SACRAMENTO – De’Aaron Fox gave some of the best years of what should be a long NBA career to Sacramento.
In his eight seasons with the Kings, he averaged 21.5 points, 6.1 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 1.4 steals. The stint included a breakout season in 2022-23 in which he was selected to his first All-Star Game and All-NBA Team and led the Kings to their first postseason berth since 2006. Sacramento lost in seven games to Golden State in the first round, but Fox was outstanding, averaging 27.4 points after scoring 38 in a Game 1 win to tie for the second highest playoff debut in NBA history.
Suffice it to say, fans had plenty to cheer about during his stay in the City of Trees.
But when he plays at Golden 1 Center on Friday night for the first time since the Kings traded him to the Spurs on Feb. 3 as part of a three-team deal, Fox will likely receive a mixed welcome.
Not that it matters, he said.
“For the people who still love me, obviously I really appreciate that,” Fox said. “But for the people who don’t, we’re never worried about bitter people.”
The Spurs jumped at the chance to acquire Fox after signaling that his preferred landing spot was San Antonio, a destination also favored by his representatives because it would team him with 21-year-old superstar center Victor Wembanyama. Fox expressed a desire to join the Spurs after the Kings told him he was being shopped, according to the Sacramento Bee.
“In De’Aaron’s case, he had spent eight years in Sac. It’s pretty good, but it was time for a change,” Rich Paul of Klutch Sports told Gil’s Arena, a podcast and YouTube show hosted by former three-time All-Star Gilbert Arenas, two weeks after the completion of a deal that also sent Zach LaVine from Chicago to Sacramento.
“I personally wanted to place him next to Wemby to grow,” Paul continued. “And he thought that made a lot of sense too. It’s his choice, but that’s where he wanted to be, and I was blessed enough and able enough to make that happen.”
For its part, Kings management parted with Fox on seemingly good terms after he declined to sign a contract extension before the season.
“De’Aaron, incredible player. At the same time, we’ve offered multiple extensions that’s been public in addition to public and private conversations that happened before that decision on the coaching change,” Sacramento general manager Monte McNair told the media three days after trading Fox.
“So for us, it became clear that there was no pathway there for a long-term agreement. And that’s also why we’re here today.”
Fox’s decision, of course, angered many Kings fans. And they likely will let him hear about it Friday night even as others cheer him for his contributions.
Asked during a recent post-game session with reporters about his time with the Kings, Fox took the high road.
“I loved it, man,” he said of Sacramento before talking about how much he liked the climate in Northern California’s Sacramento Valley and how the Kings were beloved as the only major professional sports team in the city.
“Everybody bled purple, so it was always great just going to the grocery store, going to a restaurant,” Fox said. “Everybody there was extremely kind and extremely grateful. And then when we started winning, then it was ‘Light the Beam’ everywhere. So, you really felt it around the city. It was definitely a great place for me to be for as long as I was. And I really appreciate my time there.”
But those positive comments will fall on deaf ears in some quarters of Sacramento.
The drama will make it a must-watch game for many in the NBA, including Brooklyn coach Jordi Fernández, who coached both Fox and Harrison Barnes, who the Spurs acquired in a three-team trade last summer with the Kings, as an assistant in Sacramento from 2022-2024.
“Really good fans base,” Fernández said of Sacramento, “That place is pretty electric when you play there. The fans love it and they’re very intense. It’s going to be a fun game to watch. I think I’m going to watch it.”
The Spurs, who beat the Nets 127-113 Tuesday to improve to 3-5 since they lost Wembanyama for the season due to a blood clot and 26-34 overall, will face a Kings team that had won four in a row before losing 116-110 at Denver on Wednesday night to fall to 32-29.
Sacramento is 8-6 since trading Fox and ranks ninth in the Western Conference standings, 5 ½ games ahead of 13th-place San Antonio. The Spurs are 5-8 with Fox, who is averaging 19.3 points, 6.6 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 1.8 steals for his new team.
Having played for seven franchises in his 20-season NBA career, Spurs point guard Chris Paul, 39, is quite familiar with the emotions Fox will experience in his return to Sacramento.
“I’ve been in that situation a few times, and this is going to be fun,” Paul said. “It’s going to be interesting to sort of take it all, watch it all take place, especially with me not being the center of attention this time.”
No matter what happens, Paul is confident Fox, 27, will handle things well.
“He’s a pro,” Paul said. “I just know when I was in those situations, all I wanted was my teammates to support me, and that’s what we’ll all do and try to go out there and make sure we get the win.”
And if the boos rain down on Fox?
“That’s not my problem,” he said. “As I said, for the people that still support me, I love it. And for the people who don’t and want to boo, we don’t care about bitter people.”
