Why Wembanyama is still searching for 3-point balance

INGLEWOOD, CALIFORNIA - NOVEMBER 04: Victor Wembanyama #1 of the San Antonio Spurs reacts during a 113-104 loss to the LA Clippers at Intuit Dome on November 04, 2024 in Inglewood, California.

HOUSTON – The second field goal Victor Wembanyama attempted inside Los Angeles’ brand new Intuit Dome on Monday was a 3-point shot.

Those who have been following the early stages of the Spurs center’s sophomore season will not be surprised to learn that shot did not go in. Nor did six other attempts he fired from beyond the arc that night.

Give Wembanyama credit. He does not seem deterred by watching his 3-pointers bound off the rim.

“It’s just to keep playing my game,” Wembanyama said, describing his mindset during his long-distance slump. “My game consists of shooting threes, too.”

It is the part of Wembanyama’s well-rounded game that, over the first seven games of this season, has not quite come to fruition.

His box score from the 113-104 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers was typical of his campaign so far – eye-popping in many ways, and an eyesore in the 3-point column.

He torched the Clippers for 24 points, 13 rebounds and nine blocks, flirting hard with his first triple double of the season. He made a steady 7 of 13 shots from 2-point range, but was a ghastly 2 of 9 from the 3-point stripe.

Before coach Gregg Popovich went down with illness, he made a point to emphasize the Spurs do not want to remove the 3-point shot from Wembanyama’s bag. It is an approach assistant Mitch Johnson plans to continue now that he has been named the Spurs’ acting coach.

“Hopefully, you’re running plays or offense that produces the shots you want to produce from the right people,” Johnson said.

There is a certain segment of NBA watcher who seems to believe – perhaps not incorrectly – that a 7-foot-3 player like Wembanyama should be doing most of his damage from near the basket.

The Spurs want Wembanyama to feast on those shots, too. The 20-year-old Wembanyama, however, considers himself a multi-skilled basketball unicorn. He doesn’t want to be pigeonholed as simply a tall man.

He views himself as much more than that. The Spurs do as well.

“For Victor, he has so much skill,” Johnson said. “Putting it all together is difficult at times for a young player of his caliber. It’s difficult for every young player.”

Heading into Wednesday’s game at Houston, Wembanyama had made only 11 of 50 3-point attempts, a grisly 22%. It is the worst percentage in the league among players attempting at least five 3-point goals per game.

He shot 32.5% from 3-point land during his Rookie of the Year campaign.

It is the only part of Wembanyama’s game that hasn’t fully come out of hibernation this season. Through the first seven games, he is averaging 18.9 points, 10.3 rebounds and a league-best 3.9 blocks.

Against the Clippers, all seven of Wembanyama’s made two-point field goals came in the paint. He scored four baskets off lob passes, including a pair of spectacular one-handed finishes off passes from Chris Paul.

It is a connection the Spurs hope Wembanyama can continue to exploit at Houston and again in Thursday’s game against Portland at the Frost Bank Center.

“We’re figuring it out,” Paul said. “Both of us didn’t play in too many preseason games. So we’re sort of figuring it out as we go.”

When it comes to Wembanyama’s wayward 3-point stroke, Spurs coaches do not want to beat those attempts out of his shot profile entirely. His form is structurally fine, they say. It’s simply a matter of shot selection.

Ideally, Wembanyama’s 3-point tries would come within the flow of the offense and not so early in the shot clock.

“I think he’s done a great job,” Johnson said. “I think he’ll continue to do a good job and I’m sure he’ll be better with more seasoning experience.”

In the meantime, Wembanyama’s approach to fixing his 3-point shot remains a two-pronged one.

“I’m just going to see if I’m open,” Wembanyama said. “If I am, I’m just going to keep shooting.”
