Victor Wembanyama made Chauncey Billups look good.
Meeting with reporters before the Spurs’ 118-116 win Friday at Portland, the Trail Blazers coach gave a detailed rundown on what areas he thinks the 7-foot-3 center has improved in during his sophomore season.
One skill that stands out to Billups: His growth as a playmaker.
“You can tell he knows his players very well,” Billups said. “He can just kind of drive it and just throw it knowing that a guy’s going to be cutting. He’s gotten familiar with coverages, with how people play him.”
As if on cue, the 20-year-old native of France underscored the accuracy of Billups’ scouting report by amassing seven assists to go along with his club-best 28 points in the Spurs’ come-from-behind win.
It was the fifth time this season Wembanyama has finished with seven or more assists. He had a career-high 11 in the 127-125 win over Sacramento on Dec. 1 as part of a 34-point, 14-rebound triple-double and was averaging 3.9 after Sunday night’s 106-92 loss to Minnesota, which ties him for second on the team with rookie Stephon Castle.
Only Chris Paul (8.4) has a better average among the Spurs. Wembanyama has led the team in assists three times this season, ranking second on the club behind Paul’s 17.
Although statistically Wembanyama is averaging about the same number of assists as he did last season, it’s clear he has, as Billups pointed out, a better understanding of the offense, the strengths and weaknesses of his teammates, and of how teams are defending him.
And he remains a willing passer.
“I get a lot of satisfaction because it’s a step in my career I’m currently in,” Wembanyama said of his playmaking. “Before coming in the league, I never really had 10 assists or more in a game and rarely had seven plus, so it’s in my development and a step I’m willing to take because I’m trying to force teams to guard me with more than one player. Mathematically, it means one of the guys is open. This is the best way to win games, involving everybody.”
Indeed, Wembanyama made some of his best passes in Portland to reserve guard Blake Wesley, whose playing time increased after Paul was ejected late in the first period for complaining about the officiating. The Spurs entered the game already thin at the point, with Tre Jones on the bench in street clothes because of a bum shoulder that has sidelined him since Dec. 3.
One of Wembanyama’s sharpest passes came with the score tied 62-62 midway through the third period. Guarded tightly by Jerami Grant at the top of the key, Wembanyama hit Wesley with a sharp bounce pass on a pick and roll that resulted in an uncontested layup.
Wembanyama had several other passes against the Trail Blazers that triggered sequences that led to other easy buckets. One such “hockey assist” came early in the third quarter when he sped past Grant into the paint after a pump fake got the 6-7 forward off his feet. Once in the lane, Wembanayama hit Wesley with a left-handed behind-the-back pass the guard turned into an assist when he found Harrison Barnes in the corner for a open 3 that gave the Spurs a 55-47 lead.
“The game is just slowing down for him,” Barnes said of Wembanyama. “He’s a willing passer. He has great court vision. Obviously, he’s the number one (scoring threat) on the scouting reports and teams are going to throw a lot of different schemes and a lot of different bodies at him. But he’s going to make the right read nine out of ten times.”
Wembanyama’s facilitating out of double teams will only get better with time, acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson believes.
“We’re continuing to learn how to play off him and put him in spots to take advantage of situations,” Johnson said.
In the preseason, Wembanyama said it would be a “good mark of improvement” for him to average more than 4.0 assists this season.
“I have to be a playmaker,” he said. “I have to facilitate for my teammates.”
From Billings’ viewpoint, Wembanyama is doing a pretty good job of that, so much so he questions why Wembanyama should be labeled a center any more.
“I don’t know what I consider him," Billups said. “He can play them all, he can guard them all. He’s a special, special player…A unique talent.”
