面对J.R. 雷德(J.R.

A second helping - Duncan hits, Lakers miss in final ticks - Spurs up 2-0
The play wasn’t specifically called for Tim Duncan, but Mario Elie didn’t care. Down by one? Eighteen seconds left?
Elie knew where he wanted the ball.
“Tim,” Elie said. “I’m looking for you.”
Elie looked. Then followed through. He found Duncan. Duncan found light.
With J.R. Reid on his hip and the game in his right hand, Duncan turned and lofted a soft hook that settled into the net with 8.4 seconds left. When Derek Fisher let an inbounds pass bounce off his head, Sean Elliott hit a pair of free throws and Kobe Bryant missed a three-pointer, the Spurs had their 79-76 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers.
In front of a delirious Alamodome crowd of 33,293 fans, the Spurs capped another fourth-quarter comeback to take a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference semifinals. With the best-of-seven series now moving to Los Angeles, they can thank Duncan for helping them hold serve at home.
“He’s a prime-time player,” Elie said. “He made a prime-time play.”
According to Los Angeles coach Kurt Rambis, the Lakers made a prime-time blunder. After Bryant’s three-pointer gave the Lakers a 76- 75 lead, the Spurs called timeout with 18.1 seconds left.
With a foul to give, Rambis said the Lakers were instructed to hack away. When they didn’t, Glen Rice arrived too late to help Reid. Duncan, who scored a team-high 21 points, turned and fired the 9-footer.
“I didn’t know what to expect,” said Duncan, who missed a game- winner against Utah in last season’s Western Conference semifinals. “I just kept my eyes open.”
He liked what he saw. The Spurs had called a high pick and roll and Elie said he would look for Duncan. Blanketed with double-team coverage for most of the game, Duncan - who had made only three of his last 11 shots since the first quarter - found enough room to work against the smaller Reid.
“Tim Duncan likes to take the last shot,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "David Robinson likes to take the last shot. But with the matchups, we went to Tim.
“Tim’s not going to be flustered. He just competes and goes home.”
The Lakers are headed home, too. Needing to dig themselves out of a 2-0 hole.
“We had it and we fell again,” said Shaquille O’Neal, who was held to 16 points. “We beat ourselves. We made too many mistakes down the stretch.”
After Duncan’s shot, Los Angeles called timeout, but the inbounds pass clanged off Fisher’s head. Elie corralled the loose ball and Elliott sank a pair of free throws with 5.3 seconds left. After a horrendous night at the line in Game 1, the Spurs made all but one of their 18 attempts Wednesday.
“They were pretty big,” Elliott said of his free throws. “But it was just a free throw. It’s uncontested. It’s not that hard of a shot.”
The Lakers had one last chance to send the game into overtime, but Bryant missed a running three- pointer at the buzzer.
Bryant, however, had a heavy hand in the final frantic minute. With the shot-clock buzzer just about to sound, he canned a three- pointer in the right corner for a 76- 75 lead with 34.3 seconds left. Elliott tried to answer with an open three of his own, but threw up an air ball.
“When Sean missed that, I told him, ‘Man, that was your shot! What are you doing?’” Robinson said. “That’s OK. He made his free throws.”
Bryant, however, didn’t. He missed a pair with 18.9 seconds left that would have stretched the Lakers’ lead to three.
“I was surprised,” Bryant said. “Some strange stuff happens sometimes. I missed them because my release was terrible. It was odd.”
The game was strange. With the three big men held in check, it looked like either Elliott or Bryant would decide things.
“What did Bryant have?” Popovich asked. “Sixty-five.”
Only 28. Elliott, however, had his best game of the playoffs with 19 points. He and Elie also took turns guarding Bryant.
The Spurs’ defense again won out. Which was fortunate for them, considering their offense went in the tank for a good stretch. After racing to a 10-point lead at the end of the first quarter, they made only 19 of their last 47 shots (40.4 percent).
“We were stagnant there for a while,” Robinson said. “We stopped moving the ball. We kept trying to stuff the ball inside to Tim. But down the stretch we made the key plays.”
Robinson included. O’Neal briefly tied the game when he jammed home Rick Fox’s miss, but Robinson blew by the Lakers center for a dunk to give the Spurs a 75-73 lead with 1:00 left.
Robinson finished with 16 points while Malik Rose, who kept the Spurs afloat in the second quarter, added 13.
“Neither team outdid the other,” Popovich said. “We just kept trading blows. We happened to make a shot. They didn’t.”
