NEW ORLEANS – Chris Paul sounded a lot like Terry Stembridge after the Spurs blew a 17-point third quarter lead Sunday night on their way to a 114-96 loss to the lowly Pelicans.

Stembridge, the Spurs’ first radio voice, always signed off his broadcasts by saying, “There will be another night.”

In so many words, Paul said the same before he left Smoothie King Center on a night the Spurs hit just 33% of their shots from the field (32 of 97), got outrebounded 69-46 and were outscored 39-17 in the fourth quarter.

“The good thing about this league for the most part is until you get to the last game of the (regular) season or the playoffs, there is always another game,” the 20th-year point guard said. “This is like a playoff series where we play 'em again Tuesday, so we got to flush this one and get ready for that one.”

The Spurs (24-31) led by 10 with 2:12 left in the third quarter, but the Pelicans (14-43) outscored them 51-22 during the final 14:12. New Orleans opened the fourth period on a 15-2 run as the Spurs missed shot after shot en route to finishing the quarter 4 of 21 from the field (19%).

“It just kind of snowballed in a catastrophic way there in the second half,” acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “We missed a ton of shots, the momentum swung and you felt the confidence dissipate a little bit.”

Zion Williamson led New Orleans with 22 points and nine rebounds. Kelly Olynyk also had a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds for the Pelicans, which received big nights from a pair of rookie centers – Yves Missi with a season-high 15 rebounds and Karlo Matkovic with a season-best 19 points.

Julian Champagnie and Keldon Johnson each scored 18 to lead the Spurs, who are 9-17 on the road. Champagnie matched his career high with six 3s, five of which came in the first half.

The Spurs fell to 1-2 since All-Star center Victor Wembanyama was lost for the season because of a blood clot in his right shoulder.

Here are three takeaways from the Spurs’ third game in four nights:

1. The Spurs’ tough shooting night was exactly that

The Spurs’ horrendous shooting night, which included going 15 of 51 (29.4%) from 3-point range, for the most part was on them. They got good looks, but simply couldn’t put the ball in the basket.

“Today was crazy,” said Devin Vassell, who scored just five points on 1 for 9 from the floor, including 1 for 6 from beyond the arc. “I had shots go in and out, pretty much all the way down and come back out. I had a dunk that goes in and comes back.”

He wasn’t alone. Paul also had good looks but missed 9 of 10 to end with four points.

Rookie Stephon Castle air balled a 3-point attempt, but like the veterans for the most part just couldn’t find the mark, finishing 1 for 10 with two points.

“The 23 differential (in rebounding), I think, goes to the 33% (shooting) from the field,” Mitch Johnson said. “We made 13 shots in the second half, but it felt like even in the first half we missed a lot of good shots, even stuff around the rim.”

2. Bassey can’t catch a break

The Spurs were counting on backup big man Charles Bassey to give them some rebounding relief after he returned Friday night against Detroit after missing six games due to an MCL sprain in his left knee.

But there he was back on the bench Sunday night after he was ruled out for the second half due to patellar tendon soreness in his left knee.

“Pretty frustrated for the kid,” Mitch Johnson said of Bassey, who missed most of last season after tearing the ACL in his left knee in December 2023. “He’s put in a lot of work. Again, no one feels sorry for you and you play with the hand you’re dealt. But he’s worked really hard. Hopefully, it will be a short-term thing and he’s back soon.”

Bassey finished the first half Sunday with four points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal in six minutes.

3. Spurs must do some soul searching

The Spurs have Monday off, but they don’t plan to spend the day getting their minds off basketball after losing 15 of their last 21 games, including two in a row.

“We can’t get away from it – honestly, truly,” Champagnie said. "I think our time to get away from it was during the (All-Star) break. Now it’s time to hunker down and figure it out. Whether that means the team going out to dinner, doing something together, or we get in the gym more and figure something out, or talk about it more.

“I don’t know what it’s going to be, but we got to figure something out.”
