Wembanyama pushed to limit in dramatic comeback win over Clippers

San Antonio Spurs players Victor Wembanyama, center, De’Aaron Fox (4) and Keldon Johnson celebrate their win after an NBA basketball game against the Los Angeles Clippers, Friday, March 6, 2026, in San Antonio.
Victor Wembanyama raised his arms high in triumph before taking a few steps and collapsing onto teammate De’Aaron Fox after the final buzzer sounded in the Spurs’ thrilling 116-112 come-from-behind win over the Los Angeles Clippers.
“I thought I was about to pass out from the first quarter from exhaustion,” Wembanyama told ESPN in an emotional on-court interview. “That’s close to being the hardest game of my life.”
Talking to reporters a short time later, he said he was spent after pushing himself to the limit.
“How fatigued am I? I got zero left right now, so I’m glad it didn’t go into overtime," Wembanyama said.
But as exhausted as the 22-year-old Frenchman was, he also felt exhilarated after experiencing what he called “definitely the best 30 hours of basketball, the best 30 hours of my life.”
It all began with a satisfying 121-106 wire-to-wire victory over Detroit on Thursday night — the Spurs’ second win over the physical Eastern Conference leaders in 11 days — in which he had 38 points, 16 rebounds and five blocks in 39 minutes, the most since he logged 40 early in the season.
Then came Friday night’s drama against the always-tough Kawhi Leonard and the surging Clippers.
“That was one of the best games I’ve ever been a part of in my life,” he said.
Wembanyama had 27 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks in just 22 minutes, Julian Champagnie hit five 3s to finish with 20 points after almost sitting the game out due to a sore knee, and the Spurs rallied from a 25-point deficit to record their second biggest comeback since the play-by-play era began in 1996, falling just short of their 28-point rally over Sacramento on March 8, 2017.
“I’d say that’s a lot of character, a lot of character,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said.
De’Aaron Fox scored 10 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter and had a team-high nine assists for the Spurs, who improved to 46-17 after winning their third in a row and 14th in the last 15.
The Spurs withstood a 30-point, nine-rebound outing by Leonard against his former team. Brook Lopez added 26 points for Los Angeles, which fell to 30-32 and had a three-game winning streak snapped.
The Spurs trailed 75-50 in the third quarter, but they opened the fourth with a fast-paced 18-5 run to grab their first lead since midway through the first quarter. They went on to outscore the Clippers 35-20 in the final frame while the sellout crowd of 18,711 went wild.
“It was so loud, you couldn’t hear anything,” Champagnie said. “We couldn’t hear anything. We told ourselves, ‘It’s loud in here. We got to communicate. We got to figure something out.’ So, shout out to (the fans) for real.”
The Spurs went ahead for good 113-112 with 16 seconds left on a breakaway dunk by Wembanyama after he hauled in a long, sharp pass from Fox. The play began with Wembanyama defending Leonard on a straight-on 3-point attempt that bounced off the front of the rim into the hands of Fox, who quickly found the 7-foot-4 center as he sprinted toward the basket.
“That was perfect,” Wembanyama said of Fox’s pinpoint pass, which found its target in stride. “I didn’t even ask for it because I didn’t have time.”
The Spurs got a break when Nicolas Batum turned the ball over on the ensuing possession in an odd sequence. He inbounded the ball to Lopez, who passed it back to Batum while he was still standing out of bounds, a mistake that prompted Los Angeles coach Ty Lue to slam his hand down on the scorer’s table.
The Spurs secured the win when Stephon Castle rebounded his missed free throw and then darted between Leonard and Lopez to score on a layup with 1.4 seconds left.
Castle’s putback was the only field goal in the final 3:28 Fox didn’t have a hand in. The two-time All-Star either scored or assisted on the previous four buckets in that span to finish the fourth with 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting, six assists (without a turnover) and a plus-15 rating while playing all 12 minutes.
“He took over the game just in terms of how he was kind of managing and dictating it,” Johnson said. “We played fast. At times, we had to slow down just to get organized. He got everybody in the right spots. We had the matchups we were trying to get to, and he was a monster at that. He ran the whole fourth.”
The Spurs also got five big points from Carter Bryant in the fourth quarter via a lob dunk set up by Castle with 7:44 left that pulled the Spurs within 97-96 and a 3 with 3:28 remaining set up by Fox that gave the Spurs a 106-103 lead. In nine minutes in the quarter, Bryant also had two steals and finished with a plus-14 rating.
“He’s grown up a lot. That’s not a rookie any more,” Champagnie said.

San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama (1) drives against Los Angeles Clippers’ Derrick Jones Jr., second from right, and Kawhi Leonard (2) during the first half of an NBA basketball game, Friday, March 6, 2026, in San Antonio.
And the Spurs are a far cry from the team that finished last season 34-48 to miss the playoffs for a sixth straight year.
“To me, it’s very meaningful, that win,” Wembanyama said. "It’s not a game I see us winning two years ago (when they finished 22-60), for sure. It’s actually a game I see us losing by 30 or 40 two years ago.
“…We were down 25 and nobody gave up. I had limited minutes. The starters had limited minutes. And everybody that set foot on the court helped one way or another. And the best thing I see is nobody gives up on anything or anybody. Everybody’s got everybody’s back. And that’s why I have (full) trust in these guys. I love them so much. It’s such a pleasure to play with them, to share the court, and just to see them every day.”
But as much as he loves his teammates, Wembanyama was grateful to be away from them Saturday, a much-needed day of rest before facing the Houston Rockets (39-23) Sunday night in another nationally televised game and the halfway point in a season-long six-game homestand at the Frost Bank Center, where the Spurs are 23-6 and have won seven straight.
“I’ll get a good night’s sleep,” Wembanyama said. “The good thing is I didn’t get any super sore point in my body, so I don’t have anything specific that needs to recover. … I’m healthy. And two good nights’ sleep, that’s going to be good enough. And then some good recovery, massage, whatever. … These days I recover really quickly.”
One thing is certain: His rest should be peaceful knowing he left it all out on the court the last two games.
“My favorite part,” Wembanyama said, “is we faced some very different trials over these past two games, and I’ve been able to answer the call every single on of them.”
