Image

3 takeaways as Wembanyama leads Spurs to rout of Clippers

Victor Wembanyama capped his dominating December with yet another strong performance.

Wembanyama scored 21 of his game-high 27 points in the first half as the Spurs rolled to a 122-86 wire-to-wire win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday night in the final game of 2024.

It was the largest margin of victory for the Spurs this season, and Wembanyama triggered it with a commanding first half en route to his 20th game of 20-plus points this season. The Spurs led by as many as 41 points in the fourth as they avenged a 113-104 loss to the Clippers on Nov. 4 in Los Angeles after blowing a 26-point first quarter lead.

Logging 26 minutes after exiting the game for good with about eight minutes left in the fourth quarter, the 2024 Rookie of the Year also had nine rebounds, five assists, three blocks and one steal to lead the Spurs (17-16) to their second win in their last three games.

“I wanted to stay in that play-in and playoff race,” Wembanyama said, noting the Spurs are ninth in the Western Conference. “I also happened to feel good today.”

He finished 10-for-18 from the field, including one bucket from beyond the arc to extend his NBA-record streak of games with one or more blocks and one or more 3s to 24. He has also recorded a block in 67 straight games for the longest streak since Josh Smith did it in 76 straight games in 2006-07.

It was a historic month for Wembanyama, who finished December with 342 points, 120 rebounds, 58 assists, 53 blocks and 43 3-pointers. According to Spurs broadcaster Dan Weiss, the 7-foot-3 center is the first player in NBA history to produce 300-plus points, 100-plus rebounds, 50-plus blocks, 50-plus assists and 40-plus 3s in a single month.

And he did much of it in spectacular fashion.

“I don’t think about trying to show off, but it’s true that I try to find new ways to improve my game and to find ways around the adjustment of the defenders,” Wembanyama said. “And I am not scared of the unconventional.”

Keldon Johnson had 17 point for the Spurs, who led by 20 points at halftime and broke the 30-point mark in the first, second and fourth quarters.

Stephon Castle, who started the second half after a back injury forced Jeremy Sochan to take an early shower, had 15 points and Harrison Barnes added 11.

James Harden had 17 points for the Clippers (19-14), who were playing the second game of a back-to-back.

Here are three takeaways from one of just two home games the Spurs will play in a seven-game span:

1. Even Paul is amazed by what Wembanyama is doing

Chris Paul has seen and experienced just about everything in his 20 years in the league, but he admitted after Tuesday’s game that what Wembanyama is doing in his second year in the league is totally unique.

“He makes the game so easy,” the 39-year-old point guard said. “I think I’ve already gotten to a point where I take him for granted at times, like the shot blocking, the defense, all the things. So, never seen anything like it.”

In addition to his otherworldly skill set, Wembanyama, who turns 21 on Saturday, also has other attributes that make him rare, Paul said.

“I can’t say enough how mature he is, his game, his mentality, how hungry he is to continue to get better, and I think everyone forgets this is just his second year,” Paul said.

2. Clippers are bad news for Sochan

For the second time this season, Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan suffered an injury against the Clippers.

Castle started the second half in place of Sochan, who the Spurs ruled out for the remainder of the game with a sore lower back. Sochan missed 13 games between Nov. 6 and Dec. 1 after fracturing his left thumb on Nov. 4 in a 113-104 loss in Los Angeles.

But his latest injury while facing the Clippers isn’t considered serious, a team spokesman said. With the Spurs up by 20 points at the half, they were positioned well to give him a rest in the second half rather than risk a more serious injury.

3. Castle showed his maturity yet again

Having hit a rough patch in his otherwise strong rookie season, Stephon Castle hit somewhat of a low point in the 112-110 loss at Minnesota on Sunday when he failed to score and had just one assist and four turnovers in only eight minutes.

But true to form, the rookie bounced back against the Clippers, scoring 15 points on 5-for-8 from the field in 23 minutes. He also had four assists and only one turnover.

“I thought it was a very mature response to what happened in Minnesota, so I thought he looked great. … very happy with his response to seven minutes in a rough patch in Minnesota,” Mitch Johnson said. “Not surprised but very pleased.”

Image\

Castle said his rebound performance was all about “having a short memory, whether it’s a good game or a bad game.”

“Sometimes it’s not going to be your night,” the fourth overall pick said. “Sometimes you’re going to play, sometimes you’re not. But staying ready is a skill. You have got to have it in the NBA.”
