Mitch Johnson says L.A. is in Spurs’ ‘hearts, prayers’

DENVER, COLORADO - JANUARY 03: Interim coach Mitch Johnson of the San Antonio Spurs works the sideline against the Denver Nuggets in the first quarter at Ball Arena on January 03, 2025 in Denver, Colorado.

LOS ANGELES - The Spurs’ “thoughts and prayers” are with the “people in the city of Los Angeles, the firefighters and all others participating in the relief efforts,” acting head coach Mitch Johnson said before the team faced the Lakers on Monday night.

“The images and videos of the unbelievable level of destruction of this great city is absolutely heartbreaking and we just hope maybe tonight can be some small slice of normalcy and positive distraction at this time,” Johnson said.

Fueled by ferocious Santa Ana winds, several wildfires have ravaged the L.A. area since last Tuesday, killing at least 24 people, displacing thousands of others and destroying more than 12,000 structures.

Monday’s game was supposed to be the second of a two-game set between the Spurs and Lakers at Crypto.com Arena, but the NBA postponed the first contest Saturday night for fear it would take away resources needed to fight one of the most expensive conflagrations in U.S. history.

The Spurs arrived in Los Angeles at around 4 a.m. last Thursday after playing in Milwaukee on Wednesday night. The wildfires, including the massive one that destroyed Pacific Palisades, forced the team to move from its hotel in Santa Monica on Thursday afternoon to downtown L.A. 25 miles away as a precaution.

After the NBA announced late Friday that Saturday’s game had been postponed, the Spurs practiced at Crypto.com Arena on Saturday and Sunday before the league informed them Sunday afternoon that Monday’s game would go on as scheduled.

Johnson said players were “great” in the way they dealt with “a lot of uncertainty.”

“It’s obviously a time that’s a lot bigger than basketball and our guys understand that and we’ve just been very patient and, again, would never want to prioritize something that’s not important at this time,” Johnson said. “I do think we’ve been able to get in the gym the last couple days and it’s helped just to get guys out of their rooms and be active and whatnot.”

The family of Spurs point guard Chris Paul had to evacuate their home in Los Angeles. Paul’s wife, Jada, said in a social media post that they were safe.

“In regards to Chris, again, similar to everybody that has people they know or people that have been affected, our thoughts and prayers are with him and his crew, but not going to speculate or get into his private stuff,” Johnson said.

Lakers coach JJ Redick, who lost his home in the Palisades fire, praised the way his players, staff and the Lakers organization “has supported, rallied around me, rallied around the city and clearly loved on my family.”

“I’ve been overwhelmed with the amount of support and generosity that people have shown to my family and really all families that have been affected by this,” Redick said. “We’ve witnessed it. We’ve been a part of it.”

The Lakers dedicated Monday’s game to Los Angeles’ first responders and said in a statement they planned to “honor the strength of the community as recovery efforts begin for those impacted” by the wildfires.

The NBA also said it would donate $1 million for immediate relief to the American Red Cross, World Central Kitchen and additional organizations.

Beginning with Monday’s game, the Lakers are hosting donation drives at their homes games. The club encouraged fans to bring unused, unopened items to support the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank’s relief efforts.
