Nice guys are nice, but they don’t win the title OK, San Antonio, it’s time to get our heads out of the clouds and put our feet back in the sand.

I’m writing in response of Earline Miller’s letter (Sunday, May 31).

I’m so sick and tired of whenever we discuss the Spurs and their lack of winning a championship and talk about dealing David Robinson for some fresh talent, there’s always the “nice guy” argument.

This is the problem with San Antonio, we don’t want to win, we want to be nice.

Well, we didn’t bring David Robinson to San Antonio to be nice and to be a great guy and a real idol to all the kiddies out there.

We wanted an NBA championship, and we still don’t have it.

Why not?

Whenever we bring in a great player with a bad attitude (a k a Dennis Rodman), we end up running him out of town. So what he missed the bus! He made the game and that was what counts.

Hey Pop, they didn’t call the Pistons “Bad Boys” for nothing. But we got rid of the one player who really seemed to want to win no matter what the cost, and now he’s hooping it up north with MJ and the Bulls.

I wonder if Dennis thinks of San Antonio when he polishes his rings.

The truth is - and we all know it - that if we could deal Robinson for a player such as Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, or Grant Hill, we would and should.

Dave isn’t going to play forever, and Tim Duncan won’t be able to win with the Spurs’ supporting cast, and we need to deal while we still have the ace in the hole.

It’s time to get mean; it’s time to win. Matt Younkin, San Antonio

Why did so many stars not skate in ice show?

I was pleased to see your coverage of the Champions on Ice exhibition held at the Alamodome on Saturday, May 30. The crowd was enthusiastic, and the show was fantastic.

What most of the 15,500 people there wanted to know, however, was why were many of the top skaters who were scheduled to appear not present?

At least six of the top skaters who were included in advertising of the event did not skate (more than one-third of the 20 listed in television and newspaper ads), including probably the most popular draw, Michelle Kwan.

Other no-shows included Elvis Stojko (Canada), Surya Bonaly and Philippe Candeloro (France), and Michael Weiss (United States).

I overheard numerous people at the event express disappointment over Michelle Kwan’s absence.

The account of the event in the paper was good but fell short by not answering the most obvious question of the evening: why were those stars missing?

Understandably, this was just an exhibition that came with a disclaimer that the “cast of skaters may change due to injury or other unforeseen circumstances.”

But I’m sure many of the ticket holders who came to see Michelle Kwan, Elvis Stojko, etc. want to know why they were not present. Jim Wilson, San Antonio

Don’t let Spurs fool you: WPHL not answer

I cannot understand the logic behind the Spurs’ recent acquisition of the rights of a Western Professional Hockey League team for San Antonio.

If they truly want to bring “quality” sports entertainment to the city, the WPHL is not the answer.

The WPHL is junior hockey at best. What I want to know is: are the Spurs using this as a ploy to build support for a multi-use sports arena in San Antonio?

And if so, why not buy the Dragons instead? Current owners Don Levins and Bruce Saurs have been trying to sell to local investors since the beginning of last season.

Mrs. McCombs, are you still interested? Erik Patek, San Antonio

There’s just no trust between players, owners

Is your thought process scrambled yet? Have you figured out yet whether to simply sit down and enjoy the playoffs or to agonize over the inner state of the league and Chicago Bulls?

We’ve seen some brilliant play, some eye-brow raising miscues, and absent-minded defensive and offensive lapses. We’ve reveled in Michael Jordan’s creative moves and indomitable will, wondered about Karl Malone’s timidity and indecision, John Stockton’s ageless sprints and deft passes, and heart- stopping shots from the role players.

Then we hear Phil Jackson, Jordan and Scottie Pippen groaning about being unappreciated and Bulls vice president Jerry Krause babbling about some need to break up his team because it is an organization that wins games.

Sure, Jerry, we’ll see the organization suit up when Jordan and Pippen depart while you gloat if the Bulls fail to keep their title.

Then we have Commissioner David Stern and players union boss Billy Hunter issuing ominous statements about the very real possibility of not only a summer lockout, but a work stoppage next season.

Now we’re supposed to work our brains and acknowledge that the league and players really do have a hard time trying to figure out how to fairly spread around the billions in revenue the league is bringing in from around the globe.

Normal people would assume that’s easy. Get rid of some of the power and money-mad agents, owners and players who insist that there can’t be any limit to anybody’s individual income, even if it reaches to such stratospheric heights of $20 million to $30 million a year.

We peer with a jaundiced eye at the players - characters who toss $25,000 around on a craps table, buy 10 to 15 cars, fly entourages around the country on a whim, and then still complain about their paychecks.

On the other hand, we close our ears to the whines of a filthy rich owner who does pretty much the same thing - we don’t hear about it, but we do see their mansions and know about their private jets, yachts and stock options.

We do know that a sensible financial solution must be evident, and that both sides should see it and close the issue without any disturbance of the league’s daily life. How come they can’t?

What’s lacking is any semblance of trust, on either side. A new buddy: Just when did Isiah Thomas become Jordan’s newest best friend?

It really wasn’t that many All- Star Games ago when Jordan suspected Thomas was behind the East team’s decision to keep the ball out of the hands of the Bulls star.

The original Dream Team isn’t ancient history, and Jordan, one of the three premier members of that squad, is suspected of making sure that Thomas was left home.

Now Thomas all but gushes over Jordan. Jordan hasn’t said much about Thomas, but he’s the one sitting in the catbird seat so relished by Thomas. Rumblings in the corridors: The consensus of the various members of the media assembled in Salt Lake City was that the Spurs wouldn’t be erring with the right trade of David Robinson.

“I’d do that in a minute,” one said of the speculated move for Detroit’s Grant Hill. “But only if I were the Spurs.”

Also receiving thumbs up were a nice draft pick, Penny Hardaway and Bo Outlaw from Orlando, and a package including Juwan Howard and Calbert Cheaney from Washington.

Reports surrounding Hardaway, though, are that he’s still not healthy enough to play a full-court game. Plus, Penny is informing one and all that there are only two or three teams he would consider re-signing with after next season when he becomes a free agent.

Some were intrigued (none more than Charlotte coach Dave Cowens) with the rumor of Anthony Mason and Glen Rice but worried about Mason’s pugnacious attitude and off-court reputation. “Still, skill-wise, that would give the Spurs a real nice and NBA-type frontline,” one guru said.

Opinion givers also agreed that the downside to the move could be pretty steep, giving up the defensive presence of Robinson, still considered the third-best center in the league behind Shaquille O’Neal and Hakeem Olajuwon.

Not mentioned enough, though, is the smack in the face that the Spurs (who insist that the center is not available to any team) would be giving to Robinson, who has been an ideal citizen, contributing millions to the Alamo City.

Spurs set to go south of the border

CHICAGO - It’s official. The Spurs are heading south next season.

Straight through customs.

For the first time in franchise history, the Spurs will play a regular-season game in Mexico when they take on the Los Angeles Clippers on Dec. 12 at Mexico City’s Palacio de los Deportes. San Antonio played preseason games in Mexico in 1994 and '95.

“It’s a road game for us - (the Clippers’) home game - but we’re pretty familiar with the operations,” Spurs executive vice president of business operations Russ Bookbinder said. “The people down there are familiar with us. They knew David (Robinson), and they’ll know Tim (Duncan).”

Houston’s 108-106 victory over Dallas on Dec. 6, 1997, at Palacio de los Deportes was the NBA’s first regular-season venture into Mexico. The game drew 20,635, the country’s largest crowd ever for a basketball game.

“Mexico City is the media center of the country, so that’s obviously good coverage for us,” Bookbinder said. “You can’t measure the impact in dollars and cents; we could do that better if the game were in Monterrey. But it will be very good for the name of San Antonio.”

OCESA Presenta, the organization that operates the Palacio de los Deportes under concession from the Mexican government, will act as the local promoter for the game. From 1992-96, OCESA Presenta handled a series of preseason games known as the NBA Challenge.

The Spurs lost to Seattle in the 1994 NBA Challenge championship. They beat Washington the next year in a preseason game in Mexico.

“As the NBA and the Mexican basketball community work together to increase the popularity of the sport, this annual celebration has become the centerpiece of a basketball event calendar that now stretches across the nation,” said Rob Levine, the NBA’s vice president and managing director for Latin America.

Rivers in, Blackman sorta out with Spurs

There will be some changes in the Spurs’ television broadcasting crew next season.

Former Spurs guard and broadcaster Doc Rivers is expected to return and do the majority of the telecasts as a color commentator. He will take the place of Rolando Blackman, who worked most games last season.

Blackman still may do some games when Rivers is fulfilling his obligations with TNT.

Play-by-play announcer Greg Papa is expected to return, but he will not be doing all of the television broadcasts.

“We plan on Greg coming back; we haven’t spoken to anyone else about that position,” team vice president Lawrence Payne said Tuesday. “Greg’s wife will have twins in December and he has some other commitments, so he won’t do some of the games. I would say he won’t do some of the pay-per-view games but will do the away games and Fox Sports games.”

Papa has a three-year contract, reportedly with an out after the first year.

“We told Rolando that we wanted Rivers and advised Rolando to pursue other possibilities,” Payne said. “We will need a third man to fill in when Doc cannot make it; Rolando may do some of those.”

Mark Jones from NBA Inside reportedly has called the Spurs about doing some of the color commentary.

Blackman is working at his Backcourt Aces basketball camp with former teammate Derek Harper.

“Lawrence told me that they are offering Doc the chance to be in the broadcast booth for a long time,” he said. "I’d like to do some games for the Spurs but I’ll look at some other opportunities. I’ve already had a lot of calls, both regarding television and other business ventures.

“I appreciated the opportunity the Spurs gave me and I enjoyed working with the organization and the team. They may not want me back, but I’m in the mode of waiting to see what they want to do.”

Papa and Blackman replaced the team of Ron Thulin and Coby Dietrick after the 1996-97 season.

Thulin had done the play-by-play for one season.

Pay-per-Paragon deal sticks it to consumers

Now that the Spurs’ season is over and Paragon has settled its debate over the Catholic channel, I suppose it’s all right to bring up a tender TV topic that’s been rubbing me raw.

On at least one occasion and, if memory serves, two times, a Spurs’ playoff game was shown live on the Turner network or one of the other channels offered by Paragon cable.

Even though more than 25,000 tickets were sold here, one game was blacked out by Paragon and / or the Spurs. It was blacked out locally and offered on pay-per-view for a fat fee.

How can that be done? Why did we allow that to happen?

It’s understandable that, through an agreement with NBA bosses, games presented on the four free networks, CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox, can be blacked out when they’re not sold out or for whatever reason the home team desires.

The only cost to viewers to watch regular programs on those networks is consumed by commercials.

But it’s an entirely different ballgame with cable outfits like Paragon.

We pay for their programs. It costs a bunch to get a bunch of different cable channels. On top of that, most also pile on commercials.

So how can they decide to yank one away from us – one that’s included every month on our bill – just because they want to charge us an extra $29 or $30 to offer the game on pay-per-view?

Now if that cable is not showing the game anywhere else, then it’s fine for it and the Spurs to charge whatever they can get regardless of how many tickets have been purchased.

But when it’s piped all across the nation on cable XYZ, free of any extra charge as usual, then nobody should have the right to black out cable XYZ on my TV set unless they plan to give me, and everyone who pays for that cable, refunds on our monthly statements.

These cable lightweights are getting greedy and trying to play the same game as the big boys with real networks.

But we don’t get monthly bills from the four big networks, and Paragon seems to dig deeper into our pockets every six months.

Fine, we all understand inflation. But when I pay for something, I want the product. And I don’t want somebody to tell me that, even though I pay for cable XYZ, I can’t see what it’s offering all over the nation next Monday without paying an extra $30.

It doesn’t really matter to me which side is more responsible, Paragon or the Spurs.

From here it seems almost certain that there’s enough blame for the two outfits to share.

Still, I tend to drop the heavier load of blame and shame on Paragon. If that company isn’t making profits by the barrel, then somebody might want to check its bookkeeping department.

On the other hand, it’s my guess that just two or three Spurs players are paid more each season than the entire Paragon payroll. The Spurs are struggling to keep their financial heads above water. And the situation promises to get worse before it gets better.

The whole point is, I don’t think Paragon has the right to black out any show on one of its cable channels we pay to watch, regardless of whether the Spurs, the NBA or Michael Jordan himself says it’s OK.

I’m aware that on occasions in the past some of the major networks’ games and shows have been scratched locally and replaced with old movies or homemade specials. That reddens a lot of faces.

But nobody pays anything to watch any of those network shows. It’s a different story with the cables.

Olajuwon trade talk: real, or just a dream?

This might be remembers as the summer when some sacred cows were reduced to just steaks.

First, the league was rifled by rumors that the Spurs were actually listening to calls about David Robinson instead of greeting those calls with laughter, a shake of the head and a resounding hangup.

Now we’ve been hearing that the Rockets actually were fielding a few queries about the redoubtable Hakeem Olajuwon.

Absolutely not, said Coach Rudy Tomjanovich, the same man who scratched his head in wonder when asked about all the trade talk surrounding then-Raptor Damon Stoudamire before February. The talk about Olajuwon never reached the Robinson crescendo, and many league observers insist the Rockets never would test the wrath of Houstonites by trading the popular center.

Speculation is the Rockets were simply trying to send a not-so-oblique message to Olajuwon, whom they feared was not in the proper frame of mind to continue to rehab his knee. Olajuwon skipped town without taking his EKG for his irregular heartbeat or MRI for his right knee.

Atlanta declined to be left out of the furor. Insiders say the Hawks passed out the word that Dikembe Mutomobo would be available to a team willing to pick up the remaining three years of is five-year, $56 million deal. The report is Atlanta management figures that’s too much room on the cap for a one-way player.

But that makes little sense. The Hawks desperately need Mutombo or a player of equal caliber in the paint, and that’s the going rate for such a chap.

Sir Charles lobbies for KJ: You may recall a few years ago that Charles Barkley and Kevin Johnson were teammates but far from the best of friends.

Time and new teams do change many emotions. Barkley is campaigning to convince Johnson, out now from Phoenix, to join the Rockets at point guard. The Rockets want to get younger, but another elder willing to dispense the wisdom of experience and also exhibit winning performances can’t hurt during the closing of the window of opportunity on Barkley and Olajuwon.

Houston is expected to have between $8 million and $10 million to spend on free agents.

Spurs eye shooters: The Spurs are doing what is now known as due diligence and ushering in free agents and draft hopefuls for look-sees. Yugoslavian free agent 6-foot-4 shooting guard Slaven Milwaukee, he apparently hit 47 of 50 three-pointers.

The Spurs also brought in 6-4 Cory Carr from Texas Tech, 6-5 Corey Benjamin from Oregon State, and 6-3 Bryce Drew from Valparaiso.

All the tools: The upcoming draft’s top center, Michael Olowokandi, figures he acquired a lot of his agility because of the differing perspective of European and American thinking.

Olowokandi never had played 5-on-5 basketball, or even 3-on-3, before arrive at Pacific 3 1/2 years ago. But he was an amazing 7-0 athlete who had attended an English boarding school and set national age-group records in the long jump and triple jump. He claimed he ran a 4.6 40-yard dash in a workout- and was disappointed. He said he can run a sub-4.5.

A Grizzly affair: The Grizzlies can be very bearish before and during draft night. They have the no.2 pick, and, since many figure the clippers will grab Mike Bibby, they hold the potential rights to Olowokandi.

But Vancouver already has Bryant Reeves, so it will be sifting through offers from teams drooling ver the prospects of landing a skilled middle man.

Toronto, for sure, is in line and would offer Doug Christie and its No.4 pick. The Grizzlies then would love to pick Paul Pierce. But the Nuggets stand in their way with the No.3 choice, leaving Vancouver with a choice of Raef LaFrentz, Antawn Jamison or Vince Carter.

Nuggets vice president Dan Issel also cherishes Olowokandi, but he has no players with which to entice Vancouver.

"Nobody like anybody on our roster, " Issel said. “That’s how we open every conversation: ‘Well, you really don’t have anybody we like.’ I mean, it’s pretty pitiful when a team like Toronto, who won 16 games, tells you there’s nobody on your roster they want.”

The Grizzlies do seem to like Bryant Stith, but so does Issel.

Team USA decides to do without NBA players

A group of 12 NBA stars, including rookie of the year Tim Duncan of the Spurs, can cancel plans to play ball in Greece this summer.

USA Basketball has decided to dump the NBA’s select team for the FIBA World Championship tournament, scheduled to open July 29 in Athens, Greece.

Players such as Duncan, Grant Hill and Gary Payton will be replaced in the wake of stalled negotiations on the NBA collective bargaining agreement.

The players, facing a lockout by NBA owners as early as July 1, decided last week that they would withhold a commitment to play in the summer tournament until the labor issues were settled.

In response, USA Basketball elected Tuesday to go forward without them.

USA Basketball executive director Warren Brown expressed disappointment at the circumstances that led to the decision to scuttle the all-star team.

“We are extremely disappointed and regret that this action had to be taken, but training camp for our team starts July 8, and we simply cannot wait until July 2 for a decision before we begin the process of fielding a replacement team,” Brown said Tuesday night in New York.

Brown said that when it became apparent the players might boycott the championships, USA Basketball asked each of the players to reaffirm his commitment.

“When no player reaffirmed, then we received the letter from the (National Basketball Players Association) that resulted in the committee’s action for an alternate plan,” Brown said. “USA Basketball is not part of the (labor) issue and holds no influence. We feel we are being held hostage in the situation.”

Duncan declined comment on the matter through his friend and spokesman, Marc Scott.

“I don’t want to put words in his mouth,” Scott said.

The decision to drop the NBA players was made by the eight- member Executive Committee. Friday was the original deadline for submitting 24-man rosters to FIBA, the international governing body that runs the World Championships.

Brown said FIBA realized the emergency nature of the situation and said it would work with USA Basketball to make sure the best team is chosen.

USA Basketball will invite at least 24 players to a training camp, and those invited will be current college players, CBA players and American professionals playing abroad.

Former Spurs forward Dominique Wilkins, David Rivers and Byron Scott have been mentioned as players who might be asked to try out.

No roster will be final until 72 hours before the tournament begins, but Brown said Tuesday’s action closed the door on the participation of NBA players even if the labor issue is settled.

The 12 NBA players on the U.S. team were Duncan, Hill (Detroit), Payton and Vin Baker (Seattle), Tim Hardaway (Miami), Terrell Brandon (Milwaukee), Kevin Garnett and Tom Gugliotta (Minnesota), Allan Houston (New York), Christian Laettner (Atlanta), Glen Rice (Charlotte) and Chris Webber (Sacramento).

“I’m sure our players are disappointed by USA Basketball’s decision,” union director Billy Hunter said in a statement. "We think the decision is premature in light of the fact that USA Basketball is permitted to submit a 24-man roster to FIBA that doesn’t have to be reduced to 12 players until July 26.

“The players wanted to exhaust every possible opportunity to participate in the World Championships, but the decision was clearly taken out of their hands by the actions of USA Basketball.”

Rudy Tomjanovich of the Houston Rockets, who still will coach the U.S. team, said he will work to win the gold medal.

“I am obviously disappointed I won’t be coaching a team comprised of NBA players in the World Championships, however, as the makeup of the team changes drastically, it won’t change my attitude one bit. It is an honor to coach and represent your country,” he said.

NBA to consider summer moratorium in labor dispute

NEW YORK - An NBA lockout seemed less certain Thursday, with deputy commissioner Russ Granik saying a summer- long moratorium is possible even without a new labor contract by July 1.

“We said we’d consider it, but only in the context of whether it was good or not for the bargaining process,” Granik said, one day after the players’ union proposed a moratorium as a way of restoring 12 NBA players to the world championship roster.

The league and the union have made little progress in almost two months of talks, and both sides had toughened in anticipation of a lockout after the labor agreement expires June 30. The sides are scheduled to meet again Monday.

“This is a good move,” Spurs point guard Avery Johnson said. "The main thing is that we have too much good out there - the television rations for Game 7 was the highest in history. Fans love the game; they are optimistic about the players despite some of the negative things said about a few. Why mess all that up?

“I try to learn from successful people and situations and also from some failures, like what happened to baseball after they went on strike. I don’t think the emotions for baseball are the same even today.”

Johnson said the moratorium also will help the Spurs conduct some business before any potential lockout. “Maybe they can conduct some camps, bring in the free agent they are looking for,” he said.

Granik’s comments were the first by a league official indicating that a lockout may not be the best tactic. The league and players have a history of labor moratoriums.

“The players and the league have to put pride aside, not negotiate in sense of winning or losing but what’s best for league and fans,” Johnson said.

“Traditionally, you have a moratorium because you wanted to have bargaining without doing any damage,” Granik told the Associated Press. “But if we’re going to do a moratorium, it’s because we’re going to want to do a moratorium - not because it has anything to do with USA Basketball.”

The world championships became embroiled in the league’s labor troubles when the 12 NBA players, including the Spurs’ Tim Duncan, told USA Basketball, the national federation, they would not play in the tournament July 29-Aug. 9 in Athens, Greece, if a lockout was in effect.

USA Basketball responded by dropping the 12 players and saying they would be replaced by CBA players and Americans playing overseas.

The Greek basketball federation and FIBA, the sport’s world-governing body, were angered by the move.

Borislav Stankovic, FIBA’s secretary general, has given USA Basketball an extension until the end of the month for submitting a roster.

“We have agreed with Mr. Stankovic to a joint plan of action in order to fight this unpleasant development in the hope that in the end we will manage to change it,” said Giorgos Vassilakopoulos of the Greek Basketball Federation. “I have the impression that the American federation’s decision was very hasty.”

The NBA and USA Basketball are separate entities, but the players see them as inextricably linked because Granik serves as president and WNBA commissioner Val Ackerman sits on the executive board.

Fatherhood no game to Spurs star

As Father’s Day dawns, Spurs center David Robinson will revel in another episode – live, in his on home – of My Three sons.

“It’ll just be a quiet day,” he said. “Nothing special. Just quiet family time.”

That is, it will be as quiet as you would expect from a family with three kids under age 6.

In spite of the potential for a ruckus, Robinson should have time today to reflect on his life with the little fellows.

“They are,” he said, “my No. 1 priority.”

In a wide-ranging interview last week, Robinson talked about his philosophy of fatherhood and how he picked up some good parenting tips from his own mom and dad.

He also discussed how his children have given him feelings of great joy, wonder and fulfillment.

At the same time, Robinson says he often has felt humbled by the responsibility of seeing that the three grow up safe, secure and happy.

It’s a task that he rated as much more difficult than being franchise center and team co-captain.

“Fatherhood is, by far, the tougher job,” he said. “The responsibility is huge. You realize that you are impacting three lives. You are trying to set a standard…, I really take it very seriously. It’s fun. But it’s also very challenging.”

“They are all so different,” Robinson said. "David is very intelligent, very sensitive. He understands people and he tries to play on your emotions.

“If he wants something, he’ll say something like, ‘Dad, I’ve wanted this all my life.’ Corey is more like a bull. If he wants something, he comes out and says so. Justin just wants to be held. They’re all happy. I enjoy seeing happy kids.”

Likewise, Robinson can’t bear the thought of a child who isn’t happy or healthy. He said he can’t comprehend how former pro football player Boomer Esiason feels today. Esiason’s 7-year-old son is afflicted with cystic fibrosis, a disease that often leads to death by age 30.

“I can’t imagine it,” Robinson said. “I was watching the movie, ‘Titanic,’ and tears welled up in my eyes in that one scene when the two kids were in the bottom of the ship and the lady was saying a poem to them. You knew they were going to die. I thought about my kids, and it broke me up all inside.”

Fortunately for Robinson, all his kids are fine. He said he never has had to deal with a major health problem with any of them, although Corey came out relatively unscathed in a bizarre mishap last year.

One day, Robinson and his wife took their kids to a wildlife park near New Braunfels. Robinson had his son on his lap. A donkey looking for a food handout poked his head in the car window.

Suddenly, the donkey bit Corey’s thumb.

“I had looked away, and the donkey clamped down on Corey’s finger, right at the base of his thumb,” Robinson said. “Corey was screaming, and we were trying to get the donkey to let go. Fortunately, it did.”

There was no serious injury – only teeth marks in Corey’s tiny thumb. But Robinson cringes at the thought of what might have happened. It still leaves him weak.

“If something worse had happened, I couldn’t have forgiven myself,” he said.

Robinson says his parents tried to instill responsibility in him starting at a young age. They didn’t have too many rules, and there were no hard-and-fast guidelines. But Robinson, his younger brother and older sister knew when they strayed out of bounds.

As a 10-year-old in Virginia, Robinson learned right from wrong the hard way. Once, he swiped a piece of candy from a convenience store. His father, in response, took a sobbing David back to the store and made him admit to the clerk what had happened.

When they went home, he got a spanking from his dad.

“I appreciated that,” Robinson said. “I knew my mom and dad didn’t want me in trouble. I knew they cared about me. It made me understand there were consequences for my behavior. You see some people who never learn respect for authority.”

Robinson will spank when he deems it necessary, but he said he never does it when he is mad.

“I always have them on my lap,” he said. “And I always talk to them before and I talk to them after.”

Robinson said he has told his kids about his convenience store caper and the resulting discipline.

“Now David (Jr.) talks about it all the time,” Robinson said. “He’ll say, ‘You sinned, daddy. You took that piece of candy one time.’ But they need to know… that you’re not perfect. They also need to know that you might make mistakes as a parent, too.”

Robinson doesn’t have to worry about financial security, as most parents do. But the life of a high-profile NBA player and father has its pitfalls and drawbacks.

From October through May, a Spurs player’s home often is the road. It’s a hotel room. Room service. Long-distance phone calls to the wife and kids. Robinson said the end of the season always is a bittersweet time for his family.

“It’s funny,” he said. “It comes to the end of the season and I hear, ‘Dad, I hope you guys lose so we can go on vacation.’ That’s their perspective. Because at the end of the season, they know, they get Daddy all day.”

No Duncans await Spurs in this draft

A year ago, there was little drama or intrigue in San Antonio leading into the NBA Draft.

The Spurs, by virtue of a stunning win in the lottery, held the No. 1 pick when one of those magical, once-in-a-decade-type players was available.

Last summer, the question was not, “Who will you select?” It was more like, “How do you think Tim Duncan will like the Mexican food?”

This year, Spurs fans will wring their hands for an hour or longer before they discover the identity of their newest player.

When the draft unfolds at 6:30 Wednesday night, the Spurs - barring a last-minute trade - will pick at No. 24 in the first round.

They will also have the 52nd overall choice, or the 23rd selection on the second round, to bolster a team that won 56 games and was bounced out of the playoffs in the second round.

“We’re trying to do what every team in the mid-teens and later tries to do - just do the best job you can in determining talent and potential, knowing that it doesn’t happen very often that you get a player,” Spurs coach and general manager Gregg Popovich said.

By all estimations, there are no Duncans in the entire draft field - much less that sort of impact player at No. 24. The Spurs merely are hoping to find someone worthy of a three-year guaranteed contract, which automatically goes to all first-rounders.

Predicting who the Spurs will select in the first round is a perilous business.

“There are 15 players or more whom we’re considering, in different scenarios, that could be there,” Spurs scout R.C. Buford said.

Even though the Spurs could use more perimeter shooting and better perimeter defensive play, team management said it’s not certain that the first-round pick will be a guard.

“We’re concerned about getting an NBA player,” said Sam Schuler, the Spurs’ director of player personnel. "Obviously, our perceived need is a perimeter player. But at the point where we are, there’s a question of whether they can play (on the elite level).

“We’re keeping our eye on perimeter players, but we’re really all over the board.”

The list of candidates probably includes guards Miles Simon and Michael Dickerson of Arizona, Ricky Davis (Iowa), Corey Benjamin (Oregon State), Felipe Lopez (St. John’s), Toby Bailey (UCLA) and Bryce Drew (Valparaiso).

A pure point guard, Tyronn Lue of Nebraska, might be a prospect as a backup to veteran Avery Johnson.

Schuler said it’s also possible that big men such Baylor’s Brian Skinner, Indiana’s Andrae Patterson or UCLA’s Jelani McCoy could be available.

Small forward possibilities might include Duke’s Roshown McLeod, Georgia Tech’s Matt Harpring, UCLA’s J.R. Henderson or 18-year-old New Jersey high school standout Al Harrington.

“I’d like for us to get in a good athlete who can run the floor and just help out with his physical ability,” Spurs center David Robinson said. “It’d be great to get a great shooter. But you just don’t know. They might be a shooter in college, but they might not be in the NBA. So I think it’s best just to get a good athlete.”

Various college and professional basketball officials have insisted that Dickerson, Drew, McCoy, Benjamin, Patterson and Skinner all could be gone by the time the Spurs pick at No. 24.

If that is the case, Bailey said he hopes the Spurs will remember his name.

“I’d love to play there,” Bailey said in a telephone interview from his home in Los Angeles. “The guys on that team all look like fine citizens, and they have a lot of veterans. With Tim Duncan and David Robinson and the rest of those guys, I think they’re a team capable of winning a championship.”

Bailey said he worked out in San Antonio for the Spurs’ coaching staff three weeks ago.

He was joined in the session by Benjamin and Davis, two players who applied for early entry in the draft. Bailey said coaches gave him no indication what they thought of him as a player.

“I don’t think they let anyone know whether they liked them or not,” said Bailey, who as a freshman sparked the Bruins to the 1995 NCAA championship with 26 points in the title game against Arkansas.

The draft is the first opportunity for the Spurs to upgrade their talent level this summer. Next comes the free-agent signing period, which will start on July 1, barring a lockout.

It’s more likely that the Spurs will land a more polished player in free-agency because of the nature of the draft, which is considered average at best.

“It depends on who is available,” Buford said. “But you’ll probably have a player who is more ready to play tomorrow in free agency.”

The Spurs said they have held talks about trades. But that option isn’t viewed as likely. If the Spurs find a deal they like, it could involve reserve center Will Perdue in a package with the draft picks.

History has shown that the Spurs have been inclined to trade late first-round picks. The current management team drafted forward Bill Curley with the 22nd pick in 1994 and traded him immediately in a deal that returned Sean Elliott to San Antonio.in the Charles Smith deal.

In the last 13 years, the 24th pick has produced one All-Star (Golden State’s Latrell Sprewell) and other players who turned out to be starters, including Sam Cassell (New Jersey Nets), Derek Fisher (Los Angeles Lakers) and Rick Fox (Lakers).

NBA teams hope to find a gem in mediocre draft

It’s not often that college boys will willingly spruce themselves up and happily, albeit nervously, get ready to meet their blind dates.

But that will happen Wednesday night when the nation’s hot-shot basketball players will pour into General Motors Place in Vancouver, British Columbia, and learn which NBA teams will be their dancing partners for the next several years.

It’s the annual NBA draft, the shindig where the league’s worst teams expect to walk away with the prime partners and hope next year to be in position to smirk at those who are in their shoes this night.

Fortunes can alter dramatically.

Look at the Spurs with David Robinson and Tim Duncan, Los Angeles Lakers with Magic Johnson, and Boston Celtics with Larry Bird and Kevin McHale.

Look, too, at the futures turned bleak - the Golden State Warriors with Joe Barry Carroll, Sacramento Kings with Pervis Ellison, New Jersey Nets with Derrick Coleman, and Portland Trail Blazers with LaRue Martin.

This draft is considered so-so by the league’s experts, who say the talent level drops off precipitously after the first nine players. They gripe because there is no Duncan- like player available this year.

But that won’t stop them from extolling the virtues of their picks come Wednesday. And it shouldn’t. The lucky teams can come away with wonderful partners deep in the draft such as Michael Smith, No. 35 in 1994; Nick Van Exel, No. 37 in '93; and Bobby Phills, No. 45 in '91.

Remember also that Hall of Famer Willis Reed was the first pick in the second round. Of course, that was back when there were only nine teams in the league.

Detroit Pistons vice president Rick Sund sees the cup half empty: “Everybody knows this is not a good draft,” he said. “We’re not going to get anything that can help us.”

There’s skepticism: “You never know, (Los Angeles Clippers owner) Donald Sterling may wake up Wednesday morning and figure it’s cheaper to pay a draftee than a veteran, pick (Michael) Olowokandi, and let Ike Austin go in free agency,” one wag said.

There’s excessive paranoia: Milwaukee brought in 38 players for pre-draft workouts, Houston 30.

There’s head-scratching: “From 15 on, you can’t determine who’ll be there. The draft has been a lot clearer in previous years,” Charlotte Hornets vice president Bob Bass said.

There’s trade talk aplenty:

The Vancouver Grizzlies are in the eye of the hurricane, stealing that honor from the Clippers, who, despite having the No. 1 pick, again take the back seat.

“I feel we will see some different proposals beginning next week,” Grizzlies general manager Stu Jackson said. “But generally, those deals don’t get done unless they knock your socks off.”

The Denver Nuggets, who’d love Olowokandi, have offered Bobby Jackson or Tony Battie and their No. 3 pick. No luck. The Grizzlies wanted Bryant Stith - and Denver said no, so far.

Vancouver listened to the Philadelphia 76ers’ offer of Tim Thomas and the No. 8 pick and laughed, but then was rejected when it tried to pull Doug Christie out of Toronto.

There was a slight breeze of a tale of the Lakers dealing Elden Campbell and Eddie Jones for the Grizzlies’ pick. Jackson’s eyes brightened at that one, but few give it credence.

Milwaukee has been involved in draft-related trades the past three years, and General Manager Bob Weinhauer admits he has talked to every team ahead of the Bucks about some notion involving their Nos. 9 and 19 picks and moving up.

Milwaukee apparently offered the Raptors both picks and Andrew Lang for No. 4, but that was before Toronto got Kevin Willis.

Weinhauer insists that he never has talked to any team about his point guard, Terrell Brandon.

The New York Knicks do not have a first-round pick. But they would like to get one, and they’re shopping Chris Mills, Chris Childs, John Starks and Buck Williams. Good luck. The New Yorkers reportedly would like to give Jason Williams a chance, but it’s doubtful they can get that high into the draft.

The Phoenix Suns will consider trying to get a first-round pick to go after one of two Slovenian big men, 7-foot-1 Radoslav Nesterovic or 6-11 Vladimir Stepanija.

The Warriors at No. 5 are talking to anybody who can take Latrell Sprewell off their hands. They would be willing to move down in the draft and pick up Bryce Drew or Tyrone Lue.

Several teams such as Boston and Charlotte are considering simply trading away their picks for veteran players.

Portland is trying to get its hands on a first-round pick in order to land Williams. Despite what Damon Stoudamire says in the papers about returning to Portland, the Blazers aren’t taking any chances.

the Tim Duncan factor - This year’s draft crop not expected to match last year’s high yield

The Spurs are pretty canny when it comes to the lottery.

Their performances in the overall draft through the years might not be overly impressive.

But give 'em a lottery and watch 'em go. They got into it in 1987, won it and picked David Robinson. They were back in 1989. They didn’t win it that year but the No. 1 choice turned out to be Pervis Ellison. No great loss. The Spurs picked the better player at No. 3 - Sean Elliott.

A return to the lottery wasn’t forecast until a storm of injuries hit Robinson, Elliott, Charles Smith and Chuck Person during the 1996-97 season, with the exclamation point on Robinson.

Naturally, the Spurs won the 1997 ping-pong game. And naturally they picked Tim Duncan.

So during Wednesday’s draft, the Spurs’ brass can gaze at the eligible draftees, smirk and say, “We have Duncan, you don’t.”

The lineup of players dressed in suits at General Motors Place in Vancouver, British Columbia, will sparkle with some bright names - Michael Olowokandi, Mike Bibby, Paul Pierce, Antawn Jamison, Raef LaFrentz.

A true star may emerge from this group, or from perhaps either Vince Carter or Robert Traylor. High schooler Rashard Lewis or German forward Dirk Nowitzki may romp through the 1998-99 campaign.

But vice presidents and general managers, skeptics all, already have indicated their gut reactions to the draft: they’re uncertain over the true value of any player.

The No. 1 pick is projected to be Arizona point guard Bibby - maybe. Clippers GM Elgin Baylor has been silent and coy for weeks, raising speculation that the stepbrothers to the Lakers might just scramble matters by selecting Olowokandi, the center from Pacific.

Such wavering was non-existent when the Spurs had their shot at the No. 1.

Bibby has been likened to the Suns’ Jason Kidd. He has tremendous court vision and he’s a Patton-like general. Kidd can be a stunner, but he also already has been traded once and his jumper is sour.

Olowokandi is athletic - he runs like a deer, has innate basketball skills and possesses a general graciousness of manner.

Yet, we heard little about him during most of his three collegiate years, and the fame of the University of Pacific didn’t quite reach the Atlantic during his stay.

The Grizzlies draft second and they are using Olowokandi, becoming known as the Kandi Man, to attract deals that will result in them drafting Kansas’ Paul Pierce. True, the Grizzlies already have center Bryant Reeves, but one would figure that if Olowokandi were indeed another Robinson, he would soon be suiting up before Canadian audiences.

Pierce (6-foot-7) has climbed steadily in the draft throughout the year, mainly because of the lack of other candidates. He was a small forward during his college stay, but the Grizzlies, already armed with Shareef Abdur-Rahim, will put Pierce in the backcourt. Pierce attended high school in the shadow of The Forum in Inglewood, Calif., but he’s not armed with a jumper like Byron Scott’s and the Grizzlies will be fortunate indeed if his penetrating skills rival those of Eddie Jones.

Pierce’s jumper will be tested quickly, especially from the NBA three-point range.

Kansas’ LaFrentz actually held onto the No. 1 spot on draft lists as this season began - he fell as Olowokandi rose and underclassmen began to signal they would be entering the draft.

LaFrentz is listed at 6-11 but anybody familiar with college measuring sticks might be smart to lop off an inch or two, just to be safe. LaFrentz might be able to play a few minutes but he’ll be shifted to power forward in the NBA.

Scouts already are quibbling about his lower-body strength and he will be introduced almost immediately to the team strength and conditioning coach. LaFrentz will discover the need for this training when he finds himself sliding backward under the pressure of the likes of Karl Malone.

North Carolina’s Jamison (6-9) picked up a parcel of individual awards last season, including the country’s player of the year. Now nobody in the league knows how well he’ll be able to adapt to the next level.

He nailed foes with his powerful back-to-the-basket moves deep in the paint in college. And he befuddled defenders with his remarkably swift putbacks.

But Jamison will have to move over to small forward now, and he doesn’t come equipped with an outside shot or strong footwork away from the bucket. His ability to defend on the perimeter also is questionable.

The league worries that he’s a ’ tweener, unable to find a spot at either power and small forward.

So, sit back and gloat Spurs fans. San Antonio had it sweet last June. This time the Spurs’ braintrust just has to find a reasonably solid player who might be able to contribute some from the bench.

On the outside, looking grim Lack of pure shooters leaves Spurs to consider swingman with 24th pick

The Spurs would love to emerge from tonight’s NBA Draft with a shooter who could stroke jumpers from somewhere out on Durango Street, or at least from Parking Lot A, near the Alamodome.

But with the 24th and 52nd overall picks, the Spurs are going into the proceedings with a more realistic attitude.

The shooter they desire probably won’t be available - at least, not at No. 24.

“In this draft, it would be perfect for us if there was a shooter who could play the three (small forward) and the two (shooting guard), or a shooter who could swing between the two and the one (point guard),” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “It would be fantastic to get that type of player. Unfortunately, such a player doesn’t exist (at No. 24). We have a much better chance of getting a player like that in free agency.”

The draft will be televised on TNT from Vancouver, British Columbia, starting at 6:30 tonight.

A persistent rumor on Tuesday was that the Spurs had drawn up a series of scenarios where their most likely first choice would end up being made from a group of swing players - athletic big guards who also could play the small- forward spot.

Projected late first-round swingmen include Minnesota’s Sam Jacobson and Iowa’s Ricky Davis.

“The trouble is, the draft is so fuzzy, from nine and 10 on down, nobody knows who’s going to be there,” said Sam Schuler, Spurs director of player personnel.

Prominent big guards available might include Miles Simon of Arizona and Felipe Lopez of St. John’s.

Small forwards who could fall to the Spurs could be Georgia Tech’s Matt Harpring and Cincinnati’s Ruben Patterson.

If Bryce Drew of Valparaiso is still available, he might be hard to pass up. Drew is one of the best shooters in the draft and could back up Avery Johnson at point guard.

Without naming names, Schuler said the Spurs would be picking a player largely on a vision of what they believe he can be in two or three years.

“Where we are in the draft, it’s not so much what the player is now,” he said. “It’s what they grow into.”

Popovich continued to insist that it would even be possible the Spurs could take a big man.

“You are guided by what’s available,” Popovich said. “There may be big guys who have a better chance to be a player than (a guard or small forward). If you do that, you take the big guy, and figure out the rest later.”

He said the Spurs are leaning against taking any of the high school players available - Rashard Lewis, Al Harrington or Korleone Young.

Harrington, a small forward from Elizabeth, N.J., might be available late in the first round.

“We’ve had a lot of discussion about that,” Popovich said. “But look at Kobe (Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers). He’s still trying to figure out how to get on the court. And none of these (players) are close to him (in talent). So it might behoove us to go with someone who could help us more right away.”

The draft is expected to be the last order of business for the league until ownership imposes a lockout on the players. The action could come as early as July 1, which normally is the first day of business for the new season.

A lockout would freeze all free-agent signings and trade activity until a new labor agreement is reached.

When the owners and players firm up a new collective-bargaining agreement, the Spurs will resume building their team.

Even though the Spurs are over the salary cap and will face restrictions on how much they can pay free agents, they are expected to be active.

“The best talent, free-agent wise, is at one (point guard) and four (power forward),” Popovich said. “There are some at the three but most of the ones with shooting ability are at one and four.”

Among their veterans, the Spurs are confronted with serious questions at small forward and shooting guard. Both guards Vinny Del Negro and Jaren Jackson are free agents.

Nobody knows what kind of player Sean Elliott will be after he has undergone surgeries on both quadriceps knee tendons in the last 16 months. Chuck Person, hampered by back problems, is considering retirement.

Despite widespread speculation that Del Negro has played his last game as a Spur, Popovich said he has “no reason to believe” that Del Negro will take an offer from another team.

Popovich also said Elliott’s knees are “responding very well” to continued rehabilitation. He expects Elliott to regain his job as the starting small forward.

“I don’t waste any time trying to figure out if he’s going to be 100 percent or 80 percent,” he said. “The only thing Sean can do is work as hard as he can.”

Spurs deal for point guard Grizzlies’ Daniels comes to S.A. for pick, Herrera

Point guard Antonio Daniels, a first-year disappointment with the Vancouver Grizzlies, is on his way to the Spurs in a trade completed during the NBA Draft on Wednesday night.

To get Daniels, the Spurs gave up veteran forward Carl Herrera and the rights to the 24th pick in the first round - guard Felipe Lopez from St. John’s University.

Later in the evening, the Spurs took guard Derrick Dial from Eastern Michigan in the second round.

“We told (Daniels) we were fired up to get him, and he told us we weren’t half as fired up as he was,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said.

Daniels confirmed his excitement in a telephone interview late Wednesday night.

“Oh, man,” he said. “I feel like I’ve been drafted again. I want the season to start tomorrow.”

The Grizzlies made Daniels their first-round draft choice last summer, picking him with the fourth overall selection.

He never lived up to billing, averaging 7.8 points and 4.5 assists in 74 games for one of the worst teams in the league.

The Spurs will try to resurrect his career in a more stable environment, where they won 56 games and advanced to the second round of the playoffs last season.

“Antonio Daniels is a hell of a player,” Popovich said. “He was the No. 4 overall pick last year. When you have a chance to get someone with that type of ability, you jump on it. We were thrilled we were able to pull that off.”

The trade began to take shape when the Grizzlies drafted point guard Mike Bibby with the second overall selection. Immediately, the two teams started talking.

Later in the first round, Popovich said it was apparent that they would not get any of the players they wanted in the draft. With the 24th selection, they took Lopez for the Grizzlies.

The deal wasn’t announced until after the Spurs selected Dial in the second round.

“I wasn’t surprised I was traded, no,” Daniels said. “Me and Mike Bibby have the same agent, David Falk. I knew that when Mike was drafted, one of us had to go. It’s a business.”

Daniels is expected to play off the bench behind Spurs veteran Avery Johnson next season. But it is evident that the Spurs believe that Daniels could be running the show two or three few years from now.

“I feel he has a huge upside,” Popovich said. “He’s got all the skills to be a success. He didn’t achieve that in Vancouver, but we’ll start from scratch.”

Herrera recently completed his third season with the Spurs. At one time, he had been penciled in to be the team’s starter at power forward. But he languished on the bench for most of his time in the Alamo City.

“Carl did a really good job for us,” Popovich said. “It was very tough for him, with the injuries he had. He handled himself with a lot of class.”

Herrera wasn’t immediately available for comment.

Daniels, who played four years at Bowling Green University, said he thinks his game fits in with the Spurs’ style.

“I think the franchise is headed in a positive direction, no question about that,” Daniels said. “I love their style of play. They’ve got big guys who can run. They get the ball and go.”

Even though most of Daniels’ first season in Vancouver was a frustration, he enjoyed his moments. He scored a season high 23 points against the Phoenix Suns in April. He produced 13 points and eight assists in an overtime victory over Washington in February.

Daniels also went for 15 points and passed for nine assists against the Houston Rockets.

In college, he was the Mid-American Conference Player of the Year as a senior and a John Wooden All-American team finalist.

Dial, at 6-4, is a shooting guard who averaged 20.9 points per game for Eastern Michigan last season. He is a 47.9 percent shooter for his career, including 37.7 percent from three-point range.

Flipping Felipe for The Flop: Perfect trade?

The Spurs pulled off a trade that makes perfect sense. That could change them for a decade. That they needed.

Carl Herrera and Felipe Lopez for a point guard who - just a year ago - was seen as prime-time talent?

The Spurs should celebrate.

The Vancouver crowd did Wednesday, which is telling. If the Grizzlies faithful applaud the arrival of Amigo, then they’ve seen Daniels do some hideous things in public. What should make the Spurs flinch: Daniels shot about 40 percent, breaking down so badly he eventually lost time to a journeyman named Lee Mayberry.

If the lottery Grizzlies toss him away so freely, why should the Spurs want him?

Because of risk-reward. The Spurs had no room for Herrera, and no interest in what was left at the bottom of the first round. The Spurs came into the draft hoping one of four guys might drop to them (Michael Dickerson, Bryce Drew, Ricky Davis and Mirsad Turkcan).

The Rockets took three, Charlotte the other. The Spurs then saw nothing they liked, and thus saw the 24th pick as a burden. Would they be forced to give a three-year guaranteed deal to someone they didn’t want?

That’s why the Spurs always thought they would have a better chance of improving through free agency than they would through the draft. For all the hype of TNT, chances are no one drafted below the mid-first round will mean as much to a contending team as, say, Jaren Jackson was to the Spurs last year.

But then came a call from Vancouver. Having selected Mike Bibby, the Grizzlies were overstocked with point guards. You wonder how Vancouver fans really feel. Just a year ago they burned the fourth overall pick on a point guard, and there they were hosting the 1998 draft Wednesday, burning the second overall selection on another.

Everybody raved about Daniels last June. At 6-foot-4, with range and ball-handling skills, Daniels rose on everybody’s draft list. The Spurs rated him lower than where Vancouver took him, but Daniels still ranked as someone with lottery talent. That’s why gambling now on him makes so much sense. Could just one year have washed away all the promise?

The Spurs hadn’t run the full background check on him. Knowing they would take Tim Duncan last year, they didn’t have to. So when the offer came Wednesday night, the Spurs checked around to see if the gift wasn’t what it seemed. Did anyone know Daniels?

Duncan did. And when Duncan said he had hit it off with Daniels in international play, it took away a lot of doubt.

Another note about Duncan in June: When the Spurs worked out various draft prospects, only one Spur asked if he could watch. Duncan just observed. But if you are looking for signs that the man would like to stay in San Antonio, that qualifies.

But this isn’t about Duncan. It’s about timing. Daniels busted in Vancouver, all right. But he was also asked to lead a lottery team.

He won’t have to carry the Spurs; if anything, he can learn behind Avery Johnson, and probably play with him, too. He can dump the ball to the towers and take his time in their shadow. For all of Daniels’ sins this season: He still ended with a 2-to-1 assist-turnover ratio.

Daniels also will arrive like the free-agent prospects the Spurs prefer, hungry if not embarrassed. Dickerson, Drew, Davis and Turkcan will arrive as rookies.

And if his confidence returns? If he’s anything close to the fourth pick of the draft that he was a year ago? Then trades don’t come any better.

Dealing Spurs ready for more

Point guard Antonio Daniels is the first addition to the Spurs this off-season. He most certainly will not be the last.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, who acquired Daniels in a trade Wednesday night, is just getting started in revamping a team that won 56 games last season.

After the league settles its labor impasse, Popovich hopes to sign some free agents. He may make another trade. And he wants to bring back some of his own free agents, with all moves designed to give his club a better fighting chance in the playoffs next spring.

The Utah Jazz knocked out the Spurs 4-1 in the second round last month.

“It’s premature to say where we are now,” Popovich said Thursday. “I don’t know what our team looks like until we sign everybody. It just doesn’t make sense to make an evaluation on that now.”

For the sake of simplicity, Popovich agreed to analyze the state of the team based on the assumption that Sean Elliott will come back healthy and that the Spurs will be able to re- sign Vinny Del Negro, Jaren Jackson and Monty Williams.

“If we signed everybody and added a $1 million exception player - a shooter - we’d be a team that would be a little deeper and more talented,” he said. “The big key for next year is Sean Elliott. He’s the main key. But adding Antonio Daniels gives us more size and athleticism on the perimeter.”

In a deal completed during the NBA Draft, the Grizzlies traded Daniels to the Spurs in exchange for veteran forward Carl Herrera and the rights to the 24th overall pick, St. John’s guard Felipe Lopez.

Later, in the second round, the Spurs proved that it’s a small world when they selected Eastern Michigan guard Derrick Dial with the 52nd overall pick.

Dial and Daniels are friends and played against each other for three years in the Mid-American Conference. Daniels was the MAC Player of the Year in 1997 at Bowling Green before he was drafted fourth overall by the Grizzlies.

Even though Daniels was a disappointment in Vancouver, Popovich said he was “thrilled” with the chance to bring such a talented player along slowly behind veteran Avery Johnson.

“He has ability in all areas,” Popovich said. “We need to work with him and maximize his strengths. Maximizing strengths is important with a player. You have to figure out which buttons to push.”

Popovich declined to discuss why he thought Daniels, a long and athletic 6-foot-4 playmaker, didn’t work out on one of the worst teams in the league.

Players have been known to balk at trades to teams based in Canada. But Popovich said Herrera, a 31-year-old seven-year veteran with three years of service to the Spurs, plans to report.

Knee problems have affected both the 23-year-old Daniels and Herrera. Herrera, who averaged 2.9 points in 8.9 minutes last season, had both his patella tendons surgically repaired last month. But the trade won’t be called off because of health questions, Popovich said.

“The physicals were waived in both directions in order to get (the trade) done,” Popovich said.

Tendinitis in one of Daniels’ knees has been blamed for his subpar rookie season, during which he averaged 7.8 points and 4.5 assists. He hit 41.6 percent from the field and 21.2 percent on his three-pointers.

“I think (Daniels’) situation was unfortunate because his knee was troublesome for almost the entire year,” said David Falk, Daniels’ agent. “At some point it became psychological. He lost confidence a little bit.”

Falk spoke with the Vancouver media Thursday morning at a news conference introducing another of his clients, Mike Bibby. Daniels became expendable when the Grizzlies took Bibby with the second pick in the draft.

“It’s really unfortunate that the fans in Vancouver won’t get a chance to see the real Antonio Daniels,” Falk said. “I think he’ll really blossom in San Antonio. I think he would have blossomed here.”

Daniels has two years remaining on his original three-year rookie contract. He is due a little more than $2 million in each of the next two seasons. The Spurs can negotiate an extension for him next summer. Spurs notes: A source on the West Coast said the Spurs have backed off in their quest to trade for Golden State Warriors guard Latrell Sprewell.

Popovich declined comment on the report. He also dismissed rumors that he might be interested in New York guard John Starks, who reportedly may be the next player traded by the Knicks. -Daniels will arrive in San Antonio today and will address the media Saturday. Herrera reportedly is in Spain and hasn’t been reached for comment.

Dial said he guarded Daniels when Eastern Michigan played Bowling Green in the MAC two years ago.

“He checked me and I checked him,” Dial said. "Our teams split in the regular season. He got player of the year. Then we beat them in the MAC tournament. So it’s been back-and-forth between us.

“We’re pretty close. I kept in touch with him even after he went to Vancouver.”

Timing of potential lockout ‘bad luck’ for newest Spur

Newly acquired Spurs guard Antonio Daniels, the self-proclaimed “most excited player in the NBA,” arrived in San Antonio on Friday afternoon.

He came in with his mother to look over the city and get to know some of his teammates. But because of the impending lockout of players, he has been advised not to practice with others who started a weekend of workouts Friday night.

“I’m ready to get going,” Daniels said. “This lockout is a real case of bad luck because I’m ready to get down here and get established and really get in with everybody.”

Daniels became the Spurs’ backup point guard Wednesday night after a trade with Vancouver. In the exchange, the Spurs sent the Grizzlies veteran forward Carl Herrera and the rights to the 24th pick in the draft, St. John’s guard Felipe Lopez.

Spurs star forward Tim Duncan, who had been in Los Angeles filming a commercial, was on the connecting flight from Dallas to San Antonio with Daniels.

Duncan, apparently electing to bypass a group of media, was whisked out of the airport without commenting. Daniels was arriving from his home in Columbus, Ohio.

“Tim and I just talked about how cool everyone on the team is, and how close they are, how everyone gets along,” Daniels said. “I guess that’s part of being a winner.”

Daniels said he will have no problem giving up his role as a starter on a losing team and joining a winning team where he will serve as a backup to Avery Johnson.

“I don’t think that’s bad,” Daniels said. “This team is full of leadership. That’s something that I understand. Sometimes you have to wait your turn. If that’s what I’m called on to do, then that’s what I’m going to do.”

Daniels believes it will be good for him to have less responsibility and learn from the veterans.

“Coming here with all the leadership they have, I think it can’t do anything but help me,” said Daniels, who had been in Columbus for the last few days.

Daniels said Duncan called him five minutes after the trade was announced Wednesday night to welcome him to the team. The two became friends during pre- draft functions last summer.

“We really got close during that time,” Daniels said. “It was about three or four days, so we spent a lot of time together.”

Spurs coaches, meanwhile, began looking at a collection of players who are hoping to receive invitations to the fall training camp. Players in the workouts include second-round draft pick Derrick Dial out of Eastern Michigan and former NBA players Lawrence Moten and Anthony Tucker.

Several teams are conducting camps to look at players in anticipation of an NBA lockout that could be called as early as Wednesday.

“I’m going to try to make this work,” said Moten, who played two seasons with the Grizzlies before going overseas last year.

“Last year, I left the (country) early. I didn’t try out in any of the (NBA) camps. This time, I’m going to try to stick it out.”

Moten had already worked out for Philadelphia and New York. When the Spurs minicamp breaks Sunday, he will go to Indiana and possibly Charlotte.
