San Antonio Spurs win one for Victor Wembanyama

AUSTIN – When the Spurs returned to the locker room after their 120-109 win over the Phoenix Suns on Thursday night, they found a message waiting for them on their group chat that made the victory even sweeter.
“Great win,” the text read.
Even in his absence, Victor Wembanyama found a way to make his teammates smile.
Just hours after learning their 21-year-old French superstar would miss the rest of the season after being diagnosed with a blood clot in his right shoulder, the Spurs dedicated the game to Wembanyama before defeating the Suns in front of a record crowd of 16,246 at Moody Coliseum in a game they never trailed.
“I ain’t going to front, that’s for Vic,” Julian Champagnie said. “We know how bad he wants to be out here and how bad he wants to play and how much this game means to him. We feel for him that he can’t be out here with us.”
Before the game, acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said doctors treating Wembanyama expressed confidence the 7-foot-3 All-Star center would fully recover from the ailment – deep vein thrombosis – and return to play next season.
The Spurs declined to provide any details regarding the recovery process, but the condition is typically treated with blood-thinning medication.
“The medical experts and the people that are smarter than everybody in the room … confirm he’ll be done this year, and that there is no concern for Victor’s long-term health personally, or anything related to his basketball activities,” Johnson added.
The Spurs became concerned about Wembanyama’s health after he returned from All-Star weekend in San Francisco complaining “his arm didn’t feel completely normal,” Johnson said.
“That was articulated to our medical staff,” Johnson said. “They looked into it and that’s how we got here.”
Wembanyama capped his busy weekend in San Francisco, which included several public appearances, with a strong performance in the inaugural NBA All-Star Game mini-tournament Sunday night.
Johnson said “conversations” with the team’s medical staff about Wembanyama’s health probably started “around Monday.”
After winning rookie of the year last season, Wembanyama was putting up historic numbers in his sophomore campaign, averaging 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, an NBA-leading 3.8 blocks and 3.7 assists over 46 games. The only other player to finish a season averaging those numbers was Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in 1975-76.
Wembanyama was also the front-runner for defensive player of the year honors after blocking 176 shots. He also attempted 403 3-pointers, making him the only player in league history to finish a season with such numbers in those categories.
“It’s devastating news because anytime the league loses a player of that magnitude, it’s tough because you’re losing a main player of the league that the fans and people enjoy watching,” Johnson said.
Johnson said he has talked and texted with Wembanyama since he received the diagnosis.
“In terms of his reaction, I was not with him,” Johnson said. “I don’t want to speak to that. But I know Victor loves to play the game. You saw how he competed during All-Star weekend and he wants to be with his teammates. I know he’d want to finish this thing out, so I can only imagine (how difficult it is).”
De’Aaron Fox led the Spurs (24-29) with 26 points, including 11 in the final three minutes, to go along with nine rebounds, seven assists and two steals.
Chris Paul had 13 points and 10 assists, and five others enjoyed double-figure scoring nights, including Champagnie and Keldon Johnson with 15 each off the bench.
The Spurs capped their annual trip to Austin with a game against the Detroit Pistons on Friday night.
The Spurs never trailed in downing the Suns, who fell to 26-29 despite 27 points from Royce O’Neale and 22 from Texas-ex Kevin Durant.
The Suns pulled within two points twice midway through the fourth quarter, but the Spurs weren’t going to let it slip away while playing with what Keldon Johnson called “extra motivation” to please their linchpin player and friend.
“He is such an amazing player,” Keldon Johnson said of Wembanyama. "You guys get to see it just on the court, but off the court, he means so much to not only me but the whole team and the staff. He is one of the most amazing people to be around.
“So, not having him here, definitely it sucks, but we know this is how he would want it – us playing hard and going all in.”
Paul agreed.
“Man, we miss our guy … his presence, his energy is bigger than what he does on the court,” he said.
Mitch Johnson said he expects Wembanyama to be “very intellectual and process-driven” in his recovery, which is to say, he will handle it like he does everything else.
“It’s a minor setback for a major comeback,” the coach said.
