NEW ORLEANS — Life without Victor Wembanyma is getting tougher by the day for the Spurs.

Devin Vassell had 20 points and De’Aaron Fox had 15 points, nine assists and matched his career high with six steals, but it wasn’t nearly enough as the Spurs blew a 19-point first half lead in losing 109-103 to New Orleans on Tuesday night.

The Spurs are 1-3 since learning last Wednesday their All-Star center’s season was over due to a blood clot in his right shoulder, a nosedive that has dampened their hopes of getting back into the play-in race.

The Pelicans completed a two-game home sweep of the Spurs two days after overcoming a 17-point lead in the first contest in claiming a 114-96 win.

In Tuesday’s rematch, the Spurs, who fell to 24-32 with their third loss in a row, committed 20 turnovers, leading to 26 points for the Pelicans, who improved to 15-43.

“Our margin for error is just zero right now,” acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “So, whether that’s making free throws, converting plays when you turn them over and you have an advantage, executing a play, executing a defensive coverage, we just have no margin for error right now. … The 48 minute game is long for us right now. We have to continue to challenge ourselves to lessen some of those mistakes.”

Trey Murphy III scored 24 points and Zion Williamson added 18 for the Pelicans, who trailed 51-49 at the half after being down 35-16 early in the second period.

Harrison Barnes had 15 points for the Spurs. Bismack Biyombo had his second consecutive double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Here are three takeaways from the third of four meetings between the teams this season (Spurs trail 1-2):

1. Fox failed to deliver in crunch time

Fox is known as one of the best clutch players in the league, but he had a tough time down the stretch in this one.

The recently acquired explosive point guard committed three of the Spurs’ four turnovers in the final 3:37 after New Orleans grabbed a 101-100 lead on C.J. McCollum’s driving layup with 4:11 left. He also misfired on a 3-point attempt in that span.

It was that kind of night for the eighth-year pro, who hit just 6 of 21 shots from the field, 1 of 9 from 3-point range and committed a team-high six turnovers.

“I just got to play better,” Fox said. “It’s a very make or miss league, but when it comes to turnovers and things like that, the controllables, you have to be able to control them and do them better.”

Asked if Fox might have been pressing too much to make up for Wembanyama’s absence, Johnson said, “I think everybody’s probably pressing a little bit.”

2. Castle’s struggles continue

Stephon Castle, who came out of the All-Star break as the leading candidate for rookie of the year, logged just 12 minutes off the bench and scored only four points after registering only two in Sunday’s game.

Johnson said Castle played only nine minutes through three quarters because his rotation was “probably a little unique” after the starting five “got it rolling” in the first nine minutes of the game.

“We didn’t want to stop our momentum in that sense,” Johnson said. “And then, yeah, there were just a few mistakes that were made (by Castle) in a game that close and going back and forth. We needed as much solid basketball as we could get. It was just a decision I made in few different situations.”

Castle got off to a shaky start that included committing two turnovers in the first quarter and three fouls by halftime.

Vassell said Castle’s struggles aren’t anything to get overly concerned about.

“My rookie year was up and down too … That’s just the nature of the league,” Vassell said. “But you can’t let that dictate your effort or you can’t show it, either. So, I’m going to talk to him just about some little stuff. But his potential is out of this world, and I know it’s only going to take him one game for it to bounce back and he’ll be fine.”

3. Milestones reached Tuesday underscore Paul’s brilliant career

Spurs point guard Chris Paul reached a few milestones that highlight his status as a future first-ballot Hall of Famer.

The 39-year-old pro finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds for his 12th double-double of the season on a night he became the only player in NBA history with 19 seasons of 500-plus points and 400-plus assists and just the third player in league history with 500-plus points in 20 seasons.

LeBron James and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar are the others.
