The Spurs’ No. 1 overall draft pick, touted as the greatest prospect since LeBron James, managed to exceed expectations throughout a singular rookie season that stands as one of the most impressive in NBA history. So, it’s no surprise that those steeped in the game of basketball believe the 20-year-old star will soon be the king of the league.
In an anonymous poll of 18 professional coaches, scouts and executives conducted by ESPN, Wembanyama named most likely to be league’s best player in five years. Wembanyama received 12 of the 18 votes, ahead of Oklahoma City guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (two), Dallas guard Luka Doncic (two), Minnesota guard Anthony Edwards (one) and Denver center Nikola Jokic (one).
“Wembanyama, the 7-foot-4 French phenom coming off a unanimous Rookie of the Year selection and leading his country to a silver medal in the Paris Olympics, has met or exceeded the lofty expectations placed on him since entering the league ahead of the 2023-24 season,” ESPN’s Tim Bontemps wrote. “Joining Wemby on the list are three elite young stars – Doncic (25), Gilgeous-Alexander (26) and Edwards (23) – and the 29-year-old Jokic, with the East executive who picked him arguing that the Nuggets big man will remain atop the league well into his mid-30s.”
Last season, Wembanyama became the sixth unanimous Rookie of the Year and first rookie to make the All-Defensive first team. So, my first impression isn’t that I exceeded any expectations, (it’s) that I should have done more.”
