3 takeaways as Wembanyama gets chippy in Spurs’ loss to Clippers
San Antonio Spurs acting head coach Mitch Johnson argues for a call with official Jason Goldenberg (35) during the second half of their NBA game with the Los Angeles Clippers at the Frost Bank Center on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2025 in San Antonio. The Clippers beat the Spurs 128-116.
With a road heavy schedule ahead of them, the Spurs placed a lot of emphasis on putting together a successful three-game homestand.
It did not get off to a good start.
Kawhi Leonard scored a career-high 27 points against his former team and four of his fellow starters had 21 or more points. including Norman Powell with 27 of his own, as the Clippers downed the Spurs 128-116 Wednesday night.
It was the Spurs’ fifth home loss in a row, including one in Paris against Indiana. All five were by double digits. According to ESPN, that’s a franchise record for the longest double-digit home losing streak, eclipsing a four-game double-digit skid in November 1996.
The Spurs, who are 20-24 overall and 12-12 at home, have lost eight of their last 10. After hosting Milwaukee on Friday and Miami on Saturday, they won’t play at the Frost Bank Center again until March 2 when Oklahoma City comes to town.
“I think this is in the way back from our toughest point in the season, and I think we made some efforts tonight to get out of it, so I think we’re on the right way,” Victor Wembanyama said. “I hate losing. Losing feels awful, but winning feels so great. So, let’s not forget that. It’s easy to forget about winning, but it’s right there. So we’ll get back to it.”
Wembanyama led the Spurs with 23 points to go along with 12 rebounds, four assists and three blocks. Stephon Castle and Devin Vassell had 20 and 19 points, respectively.
After trailing by 16 with about seven minutes left in the third quarter, the Spurs entered the final frame down 94-92 after outscoring the Clippers 32-29 in the third. But Los Angeles outscored the Spurs 34-24 in the fourth on the strength of 70% shooting from the floor (14 of 20) while holding the Spurs to 37.5% (9 of 24).
James Harden finished with 21 points for the Clippers, who improved to 27-20. Ivica Zubac had 21 points and a season-best 22 rebounds as Los Angeles finished with a 57-30 rebounding edge and a 22-7 lead in second-chance points.
“Anytime you get out-rebounded by that margin, there’s obviously some possessions left on the table where you needed a few more guys to participate, whether that’s when we were a little bit smaller or Victor’s trying to make plays defensively,” acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “That’s when guys got to get grab backs and participate in gang rebounding as a group.”
Here are three takeaways from a game that featured 13 lead changes and seven ties:
Wembanyama reached his boiling point
After absorbing a blindside hit by Zubac late in the third quarter, Wembanyama started to go after the 7-foot, 240-pound center. Had it not been for his teammates and team security staffers holding him back, the Frenchman might have taken a swing at the Croatian.
“Frustration. It was a bunch of things,” Wembanyama said when asked about the incident, which began after he blocked a shot by Zubac, who complained to the refs that he had been fouled.
Part of Wembanyama’s frustration is that ever since he entered the league as the No. 1 overall pick last season, he’s faced physical play from opponents. Asked if he gets treated fairly by the refs in those situations, Wembanyama replied, “No.”
“It’s probably surprising he hasn’t reacted like that earlier, to be honest,” Johnson said. “Not to go into detail, but he gets a lot of contact and, at some point, he’s going to have to continue to protect himself if other people or the people controlling the game supposedly are not going to do that.”
Wembanyama said he would rather not lobby the refs for protection because he said “it’s not my job to do politics.”
Zubac said he apologized to Wembanyama before they left the court.

“I thought I got fouled," Zubac said. "I was mad at the refs. So, then I was late (on Harrison Barnes’ 3-point shot). I saw it going up. I saw Wemby crashing, so I knew I had to box him out. I bumped him a little harder. I let emotions take over a little bit, but I apologized to him. That’s not the way I want to be on the court and compete.”
For his part, Wembanyama said he had no hard feelings toward Zubac.
“He’s not that kind of player…It was just frustration. He’s a nice guy,” Wembanyama said.
The same is true of the Spurs’ franchise player, but everyone has their limit.
Spurs’ roster deficiencies are hurting them
With backup big men Zach Collins and Charles Bassey glued to the bench the entire game, the Spurs were forced to play small with either Jeremy Sochan or Harrison Barnes at center when Wembanyama was out of the game.
The result was Zubac gobbled up boards with a passion, including nine on the offensive end.
“I mean, logically you would think that would be part of it,” Johnson said. “I think that (rebounding) margin is probably a lot more a reflection of everybody else than just Jeremy by himself, but for sure that is a fair point to bring up with the lineups.”
Unless the Spurs make a move for a backup big before the Feb. 6 trade deadline, they’ll have to live with their lack of frontcourt depth.
“We got to rebound as a team and try to get in there and help out,” Chris Paul said.
Leonard is giving the Clippers a big lift
The Spurs faced Leonard for the first time this season after he missed the first two outings, which the teams split, due to his right knee issue.
Wednesday served as a reminder of how good he can be when healthy.
Los Angeles Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard (2) drives on San Antonio Spurs guard Chris Paul (3) during the first half of their NBA game at the Frost Bank Center on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2025 in San Antonio. The Clippers beat the Spurs 128-116.
In addition to scoring 27 points on 11-for-19 shooting from the field, including 2 for 4 from 3-point range, he had seven assists, six rebounds and one block in 29 minutes.
After Leonard missed the first 34 games of the season, the Clippers are 7-2 when he’s in the lineup.
“He is an imposing player that can impact the game in many ways, and he gives a different element to that team just from a physicality, versatility, adult standpoint where you can make some plays just off sheer physicality.” Johnson said.
