— Paul Garcia (@ PaulGarciaNBA) 2024

(Nikola Vucevic)
(Gradey Dick)
(Cam Thomas)
(Victor Wembanyama)
(Jordan Hawkins)

pic.twitter.com/LdTudkBX1C

Despite a slow shooting start, Victor Wembanyama isn’t worried

San Antonio Spurs v Los Angeles Clippers

Wemby isn’t fazed by his slow offensive start to the season.

Victor Wembanyama has had a bit of a rocky start on offense this season. While he’s averaging 18.9 points per game, his shooting percentages are down across the board, making just 22.2% of his three-point attempts. Despite the low success rate, he’s not hesitating—averaging over seven attempts per game, up from 5.5 last season.

After San Antonio’s loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday, Wembanyama addressed his shooting, but he didn’t seem too concerned.

“It’s just to keep playing my game, and my game consists of shooting threes, too,” Wembanyama stated. “So if I’m open, I’m just going to keep shooting them, and I’m going to make them.”

His approach is clear: if the shot’s available, he’ll take it. Confidence is one of Wemby’s greatest strengths, and limiting his three-point attempts likely isn’t the answer. With Devin Vassell sidelined, he may feel a greater responsibility to produce from the perimeter this season.

Spurs’ shot value on 3s through 7 games (idea at minimum is to get over a point per shot):

@ DAL 0.99 PPS
vs HOU 1.20 PPS
vs HOU 0.90 PPS
@ OKC 0.99 PPS
@ UTA 0.84 PPS
vs MIN 0.93 PPS
@ LAC 0.81 PPS

In his rookie year, Wembanyama converted an impressive 46.2% of his step-back threes, but this season, that shot isn’t falling—he’s hit only two of his seven attempts (28.6%). While deeper splits reveal similar trends, it’s still very early in the season.

Highest FT% this season:

95.0 — Nikola Vucevic
92.3 — Gradey Dick
92.2 — Cam Thomas
92.0 — Victor Wembanyama
92.0 — Jordan Hawkins

There’s no reason to panic. Wemby’s mechanics remain solid, as shown by his impressive 92% free-throw percentage. While it’s frustrating to see him playing below expectations, development is never linear. The Spurs are also missing key players like Tre Jones, Vassell, and now Jeremy Sohan. By midseason, we may be viewing this stretch in a completely different light.

While Wembanyama’s shot may not be falling at the desired rate, his defensive impact has been phenomenal. He currently leads the league in defending shots within 6 feet of the rim, holding opponents to just 35.5% shooting.

When Wemby defends a shot near the rim (<6 feet away) opponents are shooting 35.5%, by far the lowest in the NBA.

League average is 62%. 35.5% is bonkers.

Much to be said about Wemby’s overall play, but the rim protection has been astounding so far, even by his standards. pic.twitter.com/LdTudkBX1C

Wemby is also averaging 3.9 blocks per game, with a total of 29 blocks this season—more than four NBA teams, including the Knicks, Lakers, Bulls, and 76ers.

All 30 teams played tonight, and no other team had more than 8 blocks in a game.

Through the first seven games, we may not yet be seeing the best version of Wemby, but he’s still delivering highlight-reel plays. Check out this montage of his top moments so far:
