Jacob Douglas、Jesus Gomez、J.R.
Jacob
Marilyn
Jesus

Re-drafting the Spurs first round picks, Round 2: Finding the perfect complementary players
Each team has its star, now it’s time to start building around them.
The Spurs have a well-earned reputation for being great drafters. From superstars to elite role players, San Antonio has traditionally gotten contributors even without high picks in the Gregg Popovich era. The question is, just how deep is the talent pool, really? The PtR staff set out to find the answer.
Jacob Douglas, Jesus Gomez, J.R. Wilco and I participated in a snake draft to build teams from the pool of Spurs’ first-round draft picks of the Pop era — maybe it’s too overly-specific but you’ve got to start somewhere. (And if we have a lot of fun, maybe we’ll do it again with a much wider pool to choose from.) The pool begins with Tim Duncan through Stephon Castle for a total of 22 players, including draft night acquisition Kawhi Leonard but not picks who never played for the Spurs. Below are the players drafted so far:
Team Jacob
- Victor Wembanyama, C (1st, 2023)
Team J.R.
- Tim Duncan, PF (1st, 1997)
Team Marilyn
- Tony Parker, PG (28th, 2001)
Team Jesus
- Kawhi Leonard, SF (15th, 2011)
After everyone picked their foundation players in the first round, it’s time to start building around them. Here are the players still waiting to be drafted:
- Beno Udrih, PG (28th, 2004)
- Ian Mahimi, C (28th, 2005)
- Tiago Splitter, C (28th, 2007)
- George Hill, PG (26th, 2008)
- James Anderson, SG (20th, 2009)
- Cory Joseph, PG (29th, 2011)
- Kyle Anderson, SF (30th, 2014)
- Dejounte Murray, PG (29th, 2016)
- Derrick White, SG (29th, 2017)
- Lonnie Walker, SG (18th, 2018)
- Luka Samanic, PF (19th, 2019)
- Keldon Johnson, SF (29th, 2019)
- Devin Vassell, SG (11th, 2020)
- Josh Primo, PG (12th, 2021)
- Jeremy Sochan, PF (9th, 2022)
- Malaki Branham, SG (20th, 2022)
- Blake Wesley, SG (24th, 2022)
- Stephon Castle, PG (4th, 2024)
There’s still a lot of work to do, so here were the results from the second round! (Reminder, because this is a snake draft, the order of choosing is the reversed of the previous round.)
5. Jesus Gomez: Devin Vassell (11th, 2020)
Picking Kawhi Leonard fourth was easy. The next selection wasn’t because it was the one that would give my team an identity. Derrick White would have helped lock down the perimeter on defense at the cost of some explosiveness on offense. Dejounte Murray could have provided a second go-to scorer but I want Kawhi to have the ball in his hands and DJ didn’t like playing second fiddle in Atlanta. The one player who seemed like a perfect fit was Vassell since he’s a natural second (or third) option who doesn’t need a lot of touches to score but is still able to create in a pinch, especially if the best wing defender is busy guarding Leonard. I’m set at the wing and now I can focus on getting some size and complementary ball handling.
6. Marilyn Dubinski: Derrick White (29th, 2017)
I chose Tony for my point guard, so now it’s time to get him some defensive help in the backcourt, and who better than perhaps the best two-way role player in the NBA right now? It’s hard for me to explain how high I am on White and how badly I wish there was a path between keeping him and getting Wemby, but alas, it was not meant to be. Still, what better way for me to get him back than on a fantasy team (that doesn’t cost me money) while he’s here for the choosing but likely won’t be the next time I pick? My backcourt is set with two scoring guards who don’t have to be in the same place to be effective, with one who can drive and create for others and another who can shoot from outside and defend the point of attack.
7. J.R. Wilco: Tiago Splitter (28th, 2017)
Marilyn broke my heart by picking White, so I took the player I had right next to him on my pre-draft board, Tiago Splitter. Even though a Duncan-Splitter pairing might not fit the current league’s style of play, I don’t have to beat the rest of the teams in the league, I just need to edge the other three teams I’m competing with — and none of them are going to be playing five out, that’s for sure. So the best way to come out on top is to lock down the paint on defense, and be sure that everyone can move the ball from good to great until some Beautiful Basketball offense finds someone with a wide-open three or a dunk. Neither of my picks so far can hit a three, but lots of guys left on the board can, so I’m not worried. Or at least I’m less worried than I’d be if I didn’t have a legit five that would allow me to play Tim at his natural power forward position — so I’ll roll the dice by nailing down my frontcourt first, and relying on the guard/wing depth in this draft to flesh out my squad.
8. Jacob Douglas: Dejounte Murray (29th, 2016)
I wanted to pair Wembanyama with a dynamic ball-handler and someone who can take on the scoring load if needed. I went with the only post-big three era player who was drafted by the Spurs and made an All-Star game (even if he was an injury replacement). Last season, rumors swirled about San Antonio making this a real-life possibility. When we last saw him as a lead ball-handler, Murray averaged over 21 points and 9 assists with 2 steals per game. His improved jump shot will make him a dynamic partner in the pick-and-roll with Wemby. I like the length he provides at the point of attack, and he can even guard wings if we need him to.
