(Victor Wembanyama)

(Chris Paul)

(Jeremy Sochan)

(Harrison Barnes)

(Julian Champagnie)

(Keldon Johnson)

(Stephon Castle)

(Zach Collins)

(Tre Jones)

(Blake Wesley)

(Malaki Branham)

(Charles Bassey)

(Sandro Mamukelashvili)

(Gregg Popovich)

Grades: Spurs at Heat – Preseason Game #4

The San Antonio Spurs dropped to 2-2 in preseason play following a 120-117 defeat at the hands of the Miami Heat. The Spurs, who were playing their first road game of the exhibition season, got off to a slow start before winning the third quarter 35-23 to give themselves a chance. Alas, the Heat were able to pull away late.

San Antonio will play their final preseason game on Thursday in Houston against the Rockets. After that, the Spurs will open the regular season on October 24th in Dallas against the Mavericks.

Spurs at Heat – Final Grades

Victor Wembanyama

Wembanyama got 17 minutes in the first half. He was loose with his decisions, his defense was sleepy and his shot-selection wasn’t the greatest — but it’s difficult to argue with his production. Eight points, seven rebounds, three assists and a block in 17 minutes? Yeah, that’s not bad… Wembanyama will need to tighten things up once the regular season rolls around but that looks to be just a matter of him locking in.

Grade: C-

Chris Paul

Paul got 25 minutes and there was good and bad. The good: His outside shot looked really crisp. He’ll be able to space the court with his jumper. Passing-wise, his wisdom of when and where to dish the rock is unmatched. Defensively, he exhibited a lot of toughness. The bad: He turned it over six times; that’s not something we’ll see often from him. His ball-handling against pressure was lacking.

Grade: B

Jeremy Sochan

Mostly positives from Sochan on this night. He did a great job of running the court or using his strength in the halfcourt to score at the rim. Sochan was also really good on the boards. He did have some mental lapses defensively and he was a bit sloppy at times offensively.

Grade: B

Harrison Barnes

We saw more life out of Barnes tonight than we have all preseason. He shot the ball well from deep and also worked his way into some quality attempts in the paint. Defensively, Barnes was alive on the help-side and moved well when defending the ball.

Grade: B-

Julian Champagnie

Champagnie continued his floor-spacing ways. In preseason play, he’s been San Antonio’s premier sniper. He might have forced a shot or two but overall he was helping the team out there. Champagnie also showed some muscle on a couple of his drives and his defensive intensity was a plus.

Grade: B+

Keldon Johnson

Johnson produced once again thanks to his ferocity and enthusiasm. He was throwing his body around to help make things happen. Defensively, there were a couple lapses but his energy was high on that end, too. Johnson got banged up and seemed to hurt his shoulder — let’s hope he’s okay for when the real season begins.

Grade: B

Stephon Castle

It was a mixed bag for the rookie. The good: His patience and power when attacking the rim continues to impress. It looks like getting to the free throw line could develop into a superpower for him. Castle’s passing has been excellent — particularly on the move. Defensively, there were glimpses of his vast potential on that end. The bad: Castle missed all four of his three-point attempts. Obviously, everyone will be keeping a close eye on his three-point percentage this season. The rook also turned the ball over too much and was caught overplaying a couple times on defense.

Grade: C

Zach Collins

Collins played well. He provided the Spurs with a physical presence in the lane. He was strong with the ball and his passing was some of the best on the team. Collins did well enough to make a strong case that he should be the backup center to begin the season.

Grade: B

Tre Jones

Over his last two preseason games, Jones is now 8-for-8 from the field. He was also one of the few Spurs who did an adequate job of taking care of the basketball. Jones’ speed and jumping ability really popped. He was even flying into the trees to rip down rebounds.

Grade: B+

Blake Wesley

Wesley wasn’t quite as good as we’ve witnessed previously in the preseason. His defensive electricity was there but he wasn’t impacting the proceedings much. Offensively, he rarely bent the defense, didn’t look for his own shot enough and was just too passive overall.

Grade: C-

Malaki Branham

Branham played the last 13 minutes of the ballgame. In those minutes, he found time to shoot ten times. His efficiency was better tonight but it’s tough to imagine his spot in the rotation once the regular season begins if he’s not going to mix in more passes. So far in the preseason, his aggression level has been too, too much.

Grade: B

Charles Bassey

Bassey made his preseason debut against the Heat. It was his first game since tearing his ACL in December. Considering the layoff, I thought he looked solid. Bassey had a powerful finish, rebounded well and challenged shots. He looks to be ready to fight for playing time once again.

Grade: B+

Sandro Mamukelashvili

Mamukelashvili didn’t get into the game until the final five minutes but he immediately helped the team by hustling and relentlessly moving.

Grade: B

Pop

We got the best glimpse of what Pop is thinking about in terms of the rotation. The first five players off the bench were Jones, Johnson, Collins, Castle and Wesley. If that is indeed the ten-man rotation, that means Branham, Mamukelashvili and Bassey will begin the season on the outside looking in.
