Spurs swap hotels to stay far away from L.A. wildfires
LOS ANGELES – With smoke from the wildfires that destroyed Pacific Palisades blowing into Santa Monica, the Spurs changed hotels Thursday afternoon for “precautionary safety reasons,” a team spokesman said.
The Spurs arrived in Santa Monica around 4 a.m. Thursday after flying into Los Angeles following their game in Milwaukee on Wednesday night. They checked into their usual team hotel but hours later relocated to a downtown location more than 30 miles away from the wildfires that devastated areas north of Santa Monica.
The Spurs originally planned to practice at a high school gym in Santa Monica, but the school closed due to the fires.
As the Spurs relocated away from the coast, the picturesque, wealthy seaside community of Pacific Palisades lay in smoldering ruins. Smoke from the most destructive wildfire in L.A. history wafted through the hills overlooking Santa Monica throughout Thursday into Friday.
The Spurs are scheduled to play two games against the Lakers at Crypto.com Arena in downtown L.A. on Saturday and Monday. The NBA postponed the Lakers game against Charlotte scheduled for Thursday night, but it doesn’t appear as if the league will do the same with the games against the Spurs.
Citing sources, ESPN reported Lakers coach JJ Redick’s rental home in Pacific Palisades was one of the 5,300 structures in that area lost in the biggest of multiple fires raging across the Los Angeles metropolitan area this week.
Golden State Warriors coach and former Spur Steve Kerr, meanwhile, lost his childhood home in Palisades. Kerr said Thursday his 90-year-old mother, Ann, is safe after evacuating.
Redick told reporters he would still like to play on Saturday against the Spurs.
“I think I have a pretty strong ability to compartmentalize things,” Redick said, per LakersNation.com. “Tried to get out of that with therapy but the therapist didn’t do his job so still compartmentalizing.
“Being here, for me, was great because it gave me something to look forward to, honestly. Being around the guys and coaching, I told them this, we’re prepared for whatever tomorrow. We obviously are gonna work with the NBA, the Spurs, the city and do what’s right. I want to play tomorrow. I want to coach tomorrow. I want these guys to play tomorrow. And if we can play, we’ll play. I do believe that for everybody that has been impacted by this, there is a grieving process. There is a healing process. I can only speak for myself, part of my healing and grieving process is being here with these guys and coaching basketball.”
The Spurs also have been touched by the fires.
“It’s definitely scary, everything that is going on,” Spurs point guard Chris Paul, who has raised his family in L.A. since his days with the Los Angeles Clippers, told reporters after the game in Milwaukee. “I’m sending so much love and prayers to some of my closest friends and family who have lost everything.”
Paul’s wife and two children evacuated their home Tuesday, fleeing to a hotel in a safer part of Los Angeles.
More than five fires, largely uncontained and fueled by powerful Santa Ana winds gusting to more than 70 mph, have ravaged the area. One even spread into the Hollywood Hills bordering on the world’s entertainment center.
Officials have reported at least 10 deaths so far.
Fire crews have struggled to gain containment on all the fires, including the one in Pacific Palisades, which covered more than 19,000 acres.
Backup centers struggle to earn minutes
Acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson is encouraging Zach Collins and Charles Bassey to keep it simple as they both seek to play better while backing up Victor Wembanyama.
Collins and Bassey are struggling to gain a foothold at reserve center but neither has earned a consistent spot in the rotation, sparking speculation that the Spurs could seek a big man before the trade deadline expires Feb. 6.
“Simple, solid plays,” Johnson said of what he wants to see from Collins and Bassey. “Not trying to do anything outside yourself or extend themselves where they feel like they have to make some certain plays. It’s a holistic approach to how we want to play and that’s probably the best way to answer this. We want to play the same way for 48 minutes regardless of the lineups or who’s on the court.”
