(Victor Wembanyama)
(Chris Paul)
(Harrison Barnes)
(Julian Champagnie)
评分:A-
(Keldon Johnson)
(Devin Vassell)
(Zach Collins)
(Blake Wesley)
(Malaki Branham)
(Sandro Mamukelashvili)
(Mitch Johnson)

Grades: San Antonio Spurs vs. Los Angeles Lakers – Game #13
In an entertaining, back-and-forth affair, the San Antonio Spurs gave it their all but ultimately lost to the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday night by a final count of 120-115. The loss dropped the Spurs to 6-7, while the win improved the Lakers to 8-4.
San Antonio and Los Angeles traded runs all night long. In the fourth quarter, the two teams hit big shot after big shot. Rookie Stephon Castle put the Spurs ahead by a point with 1:44 remaining. Unfortunately, the Spurs never scored again as the Lakers executed well enough down the stretch to get the win.
Net-net, the Spurs should be reasonably happy with how they played. There’s clearly room to improve on both ends but there’s no reason to hang their heads after this one.
Stats: Spurs vs. Lakers
Spurs vs. Lakers – Final Grades
Victor Wembanyama
The good: Wembanyama unquestionably played hard. He hit four three-pointers and was also 8-for-12 from two-point range. He rebounded really well and authored a handful of heady passes. The bad: Wembanyama simply lacked fiber. He had no free throw attempts in 34 minutes and Anthony Davis scored 40 points for the Lakers. A little more sturdiness would have gone a long way. Wembanyama was also too careless with the ball and his rim protection wasn’t as dominant as usual. Overall: It’s difficult to be too upset with how the super sophomore played but he could have played smarter and tougher.
Grade: B-
Chris Paul
Paul had 11 points and 11 assists in 29 minutes. He was very efficient on the offensive end, though I would say his passing was less precise than usual. His play in the fourth could have also been sharper. Defensively, Paul held up pretty well. The Lakers were attacking him on switches but he was able to disrupt those possessions more often than not.
Grade: B-
Harrison Barnes
Barnes was really quiet on the offensive end. He only shot three times but, to his credit, he did score eight points despite limited touches. Defensively, Barnes was mostly good. He had a couple of slow switches but otherwise he was a doing his job on that end.
Grade: B
Julian Champagnie
Champagnie hit a pair of three-pointers and also had a couple of impressive drives to the rack. His off the dribble game is getting better and better — as is his passing. That said, Champagnie hesitated too often on jumpers. Even if he is missing, he has to let them fly. Defensively, I liked what I saw of him in one-on-one situations. He’s slowly but surely becoming a competent defender.
Grade: B-
Stephon Castle
Dang, man, this rookie is impressive. Sure, Castle had some rookie mistakes in the fourth quarter on both sides of the ball — but, all in all, he was pretty awesome against the Lakers. He had some outstanding passes, he hit 3-of-4 from deep, he drove to the hoop with vigor, he was calm under pressure, he limited his mistakes and he was a pest on defense. Castle wasn’t perfect but he gave it his all and hooped with confidence. Rook looks like a good one.
Grade: A-
Keldon Johnson
It just wasn’t a memorable outing for Johnson. He had a handful of calamitous defensive breakdowns. Usually the effort was there on defense but the miscues piled up. Offensively, his hard-headed drives to the rim paid dividends but Johnson’s tunnel vision can sometimes hold the team back when he’s on the court.
Grade: C-
Devin Vassell
Vassell did a lot of positive things. His passing was better than we’ve seen since his return. He finished with five assists and no turnovers in 22 minutes. Scoring-wise, he was solid. He scored 15 points even though he missed a few wide open jumpers. His decision-making on offense could have been better. Specifically, he needlessly forced shots too often. Vassell’s defense wasn’t good. That has been the last aspect of his game to return following his offseason foot surgery.
Grade: B
Zach Collins
Collins was decent. His rebounding could have been better, his defense in the lane was nothing to write home about and he strangely seemed to lack coordination tonight. On the other hand, Collins hit all three of his field goal attempts, passed the ball well and hustled on both ends.
Grade: B-
Blake Wesley
Yikes, bad showing for Wesley. He forced shots and ended up 0-for-4 in eight minutes. His playmaking was minimal, his defense was missing in action and he could usually be found running around without a plan. Wesley has to be better than this to win a spot in the rotation.
Grade: D
Malaki Branham
Branham wasn’t a whole lot better than Wesley. He hit a three-pointer but his defense was even worse and his ball-handling was a struggle.
Grade: C-
Sandro Mamukelashvili
Mamukelashvili got six minutes but failed to make a tangible impact on the game.
Grade: C-
Mitch Johnson
I thought Johnson did well enough. The defensive gameplan was adequate. His play-calling got Wembanyama involved early and often. Conversely, Johnson could have tightened up his rotation; going 11 deep didn’t make much sense. He also has to figure out how to use KJ and Vassell in ways that don’t interrupt the team’s rhythm.
