Redrafting the Spurs first round picks, Round 3: Finding a team identity

Los Angeles Clippers v San Antonio Spurs

As we pick our third players, it’s time to start thinking about what identity our teams will have.

The Spurs have a well-earned reputation for being great drafters. From superstars to elite role players, San Antonio has traditionally gotten contributors even without high picks in the Gregg Popovich era. The question is, just how deep is the talent pool, really? The PtR staff set out to find the answer.

Jacob Douglas, Jesus Gomez, J.R. Wilco and I participated in a snake draft to build teams from the pool of Spurs’ first-round draft picks of the Pop era — maybe it’s too overly-specific but you’ve got to start somewhere. (And if we have a lot of fun — hint, we are — maybe we’ll do it again with a much wider pool to choose from.) The pool begins with Tim Duncan through Stephon Castle for a total of 22 players, including draft night acquisition Kawhi Leonard but not picks who never played for the Spurs. Below are the players drafted so far:

Team Jacob

  • Dejounte Murray, PG (29th, 2016)
  • Victor Wembanyama, C (1st, 2023)

Team J.R.

  • Tim Duncan, PF (1st, 1997)
  • Tiago Splitter, C (28th, 2007)

Team Marilyn

  • Tony Parker, PG (28th, 2001)
  • Derrick White, SG (29th, 2017)

Team Jesus

  • Devin Vassell, SG (11th, 2020)
  • Kawhi Leonard, SF (15th, 2011)

And here are the players still waiting to be drafted:

  • Beno Udrih, PG (28th, 2004)
  • Ian Mahimi, C (28th, 2005)
  • George Hill, PG (26th, 2008)
  • James Anderson, SG (20th, 2009)
  • Cory Joseph, PG (29th, 2011)
  • Kyle Anderson, SF (30th, 2014)
  • Lonnie Walker, SG (18th, 2018)
  • Luka Samanic, PF (19th, 2019)
  • Keldon Johnson, SF (29th, 2019)
  • Josh Primo, PG (12th, 2021)
  • Jeremy Sochan, PF (9th, 2022)
  • Malaki Branham, SG (20th, 2022)
  • Blake Wesley, SG (24th, 2022)
  • Stephon Castle, PG (4th, 2024)

In a way, this is the most important round since now is the time to start really considering team identity, so each decision is key. On to the third round! (Reminder, because this is a snake draft, the order of choosing is the reverse of the previous round.)

9. Jacob Douglas: Kyle Anderson (30th, 2014)

I drafted my star big man and guard. Now I want to surround them with wings and shooters. I went with one of the league’s best glue guys in Anderson. Albeit a streaky shooter (with an insane form), Slow-Mo gives us a defender who can guard multiple positions, handle the ball and make secondary passing reads and play inside if needed. If I had to pick a specific year of Anderson’s career, it would be his 2020-2021 season with the Memphis Grizzlies when he stuffed the stat sheet, averaging 12.4 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.2 steals while shooting 46.8% from the field, 36% from three and 78.3% from the free throw line. With Wembanyama, Murray and Anderson we have a long, defensive foundation to build the team upon.

10. J.R. Wilco: George Hill (26th, 2008)

Sniped once again (last round I was about to take Derrick White when Marilyn did) I find myself needing perimeter defense and ball handling and three-point shooting … maybe I’m better off with Hill than Slow-Mo anyway. After all, you could do worse than Pop’s Favorite Player. I’m eventually going to need a point guard, but there are so many in this draft it’d be hard to throw a rock without hitting three of them. Besides, Hill knows Pop’s sets frontwards and backwards, so he could initiate, play off-ball and hit threes, or set picks and facilitate. I’m satisfied with Georgie even if I need to play him at SF. More than satisfied, I’m pleased. Thanks Jacob!

11. Marilyn Dubinski: Jeremy Sochan (9th, 2023)

I have my backcourt all set, and now it’s time to add some size. I may be leaning on potential here, but Jeremy Sochan is young with plenty of upside. He’s already one of the best young defenders in the league and can arguably guard all five positions (including smaller centers). On offense, he’s a good scorer around the rim with an improving (if unconventional) outside shot, as well as the ability to be a secondary ball-handler and playmaker. (Not that he’ll have to do that too much with Parker and White on the floor, so thankfully no repeat of the first half of 2023-24.) Perhaps most importantly, I’m building a quick team that can get out and run in transition, and Sochan is certainly someone who will add to that identity.

12. Jesus Gomez: Keldon Johnson (29th, 2019)

We are missing some personality here. The Leonard-Vassell duo gives me reliable scoring, but it’s undeniably a quiet and somewhat boring core. Vibes matter, and we are missing an X Factor, someone who will provide energy and physicality and who can go off on any given night. Keldon Johnson is that guy. Defensively we could have some issues against bigger frontcourts, but if Johnson hits his threes and attacks closeouts, the offense should be potent enough to make up for it. There’s still time to add some size inside and more disruptive defenders, but we know what we are: a modern team that can run or play in the half-court, and switch if needed. I have all the scoring I need. Now all that’s left is getting role players who can help on the other side of the ball.
