NEW ORLEANS – For Harrison Barnes, there are days when being in the Spurs’ locker room feels a bit like being abandoned in a foreign country without a translator.
Dylan Harper and Carter Bryant, the Spurs’ two youngest players, will get to talking in the ever-evolving TikTok-ified language popular among teenagers today – with its cooked, chopped, six-seven, skibbidi rizz.
To Barnes, the 33-year-old veteran who has seemed 45 since the moment he stepped foot in the NBA, the two rookies might as well be speaking ancient Sumerian.
“It takes him a while to adapt to the lingo,” Bryant said.
Guilty as charged, Barnes said.
Just don’t expect him to go purchasing the “Gen Z-to-Millennial” Rosetta Stone starter pack anytime soon.
“Proper English is always good,” Barnes said.
That is one of the many lessons Barnes is hoping to impart to the newest generation of neophytes who have infiltrated the Spurs’ locker room.
Granted, he and the Spurs’ two fellow 30-somethings – the 33-year-old Bismack Biyombo and 34-year-old Kelly Olynyk – don’t always feel prehistoric.
Yet the oldest players on the Spurs’ roster view it as part of the job to bequeath their hard-won wisdom to the kids these days.
“We have a good group of young guys,” Biyombo said. “Everybody gets along. Everybody wants to have fun with each other and win.”
The Spurs’ oldest players aren’t anywhere near the oldest players in the league. Fourteen teams have at least one player older than the Spurs’ eldest statesman, Olynyk.
Still, rookies in the NBA seem to get younger as the veterans stay the same age.
Harper is 19. Carter turned 20 last month. The Spurs’ star player, Victor Wembanyama, is only 21.
They were in grade school when the likes of Barnes and Biymobo made their NBA debuts.
“When they grew up is a lot different than when we grew up,” Harper said. “Some of the words we say might be a little different.”
To Spurs coach Mitch Johnson, whose team plays at New Orleans on Monday, the wide-ranging age of his roster is part of what makes the locker room fun.
“At times, the older ones are barking at the younger ones like older dogs do puppies,” Johnson said. “Other times, the bigger personalities step up and command the room. Sometimes, you have this electric energy from these young guys. It’s a good balance.”
In one postgame locker room earlier this season, Bryant was riffing on one of Biyombo’s nicknames, “The Black Panther.”
“Give me my vibranium!” Bryant shouted, mimicking the pitch-perfect accent of that film’s titular character.
Biyombo broke down laughing.
More than any other player on the Spurs’ roster, Biyombo was literally born to be an older brother.
“I have three brothers and three sisters, and I’m the oldest of seven,” Biyombo said. “So I know how to be around kids.”
In Harper and Bryant, the Spurs are lucky to have a pair of willing learners. Selected No. 2 overall in June out of Rutgers, Harper has been a revelation for the Spurs so far during his rookie season.
He finally hit a speed bump in Friday’s loss at Cleveland, going 1-of-11 from the floor for a season-low three points.
The Spurs’ vets were the first to pick Harper up.
“They’re going to sit me down and tell me what they see out there,” Harper said. “Just everyone is like a family. They’re always going to tell me what I’m doing wrong and correct me.”
Bryant, drafted 14th out of Arizona last summer, has become something of Barnes’ personal intern since joining the Spurs.
“HB has done a great job of showing me the ropes,” Bryant said. “Trying to do the same exact thing every time I walk into the facility, having the same exact routine, the same exact stretch routine, do my workout stuff the same exact way.”
Like any good mentor, Barnes makes certain to tell Bryant the “why” of things and not just the “how.”
“The things I work on every day, the ballhandling, the finishing, the shooting, it may not show right now,” Bryant said. “But looking ahead three, four years, five years, we’re looking to be one of the best franchises in the NBA and I want to be a part of that.”
Lest he be viewed as an out-of-touch old man, Barnes has displayed a willingness to meet the team’s youngsters where they are.
On a recent road trip to Phoenix, Bryant gifted Barnes with a PlayStation gaming system. Now video games have become a part of the pair’s bonding experience.
ARC Raiders is the current obsession.
“Every road trip, Carter comes to my room, sets it up for me, gets me on the hotel WiFi,” Barnes said. “It’s his rookie duty.”
All in all, the Spurs’ older players enjoy having the kids around.
“It’s a good vibe,” Barnes said. “It definitely keeps you young.”
That doesn’t mean Barnes is set on learning TikTok-ese anytime soon. There are some new tricks this old dog doesn’t care enough to learn.
“It’s always good to just say what you mean,” Barnes said. “I’m not on TikTok as much, so I’ll let them have that.”
