CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - JANUARY 06: Coby White #0 of the Chicago Bulls dunks the ball over Victor Wembanyama #1 of the San Antonio Spurs during the second half at the United Center on January 06, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois.

CHICAGO – For about 47 minutes Monday, things had not gone well for the Chicago Bulls whenever they dared challenge the Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama.

Driving the lane with the game in the balance, Bulls guard Coby White came up with a novel solution for his team’s Wemby problem.

“I closed my eyes,” White said, “and it worked out.”

White’s driving dunk put the finishing touches on Chicago’s 114-110 come-from-behind victory.

It is one the Spurs like to have back.

They did not trail for the first 47 minutes and 23 seconds, and led by as many as 19 points. Though the Bulls chipped into that deficit a bit, the Spurs still found themselves ahead 95-82 entering the final frame.

Then the wheels came flying off into Lake Michigan.

The Spurs managed only four field goals in the final 7:35, going scoreless over the final three minutes, as the Bulls closed on a 10-0 run to steal the game at the finish line.

“I think the attention to detail and respect for some of the little things that went into when we got the lead wavered,” Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson said. “And then we had a fight on our hands.”

White’s twisting layup around Wembanyama put Chicago ahead 111-110 with 47.2 seconds to go, the Bulls’ first lead of the night.

Moments later, White attacked the lane for a soaring dunk with Wembanyama closing to push the Bulls’ edge to three.

Zach LaVine scored 35 points to lead the Bulls, who also got 24 points and 11 rebounds from Nikola Vucevic and 23 from White.

The Spurs squandered 23 points, 14 blocks and eight blocks from Wembanyama, who for the second game in a row faded with his team down the stretch.

Chris Paul delivered 18 points and nine assists for the Spurs, who had eight players score in double figures.

It wasn’t enough to get the Spurs past the Bulls, who have now won six in a row over San Antonio to tie their longest winning streak in the series between the teams.

“In the last 100 some odd minutes, we played really good basketball,” Johnson said. “We are playing good basketball, but that is something we have to get better at. You have to win close games in this league, but we should have done what we had to when it wasn’t close to sustain and maintain.”

Wembanyama agreed.

“Right now, we should have mor wins,” Wembanyama said. “But we don’t deserve more wins because this is where we are at.”

Here are three takeaways from one of the Spurs’ most disappointing defeats of the season, which dropped the Spurs to 18-18:

1. Another fourth-quarter meltdown

It was the second consecutive game the Spurs blew down the stretch.

Two nights earlier, the Spurs blew a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter at home against Denver before falling 122-111 in overtime.

“Sooner or later, we’re going to get tired of it,” Paul said. “You know what I mean?”

For the second game in a row, the Spurs’ fourth-quarter power outage included Wembanyama. Against the Nuggets, Wembanyama managed a total of three points in the fourth quarter and overtime.

Against Chicago, he mustered a solitary free throw, missing all four of his field-goal attempts. Paul helped lift the Spurs’ foundering offense some, with seven points in the fourth quarter.

It wasn’t enough to jump-start the Spurs’ anemic offense down the stretch.

“There can always be a magnification of the last two minutes,” Harrison Barnes said,” but I think when you look at the third quarter, the rhythm that Kobe and Zach LaVine were able to establish, that’s what changed the game. When we were up 17 or 18 and these guys started getting easy layups, they started getting into a rhythm and going from there.”

2. Wemby’s block party rolls on

Wembanyama’s eight-block game marked the eighth time in the past 11 contests that he has registered at least four swats.

He has blocked a shot in 70 consecutive games, the longest streak in Spurs’ history. He is the first NBA player to register a 70-game block streak since Atlanta’s Josh Smith did it in 76 consecutive games in 2006 and 2007.

In addition, Wembanyama became the first player in the league this season to register 100 3-pointers, 100 blocks and 100 assists.

He did it in 31 games, the fastest to reach those plateaus in a season in NBA history.

3. As promised, CP3 rediscovered rhythm

For Paul, Monday marked the first double-digit scoring outing since Christmas Day, when he went for 13 points in a road loss at New York.

After going 1-for-9 for two points in the Spurs’ loss to Denver on Saturday, the 39-year-point guard vowed to become more involved in the scoring portion of the offense.

“We talked about coming out and being aggressive,” Paul said. “I think I just got into a routine of finding everybody else instead of looking for my own shot. So it’s a mindset.”

Paul made good on his promise to increase his offensive presence. He nearly delivered a classic Paul finish.

Paul was the only Spurs player to make a field goal in the final seven minutes, with a three-shot, seven-point flurry late in the fourth.

That put the Spurs ahead 110-103 with 3:53 to play. The Spurs did not score again, Paul included.

He missed three attempts during the Spurs’ fallow period to close the game.

As the season resumes Wednesday in Milwaukee, Paul says he plans to continue to strike a balance between scoring and facilitating.

“Luckily, I’ve done this long enough,” Paul said. “I sort of know what I’m doing.”
