Spurs draw bead on Wolves - Johnson urges team to stay focused as it tries to finish off - Minnesota
Avery Johnson laid out ground rules for the Spurs early Friday morning: No laughing or giggling during video session.
Save the high-fives, forearm bashes or other celebratory forms of athletic behavior for the game.
No daydreaming about championship rings, NBA titles or downtown parades.
Little Mr. Happy also admonished reporters.
“Don’t go writing stories about how David had a good game,” Johnson said. “We still haven’t seen the real David Robinson yet.”
The Spurs’ prescription for success apparently involves a heavy dose of surliness. So don’t expect too many smiling faces unless they close out Minnesota in Game 4 of their first-round, best-of-five playoff series this afternoon at the Target Center.
“And people say I’m the grinch?” Mario Elie asked. “Avery is just as bad.”
Johnson is the Jack Lemmon to Elie’s Walter Matthau. A pair of grumpy old men, swigging prune juice and yapping at their younger teammates. Less than 30 minutes after the Spurs beat the Timberwolves on Thursday night to take a 2-1 lead in the Western Conference series, Johnson was chiding everyone not to lose their edge.
“I don’t have time to baby-sit 12 or 14 people,” Johnson said. “But it starts with me. If guys see I’m focused and guys see Mario Elie focused and guys see David Robinson focused, it’s going to carry over to the game.”
The goal now for the Spurs is to carry over Thursday’s performance to today’s 2 p.m. tipoff. In Game 3, they did a good job of limiting Minnesota to only one shot per possession for the final three quarters. They also defended the pick-and-roll between Kevin Garnett and Terrell Brandon better. And whenever the Timberwolves looked to run, Elie or Jerome Kersey usually matched them step for step.
Minnesota made 11 of 42 shots (26.2 percent) in the first half and scored just 28 points, the fifth-lowest total for a half in NBA playoff history. Dean Garrett (3 of 4) and Radoslav Nesterovic (1 of 2) were the only Wolves to make at least half their shots.
“Our emphasis was to try to push the ball up the floor and get some easy baskets,” Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "You’d think it was the reverse and that we were trying to walk it up the floor and get a half-court game.
“We wanted to get some easy hoops and get the crowd into the game. You can’t keep on playing against their big people and go against the half court.”
The Spurs only put a few wrinkles in their offensive plan. When Tim Duncan posted up, Elie tried to keep the Wolves off-balance. Sometimes he would drift into the corner. Other times he played a pick-and-roll with Duncan. Duncan and Robinson also got the ball deeper in the post, giving the Spurs better spacing.
And after trapping Johnson in Game 2, Minnesota continually left him alone to practice his jumper. After he made 12 of 15 shots, it’s a safe bet they won’t do it again today.
“… Like I keep telling y’all year after year,” Johnson said, "if you’re out there with Sean Elliott and Mario Elie, and you’ve got two great post people like Tim Duncan and David Robinson, if I was the coach, I’d leave me (open), too.
“That’s simple - play the percentages. That’s not an insult. That’s just playing the percentages.”
The odds were in the Spurs’ favor also thanks to the re-emergence of Robinson. Johnson, however, didn’t seem too impressed with Robinson’s 17 points and 18 rebounds. Part of the focus of Friday’s practice, Johnson said, was to find ways to get the Spurs center even more involved.
“I remember when David would have 18 rebounds, (and former coach) John Lucas would tell him he should have had 25,” Johnson said. “When you have 14 points in the first half, you should have had 18. So, yeah, there are a lot of ways for us to improve.”
Stay mad, however, continues to be the motto. So kill those “Run for the Ring” promos, Johnson said. Forget all that overzealous hype about a sweep. And, above all else, please don’t say anything nice about Robinson.
