in his right shoulder, Fox is considering undergoing surgery sooner.

Fifteen games, including seven at home, would be left after the Spurs face the Lakers. The Spurs are set to face Toronto at the Frost Bank Center in the regular season finale April 13.

Fox’s bad pinkie could be a factor in his poor shooting since he joined the Spurs. He’s shooting just 43.0% from the field and 24.4% from 3-point range in 14 games with his new team after scoring 16 points on 6 of 17 and 0 of 6 in Friday’s game.

“I haven’t made a shot in two weeks, man,” Fox joked after the game.

No health risks involved in Wembanyama travel

Acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said there were “no health risks” involved in Wembanyama flying to Sacramento.

Although he’s on blood thinning medication, the 21-year-old Frenchman got the OK from the medical staff to make the long flight to California’s state capital. Wembanyama has been on the bench for two home games last week, but Friday marked the first road contest he has attended.

“He wants to be with his teammates as much as possible, so I think we’ll see him as much as they’ll allow him to (travel),” Johnson said. “I think it’s as simple as that. He wants to be with his team. Being away from them has taken a toll on him. He’s had a lot of time on his hands I don’t think that he’s ever had before, so it’s good to have him around.”

Johnson said he did not know if Wembanyama would also travel to Minneapolis, where the Spurs (26-35) will face the Timberwolves (36-29) Sunday in the final outing of a two-game trip.

If he doesn’t, he will be missed. Whenever he’s been on the bench since his season ended, Wembanyama has energetically supported his teammates whether by cheering them on, pointing out to them things he sees on the court or giving them pep talks both individually and collectively.

“I just think being in the locker room, being on the bench and being with his teammates means a lot to him and everybody else,” Johnson said.

The Spurs believe Wembanyama’s blood clot won’t affect his future health and basketball activities and expect him to be ready for the start of next season.

McDermott praying for Spurs

Kings forward Doug McDermott’s affection for the Spurs, coach Gregg Popovich and San Antonio runs deep.

“I learned a lot there and I grew up a lot there – not only as a basketball player but as a person – playing for one of the greatest coaches of all time, taking knowledge from him about how to be a better pro,” said McDermott, who played for the Spurs for two and a half season before they traded him to Indiana in a deadline deal in February 2024.

“I’ll always appreciate them for what they did for me,” the 11th-year pro said.

McDermott said he’s experienced “a lot of emotions” this season while watching from afar as the Spurs have dealt with losing Popovich to the mild stroke he suffered in early November and Wembanyama to the blood clot.

“They’ve definitely been in my prayers this year,” McDermott said. " It’s tough seeing Pop like that, and I hope he can make a healthy return at some point. And obviously Wemby is just a special talent but even a better human being, so you never want to see anyone go through something like that. But I think this is only going to be something so minor for him that we’re not going to be talking about it in 10 years."

The Spurs have said both Popovich, 76, and Wembanyama, 21, are expected to make full recoveries.

Popovich said last week he won’t return to coach the Spurs this season so he could "continue to focus on my health with the hope that I can return to coaching in the future.”
