布朗(P.J. Brown)。

SAN ANTONIO, TX - DECEMBER 8: Chris Paul #3 of the San Antonio Spurs acknowledges the crowd after his assist surpassed Jason Kidd during the game against the New Orleans Pelicans in the first half at Frost Bank Center on December 8, 2024 in San Antonio, Texas.

Chris Paul threw the most nondescript inbounds pass to Victor Wembanyama midway through the second quarter Sunday.

When Wembanyama swished a deep 3-pointer, it made NBA history.

The assist was Paul’s third of the game against New Orleans, and the 12,092nd of his career.

That put him past Jason Kidd for second place all-time on the league’s all-time assist list.

At the next timeout, as the Frost Bank Center erupted in applause at Paul’s accomplishment, the 39-year-old point guard was too busy to take in the moment.

“We were losing,” Paul said after the Spurs’ 121-116 victory. “So I was talking in the huddle.”

Victor Wembanyama had 25 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks while rookie Stephon Castle chipped in 22 points as the Spurs snapped a three-game losing skid by holding off the injury-riddled Pelicans.

Wembanyama was playing in his first game back after missing two with a sore back. He exited the game three minutes in, clutching at his back again.

That began a revolving door of ins and outs for the Spurs

Three minutes later, Zach Collins – Wembanyama’s replacement – also left the game holding his back after taking a frightening fall going for a Yves Messi pump-fake.

A minute and 15 seconds into the second quarter, Castle left the game holding his left shoulder after hurting it in a loose-ball scrum.

With 9:34 left in the second quarter, Wembanyama returned to the game to a thunderous ovation.

With 7:11 to play in the half, Keldon Johnson limped off with what the team later called a left calf strain.

On Johnson’s way to the locker room, he passed Castle in the hallway headed back to the court.

Collins and Johnson would miss the rest of the game.

“That’s a character win,” Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson said. “We had a lot of guys that have been in and out and they pulled to gether.”

The Spurs led by 11 with 5:02 to play before falling apart.

When C.J. McCollum wiggled for a layup with one minute to go, it gave the Pelicans their first lead of the second half.

Wembanyama’s answered with a deep 3-pointer with 36.3 seconds left, saving the game for the Spurs.

Paul finished with six points, but added 10 assists to his career ledger. He has 12,099 now.

John Stockton’s record of 15,806 is far out of reach, even for Paul.

The Spurs’ celebrated in the locker room as if Paul had set the record. That had to be enough, and it was.

“It was cool,” Paul said. “It’s a lot better since we won.”

Here are three takeaways from a milestone night at the Frost Bank Center:

1. Wembanyama saves Paul’s big night

Battling through a back injury, Wembanyama was good – but not often transcendent – for much of Sunday night.

When the game was on the line, however, he made the game’s biggest shot.

Wembanyama had not scored in the fourth quarter when he lined up a 30-footer at the top of the key with 36.9 seconds remaining.

The resulting swish was heard ‘round the Frost Bank Center.

Wembanyama’s 3-pointer took the Spurs from two points down to one point ahead.

It was a look Johnson might not have preferred his star to take in that moment, except for one detail.

“I’m glad it went in,” Johnson said.

Wembanyama’s go-ahead 3-pointer was set up by an official challenge New Orleans won.

Initially on that possession, referees whistled Dejounte Murray for a foul on a driving Julian Champagnie. Replays showed no foul occurred, and when officials could not determine possession on the ensuing out-of-bounds call, the proceedings went to a jump ball.

Wembanyama won that tip, then won the game.

“I don’t ever doubt Victor in those moments,” Johnson said.

2. Raise a glass to CP3

Johnson said he was honored to be in the building for Paul’s milestone. So was his counterpart in New Orleans.

Willie Green played three seasons with Paul in New Orleans and the Los Angeles Clippers.

“He’s like a brother to me,” Green said.

Though Paul’s first step has slowed a beat, Green still sees occasionally sees flashes of the prime version of the point guard when he watches the Spurs.

“His mind is still working like he’s 20,” Green said. “He’s processing the game, helping young guys. You can see the team’s growth since he’s gotten here.”

Paul’s longevity helped him reach Kidd.

His 12,092nd assist came to Wembanyama, who is 20.

Paul’s first career assist, with the then-New Orleans Hornets in 2005, came on a post-up pass to P.J. Brown.

Brown is now 55 years old.

“Older than my dad,” Wembanyama said.

Wembanyama said he has grown to admire Paul’s “purposeful” approach to his craft.

“It’s a trait that you find in all these players, those greats that stick around for years and years,” Wembanyama said. “They’re not here just to be here.”

3. Bassey’s minutes were big

With the Spurs’ big man corps ravaged, the Spurs needed someone taller than 6-8 to step in and do something.

Enter Charles Bassey, who was suddenly all over place.

The 24-year-old made the most of his 18 minutes, equaling a career high with 16 points, pulling in 11 rebounds and swatting four shots.

“He played the role that we need him to in terms of energy, activity, physicality, athleticism,” Johnson said. “When he does that, the basketball finds him and he makes plays on both ends.”

Bassey made his first five shots, and had a chance to surpass his career scoring high.

He missed three short attempts on one possession of the fourth quarter that would have put him over.

Still, the Spurs don’t win Sunday without Bassey’s contributions. He will be as important going forward if the Spurs don’t start getting healthier in the frontcourt.

“Of course every player wants to play man,” Bassey said. “But we don’t pick the lineups. We just got to come ready to play every game, because you never know what’s going happen.”
