SAN FRANCISCO – Victor Wembanyama is ready for a break after playing in his first All-Star Game.

“I’ll try to try cool down and forget a little bit about basketball for 48 hours - that’s it,” the Spurs center said Sunday night.

He needs the rest for a couple of reasons.

The Spurs, who are set to return to action with a 23-29 record against Phoenix on Thursday in the first of back-to-back games in Austin, need him at his best if they are going to get back into the play-in race after losing 13 of their last 18 games.

And then there’s this: Wembanyama capped a busy All-Star Weekend by making good on his vow to go all out in the All-Star Game. There was no going through the motions for the 7-foot-3 center in the inaugural, four-team mini-tournament.

Stephen Curry won MVP honors on his home court at Chase Center after scoring 12 points on four 3-pointers in Shaq’s OGs 41-25 win over Chuck’s Global Stars, which included Wembanyama. But the 21-year-old Frenchman earned respect with maximum efforts off the bench in both the semifinals and the final.

“My biggest takeaway is that it’s possible to give a hundred percent on that court, to play hard, to play your ass off,” Wembanyama said. “And, for me, it’s the only way to play basketball, and I think it’ll only make the game better.”

Wembanyama scored a team-high 11 points on 5-for-7 shooting in the final. Playing for a team drafted by Charles Barkley and featuring several other international stars, he also had three rebounds and a block in eight minutes of the loss to the veteran-laded squad selected by Shaquille O’Neal and powered by future Hall of Famers like Curry and Kevin Durant.

Wembanyama vowed last week to “bring that contrast of a single guy who goes crazy, dives on the ball, hustles every play” in a game that for years has been plagued by players focused on recording highlight-reel plays while playing no defense.

Team Shaq’s Damian Lillard said Wembanyama delivered on that promise in the new four-team format that featured games with a target score of 40.

“I thought he played like he plays in a game, seriously,” Lillard said. "When I saw him, I was like, ‘He was not messing around.’ One time, he got fouled. The ref didn’t call it and he got mad.

“He knows one way, and you can tell that he’s going to play that way every time.”

Wembanyama was still on the bench when Shaq’s OGs built an 11-0 lead thanks to eight early points by Jayson Tatum.

Team Shaq won despite playing without the OG of OGs, LeBron James.

The NBA’s career scoring leader announced about 90 minutes before tip off he couldn’t play because of nagging foot and ankle issues. It was the first time since 2004, James was absent from the All-Star Game, ending his record streak of appearances in the elite contest at 20.

“I hate that,” said James, who played in his first All-Star Game in 2005.

Wembanyama had six points on 3-for-4 shooting in the Global Stars’ 41-32 semifinal win over Kenny’s Young Stars – a team selected by Kenny Smith – in the first semifinal. In six minutes, he also had four rebounds, a block and a steal.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the Global Stars, who twice trailed by five points, with 12 points on 5 for 5.

Wembanyma’s lob slam on a feed from Nikola Jokic gave the Global Stars a 34-27 advantage in the midst of a game-clinching 15-7 run. He also had a left-handed dunk to give his team a 23-21 advantage.

Wembanyama gave his stamp of approval to the mini-tournament after saying earlier he favored either a return to the traditional East versus West format or a new World versus U.S matchup,

“It was better than I expected,” he said. “It worked out really well. It felt like there were high stakes to the games, even though, of course, the effort is inconsistent.”

Wembanyama wasn’t the only Spur in the tournament. Rookie Stephon Castle played for Candace’s Rising Stars team, named for WNBA great Candace Parker, that lost 42-35 to Shaq’s OG’s in the first game of the night.

Lillard had nine points and Curry and Jaylen Brown contributed eight points each for the OGs, but Castle acquitted himself well, finishing with six points of 3 for 7, two rebounds, two assists and two steals in 11 minutes.

Castle suggested he and the other Rising Stars had no fear facing the OGs, which also included James Harden and Kyrie Irving.

“We play those guys year round, so we all share the league together,” Castle said. “They’ve been doing that for a minute now, but, at the end of the day, it is still basketball. … We just wanted to go out there and compete, give the crowd a show with the new format.”

One down moment in the game for Castle came when he missed a dunk with the Rising Stars trailing, 17-15.

“I just tried to dunk it too hard, honestly,” he said. “I hit back iron. … I just missed it, really.”

Team Candace earned a berth in the tournament by winning the Rising Stars mini-tournament Friday thanks in large part to a star turn by Castle that earned him MVP honors. Castle also was in the spotlight Saturday night when he went toe to toe with Mac McClung in the Slam Dunk Contest before the Orlando Magic G League became the first player to win the competition three years in a row.

“He performed well on the court and with a lot of media and appearances,” Wembanyama said of Castle. “I’m very proud of him.”

Each player on Team Shaq pocketed $125,000 for the victory. Wembanyama and the other Team Chuck runners-up earned $50,000, while the semifinal losers gained $25,000 each.

Now Wembanyama will turn his attention to trying to rejuvenate the Spurs, who are 12th in the Western Conference, 3 1/2 games behind 10th-place Golden State.

“Defense is the key,” said Wembanyama, who leads the league in blocks with 3.8 per game. “Going back to the status of having one of the best defenses in the league would be a huge help.”
