‘Pro’s pro’ Biyombo started, delivered against Suns
San Antonio Spurs center Bismack Biyombo (18) reaches for a rebound over Phoenix Suns center Mason Plumlee (22) at Moody Center on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2025, in Austin, Texas. The Spurs defeated the Suns 120-109
AUSTIN – Chris Paul didn’t hesitate to give Bismack Biyombo a ringing endorsement after the Spurs told him they were considering signing the journeyman big man to a 10-day contract after backup center Charles Bassey suffered a knee injury in early February.
"When coach (Mitch Johnson) said we have three different names (to choose from), I said, ‘Well, I am biased. I know Biz. I know who he is. I know how he approaches the game.’
"He’s a pro’s pro. Always been that way. Never changed.”
Biyomobo, 32, got the deal, and now he’s got another one after his performance in the Spurs’ 120-109 win over Phoenix on Thursday night at Moody Center.
The Spurs announced Friday they have signed the 14th-year pro to another 10-day deal after giving him his first such contract Feb. 9.
Playing significant minutes for the first time this season, with his contract set to expire after the game, the 6-foot-8 native of the Republic of Congo started at center in place of Victor Wembanyama after the All-Star was ruled out for the rest of the season Thursday due to a blood clot in his right shoulder.
In 16 minutes, Biyombo finished with eight points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal.
“He was a complete professional,” acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “He was an adult. He set a tone to start the game and he was excellent.”
Paul and Biyombo played together in Phoenix for two seasons from 2021-2023.
“Biz is a guy I got the utmost respect for because I know how he prepares day in and day out,” Paul said. “I know who he is in the locker room, and I was just excited everybody got a chance to see it.”
Paul wasn’t the only Spur praising Biyombo.
“Biz gave us a good presence,” Julian Champagnie said. “He’s another vet in the locker room. He’s up almost every other play (while on the bench), telling guys, 'Do this, do that here.’ He’s able to talk you through things.”
San Antonio Spurs center Bismack Biyombo (18) and Phoenix Suns center Mason Plumlee (22) reach for a rebound during the second half of an NBA basketball game in Austin, Texas, Thursday, Feb. 20, 2025.
Biyombo’s play helped the Spurs out-rebound the Suns 44-39 and fulfill their goal of playing well defensively.
“Our physicality and resistance was at an appropriate level,” Johnson said. “Our communication was better, had a few mishaps, a couple of stretches where it could have been better. But that is a powerful offensive team, so it’s a lot to ask to shut them off for 48 minutes. Thought we did a really good job, especially when it mattered the most.”
As for Bassey, Johnson suggested the former St. Anthony Yellow Jacket could return as soon as Friday night when the Spurs conclude their annual Austin trip against Detroit.
Bassey hasn’t played since Feb. 3 when he suffered a left MCL sprain in Memphis.
“There’s a good amount of optimism he’ll be ready to go tomorrow,” Johnson said before Thursday’s game. “He’ll have to test it out and get it fully cleared and feel good about it, but it’s trending that way.”
Despite loss, Durant enjoyed Austin return
Less than two minutes into Thursday’s game, a Suns player rose up for a mid-range jumper.
Since that player was Kevin Durant, the otherwise partisan Spurs crowd went appropriately crazy.
Loss aside, the former Texas Longhorn enjoyed a happy homecoming to his old college stomping grounds.
“(Losing) is frustrating, but I still had a great time,” Durant said. “That’s not going sour the mood of me coming back here and playing in front of this incredible crowd.”
The Spurs, meanwhile, understood the dual loyalty of the Moody Center fans.
“KD went to Texas, and he’s one of their legends,” Johnson said. “So can’t be mad.”
Durant counted the night as a personal success, even as the Suns suffered a defeat deflating to their flagging playoff hopes.
The event drew a sellout crowd of 16,246, setting a record for a sporting event in the arena for the third season in a row.
“It was loud and energetic the whole night,” Durant said. “I’m just very grateful for all the love I’ve received from this region of the world in the last 20 years.”
Paul reaches another NBA milestone
With 5:24 left in the first quarter, Paul reached to intercept an errant pass from Devin Booker — and also reached a milestone.
The steal pushed him past Jason Kidd for second place on the NBA’s all-time steals chart.
Paul grabbed another steal later in the game, bringing his career total to 2,686 and counting.
The point guard spent part of All-Star weekend hanging out with Kidd in San Francisco. Kidd, now the Dallas Mavericks’ coach, knew what was coming.
“He knew I was one away,” Paul said.
Earlier this season, the 39-year-old Paul also passed Kidd for second on the league’s all-time assist ledger. He trails first-place John Stockton on both charts.
“Chris has had so many accomplishments and milestones and we’ve been a part of a few this year,” Johnson said. “We’ve been lucky to live those through with him. He’s just been a tremendous example for our young guys and he’s been a tremendous player.”
