Acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson wasn’t surprised to see a familiar 7-foot-3 figure making his way through the locker room before Sunday night’s game against Oklahoma City.
“I know he’ll be around as much as he can,” Johnson said of Victor Wembanyama. “He’s a hard guy to keep away.”
The All-Star center watched the Spurs lose 146-132 to the Thunder from the bench with his teammates. It was his first appearance at a Spurs game since his season ended when the team announced Feb. 20 that he had a blood clot in his right shoulder.
Sunday’s game marked the Spurs’ first outing at the Frost Bank Center since a Feb. 1 loss to Miami. Wembanyama wasn’t about to watch it from the comfort of his couch at home.
Spurs rookie Stephon Castle, who had a team-high 32 points against the Thunder, said Wembanyama’s presence underscored the “kind of person he is.”
“He is not doing that for cameras or views or anything,” Castle said. “That’s just how he is. He was at our practice the other day, so that doesn’t really surprise me. He’s still super connected with the team. He is not isolating himself from the guys. I know he wants to be out there. He’s just making himself feel like he’s still part of the team.”
De’Aaron Fox, who scored 20 points in his debut as a Spur at the Frost Bank Center, said the team benefits from having Wembanyama with it even if he’s not playing.
“He’s a great person to be around,” Fox said.
Johnson reiterated before the game the Spurs expect Wembanyama to be “ready” to return by the start of next season.
“We … have a good handle on it,” Johnson said. “No long-term effects on his health and basketball activities.”
Said Fox, “We want him back out there, but we just want him healthy period.”

Champagnie ejected for fighting
Spurs reserve forward Julian Champagnie and the Thunder’s Kenrich Williams and Lu Dort got ejected for fighting with three minutes left in the third quarter.
The dust-up started when Champagnie appeared to inadvertently elbow Williams while trying to protect the ball while being pressured hard by the forward. After his head snapped back, Williams rushed Champagnie, forcing coaches and players from both teams and Spurs security personnel to separate them.
Dort also got tossed after picking up a technical during the scrum.

“We haven’t been a team that retaliated very much, we retaliated tonight,” Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said. “I guess (referee) James Williams ejected Lu because of something he said.”
Johnson suggested that Williams overreacted to an inadvertent blow by Champagnie.
“I didn’t think it was anything intentional,” Johnson said. “Kenrich Williams was being aggressive and Julian was opening up. I don’t know if that’s an offensive foul now. I don’t know where that line is of what space you’re allowed.”
Champagnie and Williams weren’t available for comment. Dort declined to comment.
Spurs sign Biyombo for rest of season
As expected, the Spurs on Monday signed center Bismack Biyombo for the remainder of the season after his second 10-day contract expired after Sunday’s game.
Per club policy, terms of the deal were not announced.
“He’s done a heck of a job,” Johnson said before Sunday’s game. “He’s been an absolute professional and when he’s been given an opportunity, he has made a positive impact on the team. He’s been great.”
Biyombo has played in eight games for the Spurs, averaging 16.5 minutes, 5.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 0.9 blocks. The 32-year-old native of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has started seven times and has notched two double-doubles.
