Victor Wembanyama’s presence on the Spurs bench lifted his teammates’ spirits, but what they desperately needed as Sunday night’s game wore on was a physical boost.
Opening the second half on a 13-4 run after trailing 77-72 at halftime, the Oklahoma City pulled away for a 146-132 win, ruining the Spurs’ return home after a rodeo road trip filled with headline-grabbing news.
In their month away from the Frost Bank Center, the Spurs acquired De’Aaron Fox in a trade but lost Wembanyama for the season because of a blood clot in his right shoulder. Coach Gregg Popovich also confirmed he would not return this season after suffering a mild stroke Nov. 2.
“There’s been a few things that have happened,” acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said.
Wembanyama’s appearance wasn’t enough to prevent the Spurs from slowing down in the second half on the second night of a back to back after they claimed a 130-128 win at Memphis on Saturday thanks to a game-winning jumper by Fox with 2.6 seconds left.
“We got worn down by a very, very good team,” Johnson said after Jalen Williams pumped in a career-high 41 points and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had 31 to lead the Thunder (49-11) to their third win in a row.
“They’re relentless at attacking the paint,” Johnson said. “SGA and Jalen Williams, those guys had monster games in terms of imposing themselves on us and getting into that paint.”
The Spurs (25-34) wasted a big night from rookie Stephon Castle, who finished with 32 points off the bench for his second 30-point outing of the season. Fox had 20 points in his first game as a Spur at the Frost Bank Center.
“The scoring and stuff is cool, but we still want to win,” Castle said of coming within a point of matching his season high for points. “So, yeah, that doesn’t really mean that much to me, honestly.”
Fox said it was good to finally play at his new home after the Spurs acquired him from Sacramento in a three-team trade Feb. 5.
“Obviously, we wish we came out with a win, but like I said, offensively, we were really good throughout the game, but as a team we have to be better defensively,” he said after the Spurs gave up a season high for points.
The Spurs set franchise records for most 3-pointers in a quarter (10 in the first) and in a half (16). By the break, every player who got on the court had hit at least one 3 and Castle had a season-high four, but the Spurs sank only two shots from beyond the arc in the second half to finish the night 18-for-43 from deep (41.9%).
“I’ve seen it a lot and even just watching a lot of basketball period, those things happen,” Fox said of the Spurs going cold from deep in the second half. “Still, we scored 132 points. That’s enough to win every game in a season, but you can’t give up 150 and expect to win.”
Here are three takeaways from the first game of a two-game homestand that ends against Brooklyn on Tuesday:
1. Castle’s showed off more than just his ability to score
Johnson loved that Castle had a big scoring night on 12-for-21 from the field, but he was also pleased to see the fourth overall pick finish with eight rebounds.
“He was aggressive and tried to influence the game in a lot of respects,” Johnson said. “He’s been challenged to rebound, and he had eight of them tonight, including four offensively. He also had seven free throws and was just aggressive in a lot of aspects, which is what we want to see from him.”
The Spurs were also pleased to see Castle fire away from distance with 10 attempts.
“I put a lot of work into it,” he said of his 3-point shooting after coming into the game shooting 27.9 from distance.
Castle’s all-around outing - he also had three assists - underscored his All-Star caliber potential.
“He’s so talented, he’s so athletic,” Fox said. "And I tell people all the time, you get length, you get athleticism, you go figure it out. Even if you don’t know what you’re doing out there, when you’re that gifted, you go figure it out. And I think right now he’s doing that.
“He’s going to be a hell of a player in this league.”
2. Champagnie’s alleged elbow didn’t seem intentional
The Spurs’ Julian Champagnie and the Thunder’s Kenrich Williams and Lu Dort got ejected for fighting with three minutes left in the third quarter.
The dustup started when Champagnie appeared to inadvertently elbow Williams while trying to protect the ball from the pressuring forward. Williams rushed Champagnie, forcing coaches and players from both teams and security personnel to separate them.
Dort also got tossed after picking up a technical during the scrum.
“We haven’t been a team that retaliated very much, we retaliated tonight,” Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said. “I guess (referee) James Williams ejected Lu because of something he said.”
Johnson suggested that Williams overreacted to an inadvertent blow by Champagnie.
“I didn’t think it was anything intentional,” Johnson said. “Kenrich Williams was being aggressive and Julian was opening up. I don’t know if that’s an offensive foul now. I don’t know where that line is of what space you’re allowed.”
Champagnie and Williams weren’t available for comment after the game. Dort declined to comment.
3. Wembanyama’s presence no surprise
Given how much he loves basketball and his fondness for his teammates, the All-Star center’s presence on the bench wasn’t a surprise.
“I know he’ll be around as much as he can,” Johnson said. “He’s a hard guy to keep away.”
Castle said Wembanyama’s presence speaks to the “kind of person he is.”
“He is not doing that for cameras or views or anything,” the rookie said. “That’s just how he is. He was at our practice the other day, so that doesn’t really surprise me. He’s still super connected with the team. He is not isolating himself from the guys. I know he wants to be out there. He’s just making himself feel like he’s still part of the team.”
Johnson reiterated before the game the Spurs expect Wembanyama to be “ready” to return by the start of next season.
“We … have a good handle on it,” Johnson said. “No long-term effects on his health and basketball activities.”
