Barnes at center of Spurs’ chemistry-building efforts

Spurs Harrison Barnes speaks during Spurs Media Day activities Monday morning at the Victory Capital Performance Center.

Harrison Barnes offered a quick and enthusiastic reply when asked about the group text the Spurs players started last month.

“It’s been lively,” he said with a smile.

And one of the biggest reasons for the chat’s entertaining back-and-forth? Barnes himself.

“I don’t want to take all the credit for it, but I definitely stirred the pot early and the guys have taken it by storm,” the 13th-year forward said. “Blake (Wesley) is probably the most active. He has got a lot to say, but it’s fun.”

Barnes has been at the center of efforts to build camaraderie at the Victory Capital Performance Center ever since the Spurs acquired him from Sacramento in a three-team trade in July.

“Like I have always said, camaraderie off the court feeds into how we play on the court,” he said. “Guys have been great communicating with the group chat and with dinners we have done. That is going to bode well for us down the line.”

The Spurs believe they have a good blend of young and old after adding Barnes, 32, and Chris Paul, 39, to a squad that ranked as the NBA’s youngest last season with an average player age of 23.52 years old.

“We are not fully young anymore where we don’t have any experience, maturity and things like that,” said Tre Jones, 24. “But we still have some of the younger jokes and fun things. We are able to keep ‘CP’ and ‘HB’ young still but also be on the mature side of things.”

Barnes went to dinner earlier this week with Sandro Mamukelashvili, 25, Julian Champagnie, 23, and Malaki Branham, 21.

“It’s trending in the right direction, whether it’s been with team dinners or just hanging out,” Barnes said of the chemistry-building efforts. “It’s just constantly spending time with guys off the floor and getting to know them, their backgrounds, their families, things like that. It’s made (practice) more intense and a lot more fun.”

Paul joined Barnes in giving a thumbs up to the emerging team chemistry.

“Aside from from hooping and playing basketball, you spend a lot of time with each other,” the 19th-year point guard said. “And it’s a great group to be around, I can honestly say that.”

Paul recalls ‘charismatic’ Mutombo

One of Paul’s cherished videos on his phone involves Dikembe Mutombo, the NBA defensive great and longtime global ambassador for the game who died Monday at 58 from brain cancer.

"He was just always charismatic, obviously funny, with his, ‘No, no, no. Not in my house,’ " Paul said of how Mutombo often punctuated his shot blocks with those words and his trademark finger wag. “I’ve got a funny clip on my phone of my daughter doing it when she was a baby.”

The careers of Paul and Mutombo overlapped a few seasons, with Paul entering the NBA in 2005 and Mutombo retired after the 2008-09 season, his 18th in the NBA.

“Dikembe was special, not only to the league but to his country (the Democratic Republic of the Congo), to everybody,” Paul said. “He just had a unique personality. I got a chance to play against him, which is wild. I also got a chance to play in the first NBA game in Africa, in Johannesburg. I remember him being such a big part of that.”
