The Ringer

Spurs’ Wembanyama voted ‘best of the NBA’s next generation’

San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) defends Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards during the second half of their NBA game at the Frost Bank Center on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2024. San Antonio held on to beat Minnesota 113-112.

Even now, in the midst of the NBA playoffs, the question of “who’s next?” permeates the 24-hour news cycle. Spotify-owned sports and pop culture site The Ringer was the latest to jump into the fray by enlisting its 12 basketball staffers to rate the 25 best players yet to turn 26 years old for its “Best of the Next Generation” rankings.

The Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama wound up atop a list that included the Timberwolves’ Anthony Edwards (22 years old) and Mavericks’ Luka Doncic (25) – both of whom are currently duking it out in the Western Conference Finals. Wembanyama, the 20-year-old unanimous Rookie of the Year, scored 48.1 points (out of 50) to finish No. 1 ahead of Edwards (47), Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexader (45.8), Doncic (45.4) and Indiana’s Tyrese Haliburton (42.3).

“Talent is a prerequisite for greatness,” The Ringer’s Howard Beck wrote, “but it’s Wembanyama’s overall persona that makes me believe. … Only two things can possibly derail or diminish Wembanyama, both out of his control: injuries and the roster.”

The 12 panelists ranked players on a 1-10 scale across five different categories: current performance, future performance, “gets the people going” (charisma and marketability), intangibles and foundational qualities.

Wembanyama’s grade was buoyed by perfect scores in future performance and foundational qualities plus a category-best 9.7 in intangibles. The fearless, high-flying, smack-talking Edwards received the poll’s only other 10 in “gets the people going.”

In the end, a 20-year-old rookie whose team won just 22 games this season beat out the more accomplished under-26 stars because there is no apparent cap on his mind-bending potential. The 7-foot-3 Wembanyama was the fourth rookie to average at least 20 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks and the first ever named to the All-Defensive first team while also finishing as runner-up for Defensive Player of the Year. He became the first player in NBA history to tally 20 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, three blocks, one steal and one 3-pointer per game, doing so despite ranking 79th in minutes (29.7).

Still seven months shy of his 21st birthday, Wembanyama seems destined to join Michael Jordan, Hakeem Olajuwon and Giannis Antetokounmpo as the fourth player to win MVP and Defensive Player of the Year in the same season. And he could eventually become the first to pull that off multiple times.

“I’m not sure any prediction for Wemby will sound bold, given the potential we’ve already seen,” Beck wrote. “But here goes: He’s winning at least three MVPs, three DPOYs, and three championships.”

Reporters who cover the NBA for a living are far from alone in gushing over Wembanyama. Even the superstars who encountered him this season ended up raving afterwards like a proud parent whose kid just took it to them in a one-on-one driveway duel.

"As long as Victor is healthy,” two-time MVP Antetokounmpo said in February, “the league is his.”
