Notes
Upon further review: The Spurs watched film for about 45 minutes Tuesday before going through a light workout.
“We got a chance to see some of the things we didn’t do well,” David Robinson said. "Early in the game we gave up way too many open jump shots. I thought we defended better the last half of the game, but we need to come out stronger early.
“One pump fake and a step through and they had a wide-open shot.”
Minnesota shot 45.8 percent (33 of 72) Sunday, the best it’s shot in five games against the Spurs this season. In three of the regular-season meetings, the Spurs held the Timberwolves below 40 percent.
Minnesota only took 12 shots in the third quarter Sunday, then made only 6 of 16 attempts (37.5 percent) in the final quarter.
- Banged up: Sean Elliott has worn a sleeve over his right elbow the past few days after getting hit in the arm in the final regular-season game against Golden State.
“It hurts a little bit to extend it, but the sleeve keeps it warm,” Elliott said. “It’s OK.”
Elliott originally hurt the arm earlier in the season.
- Dead aim: Elliott and Avery Johnson combined to make 40 straight free throws during Tuesday’s practice.
That’s no easy feat considering the Spurs finished the regular season ranked 24th in free-throw shooting (69.8 percent). Three of the team’s starters - Tim Duncan (69.0 percent), David Robinson (65.8 percent) and Johnson (56.8 percent) - shot below 70 percent.
“It cost us some games earlier in the season,” Elliott said. "We were atrocious.
“But lately we’ve been shooting pretty well.”
After making only 32 of 60 free throws (53.3 percent) in back-to-back games against the Los Angeles Clippers and Sacramento two weeks ago, the Spurs shot 79.4 percent (131 of 165) from the line in their last five games of the regular season. They made 17 of 22 attempts (77.3 percent) Sunday.
- Future teammates: After watching Sunday’s battle between Duncan and Kevin Garnett, Mario Elie believes the United State’s hopes for a gold medal in the 2000 Olympics are in good hands.
Duncan and Garnett are two of nine NBA players already chosen to play on the U.S. national team. The United States will play in an Olympic qualifying tournament in July at San Juan, Puerto Rico.
“I just wish I could be there to watch them practice against each other,” Elie said.
- Standing tall: Garnett isn’t backing down from his comments that the Timberwolves would “shock the world” by winning their first- round playoff series.
He noted that the Wolves are only down 1-0 to the Spurs in the best-of- five series. “I definitely believe we got a lot of determination in here,” Garnett said.
- Road woes: The Timberwolves have lost 11 in a row on the road, including 10 straight to close out the regular season. If Minnesota wins tonight, it would be the team’s first road victory since March 24.
- Lone star: Timberwolves rookie forward Andrae Patterson is a former high school star in Texas out of Abilene Cooper. Last summer, the Wolves picked Patterson in the second round (46th overall) out of Indiana University. He was scoreless in five minutes of his first NBA playoff game Sunday. - Johnny Ludden, Jerry Briggs
