AUSTIN — The sweat had not yet dried on the Spurs’ 120-109 victory over Phoenix on Thursday when Keldon Johnson’s phone buzzed.

It was fallen star Victor Wembanyama, chiming into the team’s group chat with a two-word message: “Great win.”

Hours after learning they would be without their All-Star center for the remainder of the season due to a blood clot in his right shoulder, the Spurs went out and won one for Wemby.

“Obviously it’s tough hearing it,” Johnson said of Wembanyama’s condition. “Vic means so much to us and to see him go through that, it kind of takes a toll on everybody. We know that, regardless, we have his back.”

Playing on emotion, the Spurs returned to Austin’s Moody Center and dealt a talented but underachieving Phoenix team a devastating blow.

De’Aaron Fox poured in 26 points — including 11 in the fourth quarter — while Johnson and Julian Champagnie chipped in 15 points apiece to push the Spurs to victory in a game they never trailed.

“I thought they responded how we expected them to,” Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson said. “We had a lot of professional guys that were up to the challenge.”

Phoenix got 27 points from Royce O’Neale and 22 from Kevin Durant, who was playing his first regular-season NBA game in Austin since leaving the University of Texas after his freshman season in 2006-07.

The loss sent the Suns to 26-29. The Spurs, who return to the Moody Center to face Detroit on Friday, improved to 24-29.

Here are three takeaways from Thursday’s victory, which ensured the Spurs would win at least one game before an Austin crowd for the third consecutive season:

1. It was a homecoming befitting a Longhorn legend

Less than two minutes into Thursday’s game, a Phoenix Suns player rose up for a mid-range jumper.

Since that player was Durant, the otherwise partisan Spurs crowd went appropriately crazy.

Loss aside, the former Texas Longhorn enjoyed a happy homecoming to his old college stomping grounds.

“(Losing) is frustrating, but I still had a great time,” Durant said. “That’s not going sour the mood of me coming back here and playing in front of this incredible crowd.”

The Spurs, meanwhile, understood the dual loyalty of the Moody Center fans.

“KD went to Texas, and he’s one of their legends,” Mitch Johnson said. “So can’t be mad.”

Durant counted the night as a personal success, even as the Suns suffered a defeat deflating to their flagging playoff hopes.

The event drew a sellout crowd of 16,246, setting a record for a sporting event in the arena for the third season in a row.

“It was loud and energetic the whole night,” Durant said. “I’m just very grateful for all the love I’ve received from this region of the world in the last 20 years.”

2. Spurs’ committee comes through

As news of Wembanyama’s prolonged absence settled in at shootaround Thursday morning, Paul said there was only one way the Spurs could hope to replace their 7-foot-3 centerpiece.

“It’s by committee,” Paul said.

That committee came through in a big way against the Suns.

Seven of the nine players who saw the floor for the Spurs reached double figures. The other two scored eight points.

Paul doled out 10 assists. Stephon Castle grabbed 10 rebounds.

Give a special hat tip to Bismack Biyombo, who with Wembanyama out drew his first start in more than a year and delivered eight points, three rebounds and (unofficially) about 400 screens.

He was at least part of the reason the Spurs were able to win the battle of the boards, and points in the paint, and second-chance points.

“He’s a pro’s pro,” said Paul, who previously played with Biyombo in Phoenix. “Always been that way. Never changed.”

Biyombo’s 10-day contract expired after Thursday’s game.

Even with Charles Bassey expected to return from his knee sprain in time to play in the Spurs’ return to Moody Center on Friday against Detroit, it would not be surprising to see Biyombo handed another 10-day deal.

Other Spurs certainly would welcome more time with the 32-year-old big man.

“Biz gave us a good presence,” Julian Champagnie said. “He’s another vet in the locker room. I don’t know if you guys were watching, but he’s up almost every other play, telling guys, ‘Do this, do that here.’ He’s able to talk you through things.”

3. Paul moves up the theft ladder

With 5:24 left in the first quarter, Paul reached to intercept an errant pass from Devin Booker — and also reached a milestone.

The steal pushed him past Jason Kidd for second place on the NBA’s all-time steals chart.

Paul grabbed another steal later in the game, bringing his career total to 2,686 and counting.

The Spurs point guard spent part of All-Star weekend hanging out with Kidd in San Francisco. Kidd, now the Dallas Mavericks’ coach, knew what was coming.

“He knew I was one away,” Paul said.

Earlier this season, the 39-year-old Paul also passed Kidd for second on the league’s all-time assist ledger. He trails first-place John Stockton on both charts.

“Chris has had so many accomplishments and milestones and we’ve been a part of a few this year,” Mitch Johnson said. “We’ve been lucky to live those through with him. He’s just been a tremendous example for our young guys and he’s been a tremendous player.”

Fox, who like Paul hopes to make a long living as a small guard, said the Spurs’ eldest statesmen is a worthy example.

“Obviously playing 20 years at his size and what he’s done throughout his career, man, it’s truly amazing,” Fox said. “I feel like that gives a lot of people hope. Everybody’s not going to be 6-3 and super athletic or 6-8 or 6-10 or 7 foot. So he gives a lot of kids hope.”
