MINNEAPOLIS — In his 2 ½ seasons playing with Keegan Murray in Sacramento, De’Aaron Fox never heard the fourth overall pick of the 2022 NBA Draft talk trash.
That changed Friday night after Spurs rookie Stephon Castle picked up his fifth foul early in the fourth quarter.
“Get your rook, Fox,” Keegan said to his mentor.
“That’s the first time I’ve ever heard Keegan talk trash,” Fox said. “I’ve never heard him talk trash.”
It was that kind of night for the former All-Star guard, one filled with strange sites and sounds.
Zach LaVine scored 36 points and DeMar DeRozan had 22 as the Kings ruined Fox’s return to Sacramento with a 127-109 win over the Spurs before a sellout crowd of 18,332 at Golden 1 Center.
Fox finished with just 16 points on inefficient 6-of-17 shooting, including 0 for 6 from 3-point range, and a team-high eight assists in his first game in Sacramento since the Kings traded him to the Spurs on Feb. 3.
Sacramento gained LaVine from Chicago as part of the three-team trade that brought Fox to the Spurs. He made 14 of 22, including 7 of 11 from beyond the arc, en route to his sixth consecutive game with 20 or more points.
“A lot of the things were weird,” Fox said about playing in Sacramento as a visitor after 7 ½ seasons with the Kings, who drafted him fifth overall in 2017. "I’ve never spent the night at The Sawyer (hotel) before. I’ve never been in this visiting locker room. I didn’t know what the showers looked like. I didn’t know anything about what the visiting side looked like.
“But, yeah, it was definitely fun. I’m glad the first one’s over with because now I feel like it probably won’t be as anticipated anymore. But next time I’m hoping for a better game from us.”
LaVine, who played a team-high 39 minutes, said he had a little extra juice with the trade in the spotlight.
“Each game you have to put pressure on yourself, especially with how tight the West is,” LaVine said. “But anything that you can take to get a little extra each and every night (is good). And we knew how important it was with (Fox) coming back in the building, so I was going to be ready.”
The Kings, who improved to 33-29 despite playing without injured stars Domantas Sabonis and Malik Monk, led by as many as 27 points in the third and entered the fourth up by 18.

Powered by LaVine’s 16 points, Sacramento outscored the Spurs 36-16 in the second quarter to lead by 14 at the break after trailing by eight in the first quarter.
The Spurs, who fell to 26-35 and will end their two-game trip at Minnesota (36-29 after winning four in a row) Sunday night, pulled within 14 points with about four minutes left in the game on a 3-point shot by Chris Paul. But the comeback bid was thwarted when LaVine answered with a 3 of his own on his way to 10 points in the final frame.
Stephon Castle led the Spurs with 25 points off the bench before fouling out with 2:33 left.
Fox said he expected “bitter people” to let him have it, and he wasn’t wrong.
He heard boos each time he had possession of the ball in the early going, but he also received a standing ovation when the Kings played a tribute video during a timeout with 5:32 left in the first quarter.
Fox stood and acknowledged the fans with a few waves while “Thank You” flashed on the JumboTron.
“I wouldn’t say I really got emotional, but it was great,” Fox said of the video and the ovation. “I was here for so long, almost a decade, so I really do appreciate it.”
Still, the boos continued to rain down every time he touched the ball, and he finished the first half with just six points on 3-of-10 shooting after scoring just two in the first period on 1 of 5.
“I thought he handled it with class,” acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said of Fox’s emotional night. “I thought he handled it like a professional, what we expected him to do, and I thought he got into the flow as the game went on. He missed a lot of shots he usually makes, but he got to that normal kind of bounce and pep in his step (eventually). We saw him creating advantages everywhere on the floor.”
Castle also said he thought Fox handled things well.
“I couldn’t imagine how many emotions were running through his head playing in this game,” the rookie said. “I couldn’t tell you what was going through his mind, but just his demeanor, the way he was still connected with us, not really playing selfish in any way …I feel like he handled that pretty well.”
Despite the loss, things could be much different next season when Fox is expected to team again with Victor Wembanyama, who the Spurs ruled out for the rest of the season Feb. 20 due to a blood clot in his right shoulder.
“Fox is incredible, man,” interim Kings coach Doug Christie said. “He’s a special, special talent.”
When it was over, Fox went out to dinner with Murray, who finished with 19 points and nine rebounds.
“I love Keegan, and we still talk all the time,” Fox said.
But now some of their conversations will be of the trash-talk variety.
