Fan hits 3-pointer for $75,000
Patrick Ruder’s evening wasn’t bad.
He got a courtside seat, and during a first-half lull in the action, he made $75,000.
The 28-year-old Kelly AFB linguist swished a three-point shot - from the exact spot on the Alamodome floor where Spur Sean Elliott sank the Memorial Day Miracle shot against the Portland Trail Blazers - in one try.
Ruder was selected from more than 600 participants in the “Southwestern Bell Miracle Shot” contest.
Besides his $75,000 prize, Southwestern Bell contributed $25,000 to the Spurs Drug-Free Youth Basketball League.
Ruder said he kept his focus by mentally dismembering the crowd.
“Thirty-five thousand fans,” he said. “That’s 70,000 eyes, 700,000 fingers and toes. That helped me keep my mind off the pressure.”
A Southwestern Bell spokesman said Ruder made six consecutive three-point shots in preliminary competition Tuesday.
Three other men also qualified. The only requirements: they could not have played in high school or college basketball in the past five years and never professionally.
Lee Wenner, 23, will try to hit a three-pointer during Game 2 on Friday.
If games 6 and 7 are held, the last two qualifiers also will have a chance at each winning $75,000.
Southwestern Bell will host a $100,000 free throw shooting contest on Monday to benefit local charities: the San Antonio Education Partnership, the Communities in Schools program and Junior Achievement.

Amid the pre-game throng outside the Alamodome, Larry Gross dragged a 10-foot cedar cross behind him.
Gross, who lives in Utopia - the city, not the state of mind - said he was there to spread the Gospel.
“I’ve been on a mission for Jesus and I love the Spurs,” he said.
He said his favorite players are David Robinson and Avery Johnson, both of whom are very up front about the importance of faith in their lives.

Gov. George W. Bush, who’s slated to attend Game 2 Friday as a guest of Spurs owner Peter Holt, has a wager going with New York Gov. George Pataki.
If the Spurs lose the series, Bush will give Pataki a pair of Texas- style western boots with spurs. If the Knicks lose the NBA championship, Pataki promises to send Bush two sandwiches from Ben’s Best Deli and a dozen New York City bagels.
