3 takeaways as Victor Wembanyama leads Spurs to rout of Bucks

San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) walks off the court after colliding with Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo (34) in the first quarter at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Thursday, Jan. 15, 2026.
Milwaukee coach Doc Rivers got a bad feeling when his team walked into the Frost Bank Center on Thursday to face the Spurs.
“When we last saw them, they were pretty good,” Rivers said. “They blew us out here.”
The Spurs did not do much to make Rivers and the Bucks feel welcome this time around, either.
Victor Wembanyama shook off a first quarter knee scare to finish with 22 points and 10 rebounds, helping lead the Spurs to a rollicking 119-101 victory.
Wembanyama got to those totals in 21:43 of court time. He did not play in the fourth quarter, with the Spurs already ahead 106-69.
He played 2:42 of a more tightly contested first quarter after banging knees with Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Wembanayama limped from one end of the court directly to the locker room, where he remained until the start of the second quarter.

The Spurs held their own without him, then blew the doors off the Bucks once Wembanyama returned.
It wasn’t exactly as bad as it was during Milwaukee’s last trip to San Antonio last January, when the Spurs rolled to a 144-118 victory.
But it was satisfying enough.
Stephon Castle added 19 points, De’Aaron Fox provided 18 and Julian Champagnie added another double-double with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Antetokounmpo had 21 points to lead the Bucks. Like Wembanyama, he didn’t play in the fourth quarter with the game already decided.
Here are three takeaways from Thursday’s victory, which brought the Spurs to the midway mark of the season holding onto second place in the Western Conference:
1. Spurs reach the halfway point in style
The Spurs capped a fine first half with their most lopsided victory since the season opener, when they raised the curtain with a 125-92 thumping of Dallas.
With Thursday’s win, the Spurs hit the 41-game mark with a 28-13 record.
It is their best record at the halfway point since 2016-17, when they were 32-9 on their way to a 61-win finish.
The Spurs had struggled since Christmas Day, going 4-6 heading into Thursday. By blasting the Bucks, perhaps they can open the second half with some momentum.
2. Castle does yeoman’s work on Giannis
Antetokoumpo started the game as if shot out of a cannon. In the first seven minutes, he scored 14 points, drew two quick fouls on Wembanyama and blocked the star Frenchman’s first foray to the basket.
The Spurs dealt with the former NBA MVP much better over the final 3½ quarters.

Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo (34) drives past San Antonio Spurs forward Keldon Johnson (3) during the first quarter at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Thursday, Jan. 15, 2026.
Somewhat counterintuitively, that turnaround began not long after Wembanyama limped to the locker room after banging knees with Antetokounmpo.
With Wembanyama shaking things off in the final 9:18 of the quarter, the Spurs used the 6-foot-5 Castle to try and neutralize Antetokounmpo. When Castle needed a breather, the Spurs went with a small dose of Keldon Johnson.
Those matchups continued even after Wembanyama returned to start the second quarter. Antetokounmpo managed only seven points in his final 15 minutes of court time.
With Castle able to contend at least somewhat with Antetokoumpo, it left Wembanyama free to roam the court on defense.
The Bucks’ offense never got right after that.
3. 3-point shooting makes a difference. Who knew?
In those 10 slogging games since Christmas Day, the Spurs were the second-worst 3-point shooting team in the NBA at 28.4%.
The lid blew off that slump at Milwaukee’s expense.
The Spurs made 16 3-pointers Thursday, their most in the span of 12 games. They did so in 37 attempts, a 43.2% clip that far eclipsed their January average.
Wembanyama was the ringleader of the 3-point game, making 5 of 6 from long range. It was his most 3-pointers since sinking six at Chicago on Nov. 11.
Fox — who had been hitting a frigid 17.2% over his past 10 games — converted 3 of 6.
Sometimes basketball is not rocket science. The Spurs’ offense looks a lot better when the 3-balls are falling.
