(Bill Evans)
(Craig Bell)
(Nikki Strassner)
(Donald B. McMurray)
(C.W. Weatherford)

FOCUS: The Spurs
Nice guys do finish first An open letter to Damon Stoudamire of the Portland Trail Blazers: By now you must be having second thoughts about your comments regarding Avery Johnson’s ability to lead the Spurs to an NBA championship.
While correct to some degree (A.J. “alone” won’t lead the
Spurs to the championship and no one person ever will),
you were evidently unaware that A.J., along with the rest
of the Spurs roster, possesses several attributes that you
and other key Blazers lack.
While the Trail Blazers have the makings of champions,
the team falls woefully short on some of the most critical
aspects of a true championship team. Attributes such as a
positive attitude, unselfishness, respect for opposing and
fellow team members, a genuine teamwork spirit and,
most of all, the ability to be humble are obviously things
you have yet to learn.
You may think these attributes are “wimpy”; that is exactly
why you and your teammates are off for the rest of the
summer and we’re on our way to winning the NBA
championship.
Nice guys finish last, you say? Not this year! - Bill Evans
City must keep team
No brain surgery here! The reason for the Spurs’ success
is simple: They are a great team. Now San Antonio has a
chance to form a team that will ensure San Antonio stays
the home of the Spurs.
I ask the leadership of this community - County Judge
Cyndi Krier and Mayor Howard Peak - to form a
blue-ribbon committee. You know the names: Gen.
Robert McDermott, Herb Kelleher, Edward Whitacre Jr.
and Gen. Robert T. Herres. Put them with council
members and county commissioners and let them iron out
a way to preserve the Spurs’ home in San Antonio.
The timing couldn’t be better. - Craig Bell
No joy for this visitor
While the entire city may be experiencing great joy with
the Spurs, I feel the need to express what happens to
some tourists who visit your city for reasons other than
basketball playoffs.
My family and I were in town to visit family.
Unfortunately, we parked in the 200 block of Addax, and
some of the locals decided that it was necessary to spray
graphic graffiti on our truck. Is this how San Antonio
treats tourists? - Russell Gilliam, Wichita Falls
Flag deserves support, too
I recently moved to San Antonio from Los Angeles and
am now a dedicated Spurs fan.
On May 29, I attended the playoff game at the
Alamodome between San Antonio and Portland. The
crowd was cheering, everyone was holding up "Go Spurs
Go" signs, showing their support. As soon as the players
were announced, the game began.
But … what happened to our respect for our country?
Where was the national anthem? As a matter of fact, there
was no flag or acknowledgment of our flag.
I sat there dumbfounded by this blatant disrespect and
realized that many people hadn’t even noticed.
Isn’t this the first sign of a falling nation, concerning
ourselves only with the “little things”? - Nikki Strassner
A supporter of free TV
This is in response to Parnell T. Broome’s June 1 letter,
“Spurs robbing fans with blackout.” His statement that
“fans should have the opportunity to view local games” is
misleading. Anyone can see the local games. My wife and
I (and 20,000 others) support the team by cheering for
them in person. Furthermore, most of the playoff games
have been on “free” TV, and all the remaining games will
be “free.”
I’m at a loss to understand exactly who “robbed” Mr.
Broome - and exactly what this “longtime Spurs fan”
was “robbed” of.
Maybe it would be closer to the truth for Mr. Broome to
refer to himself as a fan of "free TV professional
basketball." - Donald B. McMurray
Where would fans fit?
So the Spurs are winning and talk of an arena is coming
up once again. Well, I have an idea.
But, first, let’s look at the playoffs. During the playoffs
with the Los Angeles Lakers, there were 24,000 fans at
the first game, followed by 33,000 at the second game. I
do not recall the numbers for the Portland Trail Blazers,
but I know there were many.
Now they want a sports arena that will seat 18,000.
Hello! Simple math tells me as many as 15,000 fans will
not get to see a game.
I said I have an idea. Let the privileged 18,000 fans pay
for the new sports arena and leave the other 1 million-plus
people in the San Antonio area alone. - C.W. Weatherford
