“I could feel like everybody was tired of losing,” Wembanyama said.

3 takeaways as fiery Wembanyama leads Spurs over Bucks
San Antonio Spurs guard Tre Jones (33), forward Keldon Johnson (0) and forward Jeremy Sochan (10) block Milwaukee Bucks guard Damian Lillard (0) at the net during the second half at Frost Bank Center on Friday, Jan. 31, 2025, in San Antonio, Texas. The Spurs defeated the Bucks 144-118.
For newly christened Spurs All-Star Victor Wembanyama, Friday’s resounding, slump-busting victory over Milwaukee could be summed up in nine English words.
“I could feel like everybody was tired of losing,” Wembanyama said.
Losers of eight of their past 10, the Spurs took their frustrations out on a Bucks squad just trying to make it home after a long road trip, running away with a 144-118 win in the second half at the Frost Bank Center.
A night after earning his first career All-Star invitation, Wembanyama went for 30 points, 14 rebounds and six blocks, going toe-to-toe with Milwaukee’s Giannis Anteokounmpo, who was the leading vote-getter in the Eastern Conference.
Anteokounmpo was no slouch himself, with 35 points and 14 rebounds, but for the first time in three tries, Wembanyama came out of a game against the Greek Freak victorious.
Keldon Johnson scored 24 points off the bench while rookie Stephon Castle added 20 points, eight rebounds and six assists as the Spurs outscored Milwaukee 74-46 in the second half to blow open a game that was a one-point Bucks lead at intermission.
“I thought we did a really good job of setting the tone at the start of the third quarter with our physicality and being really tight on our (defensive) execution,” Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson said. “I thought we did a really good job of our communication. That’s something we’ve really been trying to emphasize.”
The outcome continued a bizarre stretch in which the Spurs either claimed a lopsided victory or — more often of late — absorbed a lopsided loss.
Since a 121-105 loss at Milwaukee on Jan. 8, the Spurs have played nine consecutive games decided by double digits.
Friday marked the Spurs’ highest-scoring game of the season, surpassing a 140-110 win over Indiana last week in Paris.
With Miami coming to town Saturday for the second night of a back-to-back, the Spurs will seek to turn in their first two-game winning streak since Jan. 3.
San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama (1) blocks a shot by Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo (34) in the first half at Frost Bank Center on Friday, Jan. 31, 2025, in San Antonio, Texas.
Even after Friday’s stirring victory, Wembanyama hopes the Spurs will continue to remember the “tired of losing” feeling.
“We didn’t let go the whole game,” he said. “The game was consistently hard, but we make efforts for 48 minutes and you look up and you’re up 20. Because the game was consistently hard, but there wasn’t one moment where we let them be and score on us and make some huge runs.”
Here are three takeaways from Friday’s victory, which improved the Spurs to 21-24:
1. Keldon Johnson got things started
It took a bit for the Spurs to find their footing coming out of the gate. Enter Johnson, who played the super sixth man role to a T.
Johnson’s 20 points in the first half, most of it running straight downhill into the teeth of the Milwaukee defense, helped the Spurs ease their way into the game.
“My teammates hit me in the right spots to make shots, and the rest takes care of itself,” Johnson said. “Just being aggressive, doing what I work on going from there.”
In the end, Johnson finished with his second 20-point outing of the month. The other — coincidentally or not — also came against the Bucks. He scored an identical 24 in the Spurs’ loss in Milwaukee on Jan. 8.
Along with Wembanyama, Johnson was one of two players in double figures in the first half for the Spurs, who needed every bit of it to survive what was shaping up to be a shootout.
“I thought his energy and activity was great,” Mitch Johnson said. “It’s funny sometimes, when you put yourself into the game with those effort and energy aspects, the ball seems to find you. You make a couple shots.”
Johnson’s role on the Spurs has changed since Wembanyama arrived. As trade rumors swirl, he proved again Friday he can be a valuable bench piece.
2. Keeping Castle a high priority
As a blockbuster trade for Sacramento guard De’Aaron Fox continues to possibly take shape, Castle has become an oft-mentioned target of the Kings.
It makes sense.
Outside of Wembanyama — who sources say is safe from any trade discussion — Castle is probably the Spurs’ most coveted asset.
His performance Friday showed why. It also showed why the Spurs would walk over broken glass to keep Castle out of any deal from Fox, as good as the Kings’ All-Star point guard has become.
Castle was poised. He came up big in big moments. He showed persistence early when whistles did not go his way, finding his way to 10 free throw attempts that matched a season high.
Throw in his strengths as an individual and team defender, and it is not difficult to see why the Spurs view the No. 4 pick in last summer’s draft as a key building block for the future.
Castle also comes with a low-cost rookie scale contract the Spurs can control for three seasons after this one.
It is hard to call anyone on the Spurs’ roster besides Wembanyama truly untouchable in a trade. Castle comes closer than anyone else.
3. The record-setting 3-point shooting didn’t hurt
As is often the case in this day and age of the NBA, the Spurs set the fuse on a blowout by outgunning Milwaukee from the 3-point stripe.
The Spurs set a franchise record with 24 made 3-pointers, snapping a club mark that was all of two months old. The Spurs made 23 3-pointers in a Dec. 1 win over Sacramento, which in turn broke the team record of 22 set most recently in a Nov. 11 victory over the Kings.
Read that again: Friday marked the third time this season the Spurs reached a franchise record from the 3-point line.
At least they found a new opponent to victimize this time.
IT’S FOURTH QUARTER TIME!!!

The Bucks’ defensive priorities dared the Spurs — a middle-of-the-pack 3-point team — to fire away from distance.
“They do such a great job at protecting the rim,” Mitch Johnson said. “Sometimes they dare you to try to find open guys and be patient enough to get good 3s.”
Johnson also gave his team credit for its passing leading to a bevy of better looks. “On time and on target” has been a mantra of the Spurs’ practice sessions of late.
**“**Our passing was phenomenal tonight just in terms of on time and on target,” said Johnson, whose team generated 37 assists. “Those are some of the aspects that we’ve been really trying to emphasize.”
