(Victor Wembanyama)

(De’Aaron Fox)

(Devin Vassell)

(Chris Paul)

(Harrison Barnes)

(Stephon Castle)

评分:A

(Jeremy Sochan)

(Julian Champagnie)

(Keldon Johnson)

(Mitch Johnson)

Grades: San Antonio Spurs at Charlotte Hornets – Game #49

The San Antonio Spurs (22-27) suffered a disappointing loss to the Charlotte Hornets (13-36) on Friday night. The Spurs will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to play the Orlando Magic.

Against the Hornets in Charlotte, the good guys came out of the gates very slowly. At the end of an ugly first quarter, the Spurs were down 34-22. The Hornets were able to stay comfortably ahead of the Spurs until late in the fourth quarter.

Scratching and clawing late in the game, San Antonio finally tied the game with 42 seconds remaining. With eight seconds left, the Spurs took the lead. Sadly, Miles Bridges hit a three-pointer with a second remaining to give the Hornets a one-point lead. De’Aaron Fox hit a three-pointer just after the buzzer sounded and Charlotte escaped with a 117-116 victory.

While the Spurs do deserve some credit for never giving up and climbing all the way back into the game, losing a game to a bad team like the Hornets makes this an unfortunate outing no matter how you slice it.

Spurs at Hornets – Final Grades

Victor Wembanyama

Wembanyama simply wasn’t efficient enough offensively. He was 1-for-9 from three-point range and needed 20 field goal attempts to score 16 points. He only got the line once and his passing was nothing special. The Spurs will struggle to win if Wembanyama isn’t a positive force on the offensive end. Defensively against the Hornets, the Frenchman was solid. He had five blocks, he rebounded well and he moved his feet when it was needed. Wembanyama didn’t have many mistakes on either side — but his struggles shooting-wise overshadowed his positives.

Grade: C-

De’Aaron Fox

Fox lived up to his reputation for being extremely clutch. He hit the shot to tie the game and then he hit the shot to give the Spurs a lead with eight seconds remaining. Fox then seemingly won the game with a buzzer-beater — but he released it just a hair late. Beyond his clutchness, Fox was good. He shot the ball well, made smart passes and finished without a turnover. His effort on defense was commendable, although the results were mixed.

Grade: B+

Devin Vassell

The good: Vassell was 4-for-7 from three-point range. He only had one turnover in 34 minutes. I liked his defensive effort. The bad: Vassell was 1-for-6 from two-point range. His shot-selection inside of the arc was very iffy. With the addition of Fox, he needs to realize he doesn’t need to make plays on his own too often.

Grade: B-

Chris Paul

Paul is still finding ways to produce even though Fox is handling more of the point guard duties. The 39-year-old hit a pair of three-pointers and handed out a team-high seven assists. Paul didn’t turn the ball over and could be relied upon to make smart decisions. Defensively, the Spurs tried to hide him but the Hornets were able to exploit his size a handful of times.

Grade: B

Harrison Barnes

Barnes missed all four of his three-point attempts but was 4-for-5 from two-point range. His drives were useful and his passing was better than usual. He was strong on the offensive glass but didn’t help much at all on the defensive glass. Barnes overall effort level could have been higher on defense.

Grade: C+

Stephon Castle

Wow, Castle showed off his vast potential in Charlotte. The rookie hit 3-of-5 three-pointers but, more impressively, he was a monster finishing in the paint. When he wasn’t using his athleticism to score at the rim, he was getting to the free throw line for one of his 11 attempts. I liked Castle’s defense, particularly his active hands. The only issue with the rookie’s performance was the fact that he didn’t take care of the ball well enough. His playmaking was limited by his four turnovers, including a couple costly ones. All in all, though, Castle poured in a career-high 33 points and the Spurs would have been annihilated without him.

Grade: A

Jeremy Sochan

I can’t complain with how Sochan played. He competed at an extremely high level. Pulling down 12 rebounds in 24 minutes was great work, especially because he had to fight for most of the caroms. Sochan also utilized his toughness and athleticism to finish at the rim on his way to 11 points. I liked his passing and he had many fine moments on the defensive end.

Grade: B+

Julian Champagnie

Champagnie had a couple good passes and a nice layup in transition but he failed to hit a three-pointer in his 19 minutes. His defense was also lackluster. Champagnie needs to do more in order to keep his key spot in the rotation.

Grade: C-

Keldon Johnson

I don’t know yet if it’s a coincidence but Johnson’s touches might be the touches that dry up with the addition of Fox. He didn’t do a whole lot of Friday night. On offense, Johnson just missed threes. On defense, he was mostly a spectator.

Grade: D+

Mitch Johnson

Johnson put the ball in Fox’s hands down the stretch — and that decision paid dividends. That said, Johnson needed to create easier shots for Wembanyama. Better playcalling throughout the game could have helped in that regard. The rotation made sense to me throughout the game.
