A 10-0 explosion by Wemby cut the lead to just 3 halfway through the quarter though, and the Spurs somehow found themselves in a clutch time situation. Good teams finish games well. We finally have talent that is good enough and developed enough to close out games better than other teams when the game slows down and the defense picks up. There was a section of the fourth where the bulls didn’t score a bucket for nearly 5 minutes. That sort of intensity and effort will take this group far. If they’re willing to give everything they have on defense that late in the game they’re going to win a bunch of games. Finding a way late is really encouraging. Cause you don’t always have it every night. Going 10-33 from 3 last year would’ve meant we lost. everyone not named wemby went 4-24 16% from 3 that’s insane and we still won

This is the most ideal Wemby. When Wemby is a three level scorer and getting to the line, he’s genuinely ungaurdable. I’m aware this is an easier matchup for Wemby but regaining his three point shot and ramping up his attempts is going to bring him right back into MVP convos and end this dry spell he’s in. So efficient too, he’s so good.

It’s basically a no-brainer because that’s how he becomes unguardable (like a tall version of curry). The defense sags off he busts a 3. The d tightens up, he drives by. They double/triple team, he finds the open man. Hope this version of Wemby sticks around.

i watched the 2nd & 3rd quarters. casual observations:

when (mostly) healthy, the spurs have lots of moving pieces that are not accustomed to playing alongside one another. this really showed on defensive lapses. the team will take some time to gel. let’s see where they are at the halfway mark.

spurs f.t. shooting has greatly improved the past few games. 83% ft% over their last five games. i like it!
stephon “definitely not a point guard” castle had 11 assists and one turnover during the game. that makes 50 assists and 16 turnovers his last 5 games, a 3.1 a/t.o. ratio. he also nabbed 3 steals so he now averages >2 steals per game his last five games. i like it!

contending nba teams typically have winning road records. road games have been a real struggle for the spurs during the wemby area; however, this year’s model has a winning road record (3-2) through the first eighth of the season. i like it!

Castle played great, but this win was all 4th quarter Wemby. He just took over the game.

Mitch is going to have to learn to either prioritize winning every game or experimenting with nutty lineups. I swear he had a center less lineup in there for a while, despite having all the bigs available and clear evidence from prior games that going with Sochan at the 5 is a recipe for losing. And then he’d go to double big lineups despite all the hot outside shooting from Chicago. This game would have been a loss except for Victor hitting those threes late. I don’t want to be negative; it was a great game to watch, and Chicago is good. But let’s not get too cute with the lineups. Let’s build some chemistry ESPECIALLY on the defensive end. Those open shooters for the Bulls were not any single player’s fault, it’s an issue of better rotations and more teamwork on the defensive end of the floor. That takes lots of reps as a unit.

What’s clear to me is that Mitch is very willing to adjust his lineups within the game based on who’s playing well and what the opponent is doing.

Sochan missing defensive rotations and giving nothing on offense? Sit him. Fox not feeling it tonight, grinding the offense to a halt, unable to execute set plays when his number is called? Sit him.

Let’s also recognize the adjustments Castle has made in the past 4-5 games to drive offensive production and limit turnovers. All while leading the perimeter defense effort. What. A. Stud.

• I think that the lineup experiments by Mitch made it harder for the team to develop rhythm (or keep the rhythm they had in the first quarter). But in a long season you have to experiment in a deep team like Spurs. So, this is understandable.
• Spurs have a problem of having too many minute deserving players. Both in the front court and back court. Again, in a long season, this is a good problem to have. But for right now, it is hard not to feel bad for Sochan. He was a good contributor in the last few games. He is a good Spur, too.
• I don’t think Fox played a very good game. He had way too many live ball turnovers (they attacked his handle and his hands) that turned the game around. This is only his 2nd game so I would say he was pretty good so far, despite.the turnovers. I hope he hits around 35% of his 3 pointers this season, with at least one pull up per game this year. It would help the team and other aspects of his game a lot.
