Game Preview: San Antonio Spurs at Atlanta Hawks
De’Aaron Fox makes his debut as the Spurs visit the Hawks.
The moment everyone has been waiting for is finally here. On Wednesday night, De’Aaron Fox will make his San Antonio Spurs debut against the Atlanta Hawks. It marks the first game of a new era of Spurs basketball that runs through the speedy point guard and Victor Wembanyama. It also kicks off with a team that is ironically tied to the destiny of this iteration of the Silver and Black.
The Hawks owe the Spurs their 2025 and 2027 first-round picks. Those assets are what could eventually make San Antonio a championship contender. Winning games against them to improve the value of those picks is always a good thing. The Hawks are struggling right now, losing eight of their last nine games. Atlanta is dealing with injuries to key players like Jalen Johnson, Clint Capela, and Bogdan Bogdanovic.
Still, this Hawks team is feisty, and Trae Young always plays up for the Spurs. It’ll be a good test for this new-look Spurs squad.

Spurs Injuries: Charles Bassey – Out (MCL sprain), Riley Minix – Out (G League), Chris Paul – Questionable (finger sprain)
Hawks Injuries: Bogdan Bogdanovic – Out (not with team), Kobe Bufkin – Out (shoulder), Clint Capela – Out (back spasms), Jalen Johnson – Out (shoulder), Daeqwon Plowdon – Questionable (G League), Trae Young – Probable (achilles tendinitis), Cody Zeller – Out (not with team)
What to watch for:
Fox’s fit
It’s one game, but there may be signs of how Fox fits with the Spurs immediately. Watch out for how he operates in the pick-and-roll with Wembanyama or how he sets up players like Devin Vassell for easier threes. His offensive gravity will likely play a major role, but it may be even more interesting to watch how he operates defensively. With Wembanyama behind him and one of Jeremy Sochan or Stephon Castle working on the ball, he’ll have free reign to jump passing lanes and try to create steals. It’s easy to see him slotting in with the Spurs’ current team, but it’ll be fascinating to watch it play out in real-time.
Will Jordan McLaughlin play?
Chris Paul has been listed as questionable for Wednesday’s game. Assuming Fox and Castle start and Paul sits, that leaves the newly acquired Jordan McLaughlin and Blake Wesley as the sole backup point guards on the roster. Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson may want to get a look at the newly acquired McLaughlin in a bench role against Atlanta. His shooting would be a welcomed addition to a bench unit that has struggled to hit from deep. If nothing else, he’ll bring a veteran presence to help steady the team when Fox is off the court.
Backup center minutes
Charles Bassey went down with an apparent knee injury in the Spurs Monday night loss to the Memphis Grizzlies. Without him, that leaves Sochan as the de facto backup “center.” Luckily for the Spurs, Atlanta lacks some size inside. Onyeka Okongwu will likely start at center, standing at just 6-foot-8. The Hawks’ backup bigs, Dominick Barlow and Larry Nance Jr. are both undersized centers as well. Johnson will once again be asking Sochan to step up and play big in the second unit, and don’t be surprised if Sandro Mamukelashvili plays some spot minutes as well.
