INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Victor Wembanyama did everything he possibly could to carry the “World” on his shoulders to victory.
The Spurs center failed in that mission, but he still emerged from his second NBA All-Star Game a big winner after he made good on his vow to go all out and elevate the play of everyone around him at the league’s 75th annual midseason showcase.
“It’s a game I personally cherish, so being competitive is the least I can do,” he said.
Tyrese Maxey scored nine points and Anthony Edwards had eight to lead the “Stars” squad to a 47-21 win over the “Stripes” team coached by the Spurs’ Mitch Johnson on Sunday in the championship game of the round-robin “U.S. vs. the World” tournament.
Edwards won the Most Valuable Player Award after hitting a 3-pointer with 13.3 seconds left that forced overtime in the first game, a 37-35 victory over Wembanyama and the international team.
The title match was the only one of the four 12-minute games that didn’t have a dramatic finish. It was the NBA’s fourth format in four years, and it provided some much-needed effort, including on the defensive end, to the sagging event.
And despite going 0-2, Wembanyama played a huge part in it.
“If you share that energy,” he said before the game, “people feel like they have a responsibility to share it back to you.”
From the opening tip, he backed up those words, scoring the tournament’s first points on a dunk and then following that show of force by draining a 3.
“I ain’t going to lie, Wemby set the tone. He came out and played hard, and we had to follow that," Edwards said after the 22-year-old Frenchman finished with 14 points on 4 of 5 from the field, 2 of 2 from long range and 4 of 4 from the foul line to go along with six rebounds and three blocks.
Jalen Brunson, who played for the Stripes, agreed with Edwards.
“Wemby’s a leader,” said the New York guard who helped the Knicks beat Wembanyama and the Spurs in the NBA Cup final in December. "The way he carries himself is fantastic for this game. I think he’s done a great job, and you see what his impact is on and off the court. He’s just doing what he does.”
Even if it might have had the members of the Spurs front office holding their collective breath at times, although Johnson said he was OK with Wembanyama going all out.
“I believe you typically get hurt when you’re worried about getting hurt, so I thought it was awesome that he played hard,” the coach said. “I thought all the guys played hard. I thought it was a competitive display of basketball amongst those guys and it was good to see Victor out there. Weird to be on the other side, though.”
Wembanyama’s reaction to defensive busts by the World team that allowed Edwards to hit his big 3 and Scottie Barnes to hit the game-winning shot from beyond the arc in OT highlighted how badly he wanted to win.
“You could see it on his face,” said Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox, who played for the Stripes.
Wembanyama walked slowly off the court with his hands on his hips after the defeat, signaling he wasn’t happy with the blown coverage.
“Yeah, it was our second time allowing a three when we shouldn’t have,” Wembanyama said. “I would have expected us to be
smarter right there, so that was disappointing.”
The Stripes squad, which included LeBron James and Kevin Durant, beat the younger Stars 42-40 in the second game on Fox’s 3-pointer at the buzzer. Fox said one of the best things about his clutch play is that a photographer captured a shot of him celebrating the play with James.
“That’s got to be one of the best pictures I think I have. … I’ve made game-winners under different circumstances, so I’m not going to say that’s up there, but that picture for sure is getting framed,” Fox said. “Might have to have him sign it.”

The third game featured Wembanyama going head to head with former Spurs star Kawhi Leonard.
Playing on his home court at the Los Angeles Clippers’ Intuit Dome, the MVP of the 2014 NBA Finals poured in 31 points before managing just one point in the final. But against the World, Leonard was brilliant, especially in the final seconds when he sank a tie-breaking 3-pointer on a step-back three over Karl-Anthony Towns with 3.5 seconds left in the Stripes’ 48-45 win.
Wembanyama had a chance to tie it, but he was off the mark with a 3-point attempt at the buzzer. In 10 minutes, he finished with 19 points on 6-of-8 shooting.
But Leonard was nearly unstoppable, hitting 11 of 13, including 6 of 7 from downtown.
“He’s a load,” Johnson said. “That was a dominant stretch he had there. … Quite a joy to watch.”
As was most of the tournament.
“To make it more fun,” Wembanyama said of what he hoped to accomplish by playing so hard. “I think it was pretty good. We got a guy like Kawhi going for 30, making every shot. It was a pretty good display of basketball. Better than last year, in my opinion. It was fun. I think being honest with ourselves is good.”
Asked if he would like to see the format used again next season in Phoenix, Wembanyama said, “I liked it. I liked it. I wouldn’t be against this format in the future, and I wouldn’t be against the regular East versus West either.”
Bottom line: He’s going to take it seriously no matter what.
