Popovich says he won’t return to coach Spurs this season

Gregg Popovich announced Thursday he has decided not to return this season to coach the Spurs.

“Mitch Johnson and his staff have done a wonderful job and the resolve and professionalism the players have shown, sticking together during a challenging season, has been outstanding,” Popovich said in a statement released by the Spurs.

“I will continue to focus on my health with the hope that I can return to coaching in the future,” added Popovich, 76.

The NBA’s all-time winningest coach has been away from the team going through rehab after suffering a mild stroke Nov. 2. In his absence, Johnson has served as acting coach after entering his sixth season as an assistant.

Popovich’s announcement is not a surprise considering there are only 25 games left in the regular season. The Spurs’ finale is set for April 13.

Johnson, 38, has guided the Spurs to a 22-30 record after taking over with the team sporting a 2-3 mark.

The Spurs are set to face the Grizzlies in Memphis on Saturday night after losing 17 of their last 23 games, including four in a row, a skid that has dampened their hopes of getting back into the race for a berth in the Western Conference play-in tournament.

The Spurs are 1-4 since they learned last Wednesday that second-year All-Star center Victor Wembanyama was suffering from a season-ending blood clot in his right shoulder.

Popovich’s announcement leaves the door open to his return to the bench next season. The Spurs have said they expect Popovich to make a full recovery but have not released any details about his rehabilitation or a timeline for his return to the bench.

“He’s doing his rehab and improving,” Spurs CEO R.C. Buford said in January while the Spurs were in Paris for two games against Indiana.

Johnson has said several times this season Popovich has given him advice via either phone conversations or through text messages.

“He is watching games, still opinionated as he’s ever been, and competitive and what you would think,” Johnson said Jan. 19. “So giving praise and cussing me out all at the same time.”

Spurs point guard Chris Paul also said he receives frequent feedback from Popovich.

“I talk to him,” Paul said in Paris. “He tells me what he sees. I appreciate that more than anything. Because he doesn’t have to do that, and he does.”

Popovich is the NBA’s winningest coach with 1,412 regular-season victories (per NBA rules, the wins under Johnson go to Popovich) and an additional 170 victories in the postseason.

The Spurs won five championships under Popovich, who was in the early stages of his 29th season as the team’s coach when he suffered the stroke. They also appeared in the 2013 NBA Finals but lost to the LeBron James-led Miami Heat in seven games.

Popovich is the longest-tenured active coach in the four major North American pro sports leagues. In 2020, he became the oldest coach ever on an opening night in NBA history. He was 72 at the time.

Popovich received a five-year, $80 million contract extension from the Spurs in July 2023, which increased his salary to $16 million per year, making him at the time the league’s highest-paid coach. He is also the team’s director of basketball operations.

The Air Force Academy graduate and former Air Force officer took over as coach of the Spurs in December 1996. His postseason wins put him third on the NBA’s all-time chart behind Phil Jackson (229) and Pat Riley (171).

Popovich entered the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in August 2023.
