Spurs seeking Finals step Playoff wins elusive for S.A. team
The Spurs gear up today for another exciting and dangerous trek through the NBA playoffs.
A ferocious late-season tear gave the Spurs the best record in the league this season and a first- round date with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Tipoff is at 2 p.m. at the Alamodome.
San Antonians, as pumped up as ever with playoff fever, have been down this road umpteen times before. The Spurs have qualified for the postseason 22 times since the franchise arrived here for the 1973- 74 campaign - a phenomenal mark of consistency.
That’s the good news.
The Spurs have made it to the conference finals four times, but have yet to experience the glory of showing up on prime-time TV in the big show, the NBA Finals.
That’s the bad news.
Thus, San Antonio begins its annual ritual to exorcise the ghosts of failed playoffs of the past. Here are some of the near-misses and dashed dreams that plague the Spurs’ title-starved faithful…
1976: Original Spurs fans remember the season. The team finished third in the now-defunct American Basketball Association with 50 wins, earned a first-round bye and landed in the semifinals for the third straight year.
Then, All-Star guard James Silas broke his foot in the first game against the New York Nets. George Gervin scored 30 points, but the Spurs still lost the opener.
The Spurs had Game 4 in hand and were looking at a 3-1 series advantage when Gervin rebounded a missed shot.
Playing with a fractured wrist, Gervin held the ball over his head and Julius Erving, standing out of bounds, snatched it. New York scored and the Nets persevered.
The end result was a 4-3 series loss and the ouster of Coach Bob Bass, who became full-time general manager of the team.
1979: The Spurs won their first seven-game series by knocking off Philadelphia, 4-3, to make their first conference finals appearance as a member of the NBA.
The Spurs bolted to a 3-1 advantage over Washington. The optimism that an NBA Finals berth was in hand was tempered by San Antonio Express-News columnist Dan Cook’s now-famous utterance: “It ain’t over till the fat lady sings.”
Washington coach Dick Motta enjoyed the final aria, guiding his team to three consecutive wins. The Spurs had a nine-point lead with seven minutes left in Game 7, but Washington tied it.
Billy Paultz was called for a moving pick and Bobby Dandridge hit a 16-footer with eight seconds left to secure the victory for the Bullets.
1982 and 1983: The Spurs went to the Western Conference finals in both years, and they were ousted both times by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Spurs, who were swept 4-0 in 1982, put up a stronger fight with Artis Gilmore as their center in '83. The end came in Game 6 when Magic Johnson protected a 101-100 L.A. win by blocking a Mike Mitchell jumper in the lane.
1990: The Spurs were in the thick of the playoff wars in David Robinson’s first season.
The Admiral, along with fellow rookie Sean Elliott and newcomer Terry Cummings, propelled the Spurs to a 3-0 sweep of Denver in the first round.
Then came Portland and a hard- fought series that went the distance. The Spurs had a seven-point lead late in Game 7, but several botched opportunities allowed Portland to tie the game and send it to overtime.
That’s when Rod Strickland threw the infamous no-look pass that wound up in Blazer hands, resulting in a breakaway foul on Strickland and a Portland victory.
1991: The Spurs, still feeling their ginger after the Portland showing, were Midwest Division champs and heavily favored to overpower Golden State in the first round.
The Spurs won the opener in astonishing fashion. The San Antonio backcourt duo of Rod Strickland and Willie Anderson, tired of hearing about star Warriors guards Mitch Richmond and Tim Hardaway, combined for 68 points in a 130-121 scoring fiesta.
Golden State coach Don Nelson was ecstatic when he read the next-day accounts. He took full advantage of the despondent guards, plotted his defenses against an inside game and raced to three consecutive wins.
1993: Coach John Lucas had San Antonio happy and Robinson was the talk of the league with his point-center play. The Spurs got back at the Blazers, whipping them in the opening round.
Whippet-quick Kevin Johnson and the Phoenix Suns applied too much heat in the second round, though.
Robinson suffered barbs in Game 6 in San Antonio when he muffed his shot in the final seconds. Charles Barkley hit his, the final basket in HemisFair Arena, to send Phoenix onward and upward to the NBA Finals.
1994: Dennis Rodman was in full rebellious regalia.
Rodman shunned team meetings, practices and bus rides. He limoed over to Salt Lake City’s Delta Center in the company of Madonna. The flamboyant pair tossed more fuel onto the already- inflamed Jazz crowds.
Utah won Game 2 in the Alamodome when the Spurs went more than 16 minutes without a field goal. The Jazz did it again in Game 3, romping to a 105-72 victory, aided by the absence of Rodman, who had been suspended for kneeing John Stockton in the thigh.
The Jazz closed out the best-of- five series in Game 4. The resulting uproar led to the departure of Bass and Lucas, and the hiring of Gregg Popovich and Bob Hill.
1995: Hill and his crew topped the NBA with 62 regular-season victories and marched into the playoffs with a title on their minds. The quixotic Avery Johnson proclaimed: “We’re going to go 15-3.” The Spurs swept Denver and outlasted the Lakers, winning twice in overtime.
Rodman still was marching to his own drummer and the Spurs still were missing outside shots when they took on Houston in the Western Conference finals.
The hoopla was exuberant in the Alamodome until Robinson, the regular-season MVP, woke up to a nightmare - Hakeem “The Dream” Olajuwon. As a result, the Rockets won three games in San Antonio and the Game 6 clincher in Houston on their way to another NBA title.
“That one hurts most of all,” Elliott said. “We thought we could win it all. They seemed to have a different star every night.”
1996: The Spurs again busted through the season and won the Midwest Division with 59 victories. They polished off the Suns in four games.
The Spurs then got their ears boxed by Utah, bowing out in six games. Jazz coach Jerry Sloan, never one to disparage a defeated foe, admitted he hadn’t expected it to be so easy after a 108-81 series- clinching victory in Game 6.
Robinson first lashed out at referee Steve Javie, then apologized to his teammates for his performance.
Popovich was distressed at the lack of toughness and indicated the coaching staff should have seen the train coming long before the wreck. He fired Hill early the next season.
1998: Popovich floored a mentally tougher and more physical unit. The Spurs took out Phoenix in four games, featuring rambunctious and determined play by Johnson.
Alas, the next trip was to Utah, where the Spurs missed potential winning shots at the end of Games 1 and 2.
Back home, San Antonio romped in Game 3 and hopes soared. But Malone silenced the Alamodome with a 34-point explosion in Game 4.
With Rookie of the Year Tim Duncan operating on a twisted ankle suffered late in Game 2, the Spurs were sent packing with a Game 5 loss at the Delta Center.
Like so many other times in their history, the Silver and Black were left pondering the odd twists, turns and bounces of balls that, in the end, have yet to go their way.
