Wembanyama, Spurs defeat Hawks in overtime

For Devin Vassell, the sense of déjà vu was palpable if not foreboding.
The Spurs were locked in a tight game, at home, against Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks.
What the Spurs could not pull off last season, they did Thursday, responding to some tough moments with enough spectacular ones of their own to pull off a 133-126 victory in overtime.
“That was the first thing that everybody said in the locker room, this is a change from the past two years,” Vassell said. “We’re able to come out with these wins and just get settled down in the big moments.”
Victor Wembanyama scored 42 points, made seven 3-pointers and blocked four shots to lead the Spurs’ charge.
It was his third career game with at least 40 points. The Spurs also got 23 points from Vassell in his first start of the season, along with 20 from Jeremy Sochan.
De’Andre Hunter had 27 points off the bench to pace Atlanta, which also benefited from 23 points and 16 assists from Young.
A season ago, the Hawks won another game that went down to the wire in their lone trip to San Antonio, claiming a 137-135 decision thanks to Young’s 45-point outburst.
This time, it was the Spurs’ turn.
The teams traded big shot after big shot down the stretch of the fourth quarter and overtime, with Chris Paul hitting the biggest ones for the Spurs.
His 4-point play over Larry Nance Jr. gave the Spurs a 119-118 lead with 56.5 left in regulation and helped get the game to overtime.
His third 3-pointer of the night, with 19.5 left in the extra frame, put the Spurs ahead by seven and sealed the win.
“I’m sure if you went back and tracked it,” Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson said, “he’s got a few of those.”
Here are three takeaways from Thursday’s victory, which pushed the Spurs back over .500 at 14-13:
1. CP3 showed toughness, both mental and physical
The past week has not been the best of Paul’s short career with the Spurs.
He got ejected in the first quarter of the Spurs’ victory at Portland on Friday, then went scoreless for only the seventh time in his 20-season career in Saturday’s home loss to Minnesota.
When Paul went without a point in the first half Thursday, it marked nine consecutive quarters without touching the scoring column.
Paul broke his drought with a short jumper 27 seconds into the third quarter, and would become instrumental in bringing the game home for the Spurs.
With 56.5 seconds remaining in regulation, Paul buried a 3-pointer and drew a foul on Nance. The ensuing free throw put the Spurs ahead by one.
“I just try to pick my spots,” Paul said. “When they’re towards the end and winning time, that’s the funnest part of the game.”
Paul saved more heroics for overtime.

Late in the extra period, Paul went to the sideline after taking a shot to his hand that left his entire arm tingling.
“When we came out of that timeout, I was throwing the ball in the air, just making sure if they fouled I’d be able to shoot free throws,” Paul said.
He ended up taking a longer shot than that.
He returned in time to hit the final biggest shot of the game, a top-of-the-arc 3-pointer that essentially salted away the win.
Paul finished with 12 points, eight assists and seven rebounds – one more than Wembanyama – and made all four of his shot attempts. He also logged four steals.
Not a bad bounce back for a player who didn’t necessarily need it.
2. Mitch Johnson has some decisions to make
For the first time this season, the Spurs entered a game with every member of the roster healthy and available.
“It was the best feeling,” Wembanyama said. “We know everybody is going to get their chance and there is no unselfish player here, so we’re going to have a lot of fun together.”
A full roster created some of those “good problems to have” for Johnson.
The first change Johnson made with his entire arsenal on hand was to move Vassell into the starting lineup for the first time this season, replacing Julian Champagnie.
The starting five of Paul, Vassell, Sochan, Harrison Barnes and Wembanyama was the one the Spurs would have preferred to use to open the season, had Vassell not started things off of the injured list.
In the first half Thursday, Johnson used Charles Bassey as Wembanyama’s primary backup at center. When that didn’t go exceedingly well, Johnson deployed Sochan as a small-ball five.
Zach Collins did not play, despite being ruled available for the first time since bruising his back Dec. 8.
With Tre Jones back, neither Malaki Branham or Blake Wesley played at all.
Though the goal will be to eventually develop a steady night-to-night rotation, Johnson has indicated to the team that things could remain in some state of flux for the time being.
“Mitch said something great in the locker room about we don’t have to save nothing,” Paul said. “We got so many bodies we can just rotate guys in or whatnot.”
As long as everyone stays healthy, figuring out the minutes will be a good problem for the Spurs to have.
3. The Spurs at least kept Young under 40
No opposing player tormented the Spurs last season more than Young. In two games against San Antonio, the Hawks All-Star averaged 40.5 points and 13.5 assists.
By comparison, the Spurs essentially kept Young under wraps Thursday.
Credit goes mostly to Sochan, who bird-dogged Young all over the Frost Bank Center court.
Some of Young’s quote-unquote quiet night hearkens to a shift in his approach this season.
Coming into Thursday, he was scoring at his lowest clip since his rookie season (21.5 points per game), while leading the NBA in assists at 12.1 per game.
Young’s inclination to get teammates involved has been good for the Hawks, who have hovered around .500 lately and played their way to the NBA Cup Final Four.
The Spurs, meanwhile, will take him not scorching them for 40.
