Week in Review: Spurs offense comes alive to steal a victory in otherwise rough week

San Antonio Spurs v Memphis Grizzlies

After a couple of low-scoring games, the Spurs found some offense to upset the Grizzlies and give the Thunder a run for their money.

Welcome to the Week in Review: a Monday feature that looks back at the week that was for the San Antonio Spurs, takes a look at the week ahead, and more. Enjoy!

Week 18: Hit by a double-whammy of bad health news — the loss of Victor Wembanyama for the season and the (unsurprising) announcement that Gregg Popovich would not return this season — results took a bit of a back seat in the news department for the Spurs. Still, they managed to get a win in Austin against the Suns before losing to Detroit (in Austin) and in the first matchup of a miniseries in New Orleans.

Week 19: 1-3 (25-34, 13th in West)

103-109 loss at New Orleans Pelicans

Recap: In a nearly identical repeat to their first game in New Orleans two nights prior, the Spurs again got out to a strong start, leading by 19 early in the second quarter, but per usual, their issues with protecting comfortable leads continued. While they managed to hold on until the fourth quarter, they were outscored 10-3 over the final 4 minutes for their 33rd blown-double-digit-lead loss of the last two seasons.

What we learned

106-118 loss at Houston Rockets

Recap: In a game whose final score doesn’t quite match how badly the Spurs were dominated by a superior opponent, the Spurs got out to a disastrous start in Houston, quickly getting down by double digits and never recovering. Overall, they were down by as much as 28 before making things appear respectable in garbage time. If there was a silver lining, Stephon Castle finally broke out of his funk, and it translated to the next two games.

What we learned

130-128 win at Memphis Grizzlies

Recap: With a trip home between games, the Spurs met with Gregg Popovich for the first time since his stroke on November 2, and they seemed to take his criticisms to heart. The Spurs once again had a strong first half to lead the Grizzlies by as much as 22, and that would prove to be just enough. While Memphis came all the way back to tie things up a couple of times behind a huge game from Jaren Jackson Jr, De’Aaron Fox hit the game winner to help the Spurs steal a victory to conclude the Rodeo Road Trip.

What we learned

132-146 loss vs. Oklahoma City Thunder

Recap: Finally home again for the first time in a month, the motivated Spurs were red hot in the first half, hitting 10 threes in the first quarter and 16 overall — both franchise records. Unfortunately, the Thunder are too good and kept things close before taking advantage of the Spurs’ inevitable reverse to the mean in the second half (where they only hit two threes, both in garbage time) to run away with the win.

Power Rankings

John Schuhmann, NBA.com— 20 (last week: 20)

OffRtg: 112.3 (17) DefRtg: 114.7 (22) NetRtg: -2.4 (20) Pace: 100.3 (10)

The Spurs are 2-5 since losing Victor Wembanyama at the All-Star break, sliding into the bottom 10 on defense and into 13th place in the Western Conference.

Two takeaways

  1. Offense was a problem (101.5 points scored per 100 possessions) as the Spurs lost four straight games (including two to the Pelicans), with players not named Keldon Johnson registering an effective field goal percentage of just 43.7%. Even with the offense coming alive over the weekend, Stephon Castle (45.7%), De’Aaron Fox (43%) and Devin Vassell (42.2%) rank 48th, 52nd and 53rd in effective field goal percentage among 58 players with at least 75 post-break field goal attempts.

  2. Castle totaled 56 points as the Spurs scored 127.8 points per 100 possessions against two top-10 defenses over the weekend, with Fox hitting the game-winner in Memphis on Saturday. Most encouraging may be that Castle’s 32 points against the Thunder came with a career-high four 3-pointers, with the rookie having shot just 4-for-22 over his first six games out of the break.

The Spurs have a busy final six weeks of the season, with Wednesday and Thursday being their final two-day break. Opportunities to play spoiler will come after that, with 14 of their next 20 games against teams currently sporting winning records.

Brett Siegel, Clutch Points— 24 (last week: 21)

Without Victor Wembanyama, the San Antonio Spurs have no shot at making the play-in tournament in the West. This is unfortunate considering the Spurs were flirting with the upper half of the NBA power rankings before the trade deadline and All-Star break. Now, with Wemby out and Gregg Popovich taking the rest of the season off to recover from his stroke, the Spurs will continue to integrate De’Aaron Fox into their system.

Coming up: Tues. 3/4 vs. Brooklyn Nets; Fri. 3/7 at Sacramento Kings; Sun. 3/9 at Minnesota Timberwolves

Prediction 1-2 — It’s not a daunting schedule on its own, but nothing is easy for the Spurs without Wemby. The Nets are in a slump, and that will be their best bet for a win in front of their home crowd this week. After that are two road games against teams currently in the play-in race but who present quite a matchup problem down low for the Spurs. But who knows? Maybe Fox will do what recently-traded players do and be out of blood against the team that traded him (even if it’s what he wanted).
