San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama (1) goes to the basket against New Orleans Pelicans’ Yves Missi during the first half of an NBA basketball game, Sunday, Dec. 8, 2024, in San Antonio.

After their 121-116 win over New Orleans on Sunday, the Spurs don’t play again until Friday at Portland.

Mitch Johnson normally would not be happy with such a lengthy break in the schedule.

“I always hate when we have more than two days off in a season,” the acting Spurs coach said. “I think it messes up your rhythm. It doesn’t seem like there’s a place for it.”

But given the Spurs’ health coming out of its hard-fought win over the scrappy Pelicans, Johnson counts the hiatus as a blessing.

“I cannot think of a better time than right now,” he said.

Wembanyama gave the Spurs a scare when he went to the locker room just 3 minutes into the contest for some treatment on his back, but he returned with 9:34 left in the second quarter to finish with 25 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks in 26 minutes.

Wembanyama said it was uncertain whether he would return when he left the court. The 7-foot-3 center signaled for a timeout and grabbed his lower back shortly after he landed awkwardly following an offensive rebound.

“Just had to spend a lot of time back there trying to get me back in playing shape or make sure everything is warm,” Wembanyama said.

The Spurs ruled out Collins with a lower back injury after he fell hard with 5:56 left in the first period while defending Yves Missi. Collins, who was called for a foul on the play, needed several seconds to get up before he walked to the locker room without assistance.

Collins had two points and three rebounds in 3 minutes.

The Spurs ruled Keldon Johnson out with a left calf strain after he left the game with 7:11 left in the second quarter. He finished with eight points and matched his season high with four assists in 11 minutes.

“They thought (Keldon Johnson’s injury) might’ve been a cramp and then it was maybe more, maybe his calf,” Mitch Johnson said. “And Zach, a pretty scary fall. It’s going to be really, really sore. So, we’ll take these next whatever many days we have (off).”

Spurs rookie Stephon Castle also made a trip to the locker room in the first half after he collided with the Pelicans’ Jeremiah Robinson-Earl during a scramble for a loose ball. After being fitted with a pad to protect his left shoulder, the 20-year-old guard returned to finish with 22 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Bassey fills in nicely for Collins

Charles Bassey rose to the occasion after he entered the game for the first time with 4:20 left in the first half and both Wembanyama and Collins in the locker room.

Filling in for Collins at backup center, the 6-foot-11 fourth-year pro matched his career high with 16 points to go along with a season-high 11 rebounds and four blocks in 18 minutes.

“He played the role we need him to in terms of energy, activity, physicality, athleticism,” Mitch Johnson said.

Bassey said the next-man-up mentality served him well.

“You never know what’s going to happen, so that’s the mentality I take to every game, regardless of whether I play or not,” he said.

Bassey finished the first half with 10 points on 4 for 4, four rebounds and three blocks.

“When I came back, I saw Bassey just grabbing as many rebounds as he could and being aggressive,” Wembanyama said. “It was good to see him go to work like that.”

Team supports Collins after meltdown

Mitch Johnson suggested that, with the Spurs shorthanded, Collins should have shown better judgement before getting into a beef with referee Michael Smith in Friday’s 140-113 loss to Sacramento.

Smith ejected Collins after he disputed his third foul, which occurred while defending Domantas Sabonis. After Smith tossed Collins, the sixth-year pro directed an obscene gesture at the official that cost him $35,000 after the NBA fined him Saturday.

Collins’ ejection came in a game the Spurs entered shorthanded with Wembanyama, Devin Vassell (injury management) and Tre Jones (shoulder) all out.

“We need everybody,” Mitch Johnson said. “But that being said, we support him, we stay together. We all do things that we may want to handle differently and it was a moment I think he wished he could have back.”

In his return Sunday, Vassell scored seven points on an inefficient 3 of 11 (0 of 4 from 3-point range) to go along with four rebounds and four assists in 28 minutes.
