What Chris Paul, Harrison Barnes said during their first Spurs presser
Harrison Barnes, who was traded to the San Antonio Spurs while previously playing for the Sacramento Kings, was seen making remarks to the members of the press during a press conference held by the Spurs franchise shortly after the trade was announced on July 9, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas.
Chris Paul came “to hoop.” Harrison Barnes came to help build a playoff contender.
On Tuesday, the two newest Spurs were formally introduced during a media availability at the Victory Capital Performance Center. During their individual press conferences, the veterans shared their thoughts on teaming up with Victor Wembanyama, playing for Gregg Popovich, embracing their role as elder mentors and more.
Here are a few excerpts from their respective interviews.
Chris Paul
On signing a one-year deal with the Spurs: “Man, the opportunity to play, to hoop, to compete. Obviously, this is a first-class organization and for me, I’d love nothing more than he opportunity to play and contribute and hoop. And hoop, yeah.”
On playing for Popovich: “Man, it’s definitely gonna be an honor and a privilege. Obviously, I’ve admired Pop from afar for years. When you’re in this for a while, as he’s done for a long time, there’s so much respect there. Not only for his basketball IQ but just for who he is as a person, as a competitor and all of that.”
“Pop has always been someone I’ve spoken to before the jump ball, during the game or what not, just a little conversation here and there. So I’m excited to learn from him and the coaching staff here.”
On teaming up with Wembanyama: “Well, that definitely helps. It definitely didn’t hurt. But also knowing the pedigree this organization has. Everything around it, from coaches to front office. I’ve played for a number of teams now and Pop and the Spurs definitely have the deepest tree in the league. When I say the tree, everybody sort of branches off from here and ends up better.
“Victor being here helped, too. Obviously. And getting a chance to watch him. I played against him this season and I’ll tell you there’s probably not a player in the league that everybody talks about after the game like him. Me and Harrison was on our flight yesterday just talking about how cool it’s going to be at this point in our careers to get a chance to appreciate him day in and day out."
On relating to a team filled with youngsters: "I think a lot of it is, I still look at myself as a big kid. I get a chance to play basketball every day and say that’s my way of life, something I’ve been doing since I was 4 or 5 years old. But also, I’m so connected to the game from a grassroots standpoint.
“I’m a parent, too. I have a 15-year-old son and a daughter who’s about to be 12. So I’m not trying to be in the locker room and be their dad or nothing like that. For me, there’s connectivity. And I think the thing that connects us all is this game and always trying to get better.”
On his past battles with the Spurs: “I don’t think I’ve played against another team more than I’ve played against the Spurs in my career. So I’ve learned a lot from watching this team. I was at the Finals when they won in Cleveland (in 2007). I was at Game 4, courtside. Tony (Parker) was a big brother to me when I came into the NBA. And so when I came here it was cool. I got a text from Tim (Duncan). I got a text from Manu (Ginobili). I got a text from Tony. It’s really cool to be here.”
Harrison Barnes
On joining the Spurs: "Competing against the Spurs for a number of years, I have the utmost respect for the franchise and everything that they’ve accomplished. The opportunity to play for Pop, having some (FIBA) World Cup experience with him. You know, he’s a character. And just excited to be here with this group.
“Obviously, coming in with CP we’re going to be two of the older guys in the locker room. But just getting a chance to talk with some of the guys here, there’s good energy, good excitement. I’m looking forward to it.”
On waiving his trade kicker (worth almost $2 million) to facilitate the Spurs’ trade with Sacramento: “Just the opportunity. It’s funny, with the new CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement) the trade kicker become more of a play than I was expecting. But I think just the opportunity to come here and play for Pop, play with this group is exciting. Just because it takes a while to build things in this league. In order to be good you have to have a formula to success. And I think that over the years the Spurs have been one of the toughest teams I’ve ever competed against. They’ve been a first-class organization in every way.”
On playing with Wembanyama: "He’s a great young player in this league. Definitely on his way to being one of the best. He was a big part of it.
“But I think it’s the collective overall. It’s the organization, the people that are here, the people on the team. Since I landed, just the warmth I’ve felt from every single person in his building. In an authentic way. Not something that’s for show or people just putting on an act. Just genuinely how people are treated here from the people I’ve talked to, former players that have been here, I think that really made a difference.”
On his expected role in San Antonio: “Just really to do anything that’s asked of me. The goal every season is to go out there, play 82 games and give it my best. The last two seasons, I’ve been able to do that. So I’m excited to be able to build with this group. I know there’s a lot of young talent in this group and I definitely want to try to maximize that.”
On what he remembers about playing under Popovich in the 2019 FIBA World Cup: "Man, um, great team dinners. But you know, from just different sayings that he’d have on the court. The guy is a basketball encyclopedia. To in the meetings, we’re having history lessons about everything under the sun. And somehow it gets back to basketball, but how it starts you have no idea where it’s going.
“So I think just how he is personally. I think he connects with every single player. He talks to every single player differently and knows how to connect with them. I think that’s why me and him kind of hit it off. He’s a straight shooter. I like that, so we were just able to bond that way.”
On embracing his role as a mentor on one of the league’s youngest teams: "Sometimes when you say mentor it just makes you sound really old. But I definitely look forward to just putting my arm around guys and getting to work. I think the best way to really connect with guys is just to do your process with them. It’s getting in the weight room. It’s getting on the court. The cold tubs, the bus rides, the plane rides, all those types of things.
"You gotta get to know guys on a personal level before you get into the nitty-gritty of basketball. That’s the part I’m most excited about, just connecting with guys and seeing where everyone is at and getting to know them that way.”
