Victor Wembanyama posted his third career game of at least 40 points Thursday night, helped shepherd the Spurs to a 133-126 overtime victory over Atlanta and produced another viral moment when he bounced an alley-oop off the backboard to himself in the second half.

For the Spurs’ sophomore sensation, however, the best part of his week came before any of that happened.

A little less than an hour before tipoff against the Hawks, the Spurs announced every player on the roster would be available for the first time this season.

“It was the best feeling,” Wembanyama said. “It was great to see everybody.”

The Spurs’ era of good feelings began with a stirring 133-126 overtime win over Atlanta at the Frost Bank Center.

For acting coach Mitch Johnson, the team’s clean bill of health created a “good problem to have” sort of scenario.

Tasked with reconfiguring his rotation around 15 available players, Johnson made the brilliant basketball decision to leave Wembanyama right where he was.

The Spurs’ starting center rewarded Johnson with 42 points, seven 3-pointers and four blocked shots.

Spurs vs. Trail Blazers: How to watch the game, notable stats, player news

“I thought he imposed his will in a positive way,” Johnson said of the 7-foot-3 Wembanyama.

With Keldon Johnson, Tre Jones, and Zach Collins coming off the injured list at once, Mitch Johnson’s other decisions were a bit more nuanced.

Devin Vassell drew his first start of the season, nudging Julian Champagnie to the second unit, and equaled a season high with 23 points.

Before Thursday, the Spurs’ starting five of Vassell, Wembanyama, Chris Paul, Harrison Barnes and Jeremy Sochan had totaled seven minutes on the floor together.

They played together 13 minutes against the Hawks, and posted a stellar net rating of plus-32.8 in that span.

“It felt great to have the whole team for the first time this whole season,” Vassell said. “Whether you played two minutes or 48 minutes, it didn’t matter. Everybody contributed.”

In deploying that fivesome, Johnson at last was able to use the starting unit the coaching staff mostly envisioned during the summer, before the injury bug took hold.

“It wasn’t a foregone conclusion,” Johnson said, “but I would say that was the house favorite at the casino for sure.”

Not everything was pretty about the Spurs’ full-strength victory over Atlanta.

Using combinations previously unseen, Johnson expected the Spurs to have a few moments of growing pains Thursday and was not disappointed.

The Spurs committed 17 turnovers, good for 28 points for the Hawks. Atlanta was even more generous, giving away 23 turnovers that led to 35 points for the Spurs.

“I thought the low lights or rough patches were more decision-based and not effort-based,” Johnson said. “We can live with some of that stuff.”

The Spurs will aim to keep the good times and good health rolling Saturday when the Portland Trail Blazers visit the Frost Bank Center.

A victory would push the Spurs, now 14-13, two games over .500 for the first time since Dec. 1.

The Spurs have already defeated the Blazers (9-18) twice this season, including 118-116 victory at Portland’s Moda Center last Friday in which they overcame a 17-point deficit in the fourth quarter.

“We just want to keep trying to stack wins and not be satisfied with this,” point guard Chris Paul said.

Paul nearly ruined the Spurs’ first night of perfect health before it was over Thursday.

Late in the overtime period against Atlanta, the 39-year-old had to briefly come out of the game after banging his right hand. Paul likened the tingling nerve sensation running down his shooting arm to what happens when a person takes a blow to the funny bone.

At an ensuing timeout, Paul was seen testing his arm by flipping a ball to himself.

“I was throwing the ball in the air, just making sure if they fouled I’d be able to shoot free throws,” Paul said.

After a brief respite to recover, Paul returned to the floor with 38.1 seconds left in overtime and immediately put the game on ice.

Paul’s top-of-the-arc 3-pointer – launched from a right arm he could hardly feel – put the Spurs ahead by seven with 19.5 seconds to go.

“Hitting that three was the best way to tell us he’s fine,” Wembanyama said.

True to form, Wembanyama did not let Thursday pass without supplying a few highlight-reel moments of his own.

One came midway though the fourth quarter, as Wembanyama faced a rapidly draining shot clock.

Seemingly caged in by the Hawks’ defense in the paint, Wembanyama improvised, scooping the ball off the glass to himself then dunking it home just before the 24-second clock expired.

The play tied the score at 101 with 5:56 left in regulation, setting the stage for a down-to-the-wire finish.

“Just about every night he does something that’s like, ‘Damn, that’s why they talk about him all the time,’ ” Paul said.

Indeed, Wembanyama’s antics still seem to surprise even his teammates.

By crashing the glass for what he believed to be a rebound, Champagnie found himself unwittingly on Wembanyama’s dunk poster.

“It happens,” Wembanyama said with a grin.

Good health willing, the heretofore snakebitten Spurs are poised for more glad tidings to come.

Knock on hardwood.

“We know everybody is going to get their chance and there is no unselfish player here,” Wembanyama said. “So we’re going to have a lot of fun together.”
