Giannis Antetokounmpo calls out Spurs’ Chris Paul for foul

The Spurs defeated the Bucks 144-118.

Not long after the final horn sounded on the Spurs’ cathartic 144-118 victory over Milwaukee on Friday, Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo waited for Chris Paul near midcourt of the Frost Bank Center with a wild look in his eye.

“Yeah, I don’t know if he wants to go have a glass of wine,” Paul said later with a smirk.

It turns out Antetokounmpo was not in the mood for revelry.

The nine-time All-Star had taken issue with what he deemed an unnecessary foul from Paul late in the fourth quarter and was apparently ready to settle the score.

“People that know me, they don’t try me,” Antetokounmpo said. “If you try me, it’s a different side. If you try me, you’re going to get that different side of me."

The play in question occurred with 3:46 remaining and the Spurs ahead by 20.

Antetokounmpo spun through the lane toward the rim, and – depending on what colored glasses one is wearing – either stumbled over or was shoved by Paul.

While prone on the floor, Antetokounmpo pointed and Paul and shouted at him, leading to a brief confrontation once the Milwaukee forward was on his feet.

Paul was whistled for a foul on the play, which upon video review officials decided not to upgrade to a flagrant.

When Antetokounmpo missed the first of two foul shots, Paul walked over and – perhaps not entirely sincerely – attempted to help with his shooting form.

The mockery seemed to set Antetokounmpo off more.

Antetokounmpo and Paul exchanged heated words after Paul fouled him in the fourth quarter.

“Giannis is as levelheaded as anybody in our league,” Bucks coach Doc Rivers said. “So if he was upset at something, I’m going to probably guess something happened.”

Asked why he was waiting for Paul after the game, Antetokounmpo elaborated.

“At the end of the day, I think we’re all men,” Antetokounmpo said. "We all respect one another. If words cross the line, then there’s got to be consequences. … If I feel like you’re putting my livelihood, my career and my body in jeopardy – enough is enough, brother. I have a family to feed.”

Paul declined Antetokounmpo’s invitation to meet at midcourt, for wine or something more menacing.

“Everybody wanna be fighters,” Paul said with a shrug.

Wemby sweated out All-Star nod

Victor Wembanyama expressed gratitude after Friday’s game for his first NBA All-Star nomination, saying he was “definitely proud” of the accomplishment.

His selection as a Western Conference reserve, as voted upon by coaches, was announced in a nationally televised Thursday afternoon. Through sheer luck of the draw, the Spurs 21-year-old center heard his name called last out of 14.

“It felt a little weird,” Wembanyama said. “I was at the very last, so I was shaking a little bit in the moment. But it’s definitely a milestone.”

Wembanyama noted he was not informed of his inclusion beforehand, meaning he had to learn the news like everyone else watching at home on TNT.

“Like common mortals,” Wembanyama said.

Another month, another 3-point record

The Spurs notched a season scoring high against the Bucks in part behind a franchise-record 24 made 3-pointers.

Eleven Spurs converted at least one 3-point attempt, also a club record. Wembanyama led the way with five (on 11 tries) while Keldon Johnson went 4-of-5 off the bench.

The Bucks’ defensive scheme baited the Spurs — a middle-of-the-pack 3-point team — to fire away from distance.

“They do such a great job at protecting the rim,” Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson said. “Sometimes they dare you to try to find open guys and be patient enough to get good 3s.”

Friday’s game marked the third time this season the Spurs set or equaled the franchise record for 3-pointers. On Dec. 1, they made 23 in a victory over Sacramento, surpassing the 22 they made in a different win over the Kings on Nov. 11.

Johnson also gave his team credit for ball movement leading to a bevy of better looks against the Bucks.

**“**Our passing was phenomenal just in terms of on time and on target,” said Johnson, whose team generated 37 assists. “Those are some of the aspects that we’ve been really trying to emphasize.”
